  • The aim of the study was to identify the effects of two different diets (sand eels or saurels) on the serum protein electrophoretic patterns of Oriental White Storks held in captivity. The tests were performed on two groups of storks according to the diet (group 1 and 2). Twenty-two (group 1) or twenty-nine (group 2) storks were included. The values of complete blood count (CBC), serum biochemistry profiles, protein fractions (albumin, ${\alpha}$-globulin, ${\beta}$-globulin, and ${\gamma}$-globulin), and lipoprotein (high density- [HDL] and low density lipoprotein [LDL]) were compared between samples obtained during two groups (p < 0.05). The ${\alpha}$-globulin fraction was decreased and the ${\beta}$-globulin fraction was significantly increased in samples obtained from group 1 compared to those obtained from group 2. In group 1, the concentration of LDL was also significantly increased compared to that of group 2. In conclusion, we confirmed that the ${\beta}$-globulin fraction was significantly elevated in storks fed sand eels.

  • Ninety-six isolates of Edwardsiella tarda recovered from outbreaks of Edwardsiellosis in cultured eels(Anguilla japonica) in Kunsan, were examined for drug susceptibility, distribution and transferabilities of R plasmid. All of the E. tarda isolates examined were sensitive to gentamicin(GM), streptomycin(SM), norfloxacin(NF), and amikacin(AK). But most isolates were resistant to sulfadimethoxine(SD, 86 strains), ampicillin(AM, 84 strains), penicillin G(PM, 80 strains), nalidixic acid (NA, 67 strains), oxytetracycline(OT, 44 strains), and oxolinic acid(OA, 37 strains). Twenty different combinations of drug resistance patterns were observed : the frequently encountered pattern was SD-AM-PM-NA-OA(16 strains), SD-AM-PM-NA(14 strains), SD-AM-PM-NA-OT-OA(12 strains), SD-AM-PM-OT(10 strains), and SD-AM-PM-NA-OT(8 strains). Transferable R plasmids were found out to be carried in 78 out of 94 resistant strains, indicating that these isolates carry conjugally transferable R plasmids associated with single or multiple drugs. The frequently observed transferarble R plasmids were AM(8 strains), AM-PM-NA(8 strains), Am-SD(6 strains), PM(6 strains), and SD(6 strains) These results suggest that high dose of various antibacterials might have already been introduced to eel culture system leading to the acquirement of multi-drug resistance to wide range of antibacterials.

  • Recently, import supply of glass eels from Philippines has been increased in South Korea, and the species distinction was very important to import traders and Anguilla marmorata and A. bicolor pacifica are major species at Philippines. In this study, the species distinction and the rate were researched targeting imported glass eels from the estuaries of North Luzon and the South Mindanao in May and July, 2014. Dorsal fin position and pigmentation pattern at caudal fin are the trait standard for species distinction. The results about morphological identification were coincide with the result of the genetic identification, and the regional distribution of A. marmorata rate was over 90% at North Ruzon in May. However, the rates of A. bicolor pacifica and A. mamorata were 63.3% and 36.7% in May, and were 53.3% and 46.7% in July respectively at South Mindanao.

  • Most of the downstream of the river is blocked by beams, so fishways are required for the movement of conciliatory fish species and connection with the upstream. Therefore, it is very important as an ecological pier that can help free movement of fish. The three previously installed eel ladders use only brushes on the bottom. For find out the effect of the bottom material except to brush, experimented used model glass eel ladders to the ascent of glass eel. The eel ladder model was 1.2 m length, 0.3 m wide, and 0.1 m high, and three gravels of different particles were attached to the bottom of the fish ladder setting on the Geumgang Estuary Bank. The first model ladder was made of gravel with particles of 5 mm, and the second model ladder was made of gravel with particles of 2 mm. The third model ladder was made by solidifying with particles of 1 mm or less cement. All experiments were repeated 5 times for 1 hour. As a result of the experiment, the lower the angle, and the smaller the gravel particles, the more glass eels are ascended to the ladder, but the made of cement was nearly not ascent. The gravel-bottom model ladder has a lower discharge and flow rate than the brush ladder so more glass eels can ascent ladder, and if the glass eel ladder is improved through experiments applying various floor materials and variables in the future, more glass eels are going to ascent glass eel ladder.

