  • This study aims to describe actual condition of residents' involvement of Sk$\"{a}$rk$\"{a}$ll ecovillage in Sweden by in-depth interviews with five residents. This study, hopefully, could contribute to offer useful information for forming ecovillage, as well as awakening about ecovillage movement to the public in Korea. The interviews were fulfilled during spring of 2010 in G$\"{o}$teborg and Sk$\"{a}$rk$\"{a}$ll ecovillage in Sweden. The results are as follows: 1) In terms of overall residents' involvement by self-evaluation everybody agrees with that residents' involvement was quite excellent during forming stage of the village, while it has been notably decreased now in running stage. It reveals there is a gap between ideology and reality. 2) Concerning decision making method, they use majority decision instead of consensus, since only 9 households of 20 are residing there all year around, it is hardly possible to assemble all the residents in the meeting. In Accordance with problematic conflicts in the village recently, development of socialization with others and education of communication skill for residents probably could be helpful to resolve conflicts among residents in long term. 3) In terms of evaluation of ecovillage movement in Sk$\"{a}$rk$\"{a}$ll ecovillage, it is the fact that many residents live less self-sufficiently, more energy consumed than the ideology pursuits. Also, they live with close connections with conventional society. Nevertheless, the efforts they are willing to practice 3R principles (Recycle, Reuse, Reduction) have to be highly respected, if we consider its educational influence to environmental movement for the conventional society.

  • Resident participation or tenant empowerment is becoming an important concept of planning, provision of welfare services, and management of housing. It can be motivated by three variables: shared goals, shared values, and sense of community among residents. Theoretically, the more each of these three variables, the more likely people will be to participate. The purpose of this study was to identify the perception of management staff on residents' participation in public rental housing. For this, 198 management staff of public rental housing under Korea Housing Management were surveyed using questionnaire distributed by email during February 18 to 27, 2009. Only 33.3% of the public rental housing complexes surveyed constituted Residents Representative Committee. Most of the respondents showed negative perception of resident organizations and their roles as an meaningful way to communicate with them on the management system. Several ways to enhance the resident participation and to reduce housing and living cost burden of residents in public rental housing were suggested as follows: development and distribution of education and service program inspiring the residents' empowerment, enacting a provision of Tenants Representative obligation in Rental Housing Act, and so on.

  • The Korean government has promoted rural development projects aimed at bridging the gap between cities and rural areas. However, prior research in assessing available rural projects was mainly focused on only part of the agricultural area, evaluation of project types and improvement measures, analysis of operating management policies, and measuring levels of importance by sub-project categories, and yet the study found a little study on residents' satisfaction of the project who is the direct and fundamental beneficiary. In particular, comparative studies on rural and fishing village residents were insufficient. Thus, the present study chose village residents from Chodo-ri where the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries held the Customized Capacity Empowerment Project from the Gangwon Fishing Village Specialized Support Center and Songgye-ri where was the project area for rural revitalization project to navigate changes on both perception and satisfaction of the village residents before and after the education.

  • The purpose of this paper was to examine the management of Environmentally Friendly Planning Features(EFPF) in condominium with Green Building Certification(GBC). A questionnaire survey was conducted among management office staff and residents on six housing estates in Seoul. The data from 200 respondents were analysed using descriptive statistics and t-tests. The main findings were as followings : 1) Most of the staffs considered that garbage collection and recycling, and green spaces were well-managed. 2) The residents indicated that garbage collection and recycling, and green spaces were properly handled, but they failed to recognize these as EFPF. 3) Residency duration was unrelated to the residents' perceptions of the EFPF and their management. In conclusion, neither the residents nor the staff were aware of the GBC system or that their housing estates were built using EFPF. To remedy this, it can be assumed the residents' lack of appreciation of the EFPF can be resolved if they participate in the management of these features. So the residents will need education, and the management staff will require professional training.

Methods: Eighty residents consented and were divided into three groups; 33 residents(drinking well water and still living there), 23 residents(drinking well water but do not live there any more), and 24 residents(did not drink well water but live there now: control group). Data were collected from August to September, 2010 from the survey questionnaires, general health examination, specific functional test, and biological marker tests. Results: Current residents showed higher levels of body mass index, blood pressure, and fasting blood glucose that are related to adult diseases. 64 participants received specific test for cancer. Only one person had esophageal cancer. Perchloroethylene was not found in the Urine Samples. Current residents showed a higher level of 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine, an indicator of oxidative damage, and there was a statistically significant difference after correcting the confounding variables. Conclusion: We need education programs for managing the risk factors that are related to adult diseases in people who are now living in this village. We also need to expand further studies