  • This study performed a trichlorfon (TCF) residue and pharmacokinetic analysis with Japanese eels, Anguilla japonica, to obtain baseline data to establish the maximum residue level (MRL) of TCF in A. japonica. After dipping A. japonica in 30 ppm and 150 ppm of TCF at 28℃ and 18℃, drug residue in the body was analyzed with LC-MS/MS, and these results were further analyzed with the PK solver program to obtain the pharmacokinetic parameters of TCF in the serum, muscles, and liver. The maximum concentrations (Cmax) in the serum, muscles, and liver were 25.87-357.42, 129.91-1043.73, and 40.47-375.20, respectively, and the time to maximum concentration (Tmax) was 0.13-1.32h, 1.17-3.34h, and 0.14-5.40h, respectively. The terminal elimination half-life (T1/2) was 2.13-3.92h, 5.30-10.35h, and 0.65-13.81h, respectively. In the 30 mg/L concentration group, TCF was not detected in the serum of eels 96 hours after bathing, and was below the detection limit after 336 hours in muscle and liver. On the other hand, in the 150 mg/L concentration group, TCF was not detected in the serum of eels 336 hours after bathing, but was detected in muscle and liver at 336 hours. In conclusion, the results of this study would be useful in establishing the MRL of TCF in farmed A. japonica.

  • The sampling was made by a kind of trap nets and an electric fishing apparatus in the lagoons of Arcachon Bay. Length frequency distributions obtained by two gears are combined to propose more reliable length composition of the population. The biomass was estimated by the capture and recapture method in a limited area with electric fishing apparatus, and it was redressed based on the corrected length composition. It showed approximately 638kg/ha in the deeper parts of the lagoons. It suggests that the lagoons of Arcachon Bay contain relatively high density of eels.

  • A radio-frequency (RF) Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) torch system was used for boron-nitride nano-tube (BNNT) synthesis. Because of electrodeless plasma generation, no electrode pollution and effective heating transfer during nano-material synthesis can be realized. For stable plasma generation, argon and nitrogen gases were injected with 60 kW grid power in the difference pressure from 200 Torr to 630 Torr. Varying hydrogen gas flow rate from 0 to 20 slpm, the electrical and optical plasma properties were investigated. Through the spectroscopic analysis of atomic argon line, hydrogen line and nitrogen molecular band, we investigated the plasma electron excitation temperature, gas temperature and electron density. Based on the plasma characterization, we performed the synthesis of BNNT by inserting 0.5~1 um hexagonal-boron nitride (h-BN) powder into the plasma. We analysis the structure characterization of BNNT by SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) and TEM (Transmission Electron Microscopy), also grasp the ingredient of BNNT by EELS (Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy) and Raman spectroscopy. We treated bundles of BNNT with the atmospheric pressure plasma, so that we grow the surface morphology in the water attachment of BNNT. We reduce the advancing contact angle to purity bundles of BNNT.

  • Histopathological changes in gills by potassium permanganate were investigated in four fish species. flounder(Pararychthys olivaceus) and rockfish(Sebastes schlegeli) in marine fish, and carp(Cyprinus carpio) and eel(Anguilla japonica) in freshwater fish. Marine fishies were more sensitive to $KMnO_4$ than freshwater fishies and have shown histological changes even in low concentration of 1ppm. Eels were less affected than carp in high concentration of $KMnO_4$. Especially in eels, hyperplasia and hypertropy of mucus cells were observed. Compared to in underground water. the effect of KMnO₄ were reduced very much in pond water. That this differences were due to the concentration of organic substances were certained by experiment with various feed concentrations. The potency of $KMnO_4$ were influenced by dissolved oxygen.

  • We have analyzed the atomic structure of O/Fe(100) and interface atomic structure of MgO deposited on Fe(100) surface using LEED I/V curve analysis. As the O adsorption on the Fe(100) surface, the first substrate interlayer distance is expanded by up to 16%. For 1ML MgO deposited on Fe(100) surface, the oxygen ions of MgO are located on-top of the Fe atoms, the interlayer distance at the MgO/Fe interface are expanded. From the AIA(average intensity mixing approximation) calculation, we find the interface structure of monolayer MgO on Fe(100) system has the two interface structure with MgO/FeO/Fe(100) and MgO/Fe(100). This supports the results of EELS experiment that shown existence of stretched FeO layer and coexistance of MgO/FeO/Fe(100) and MgO/Fe(100) structure.
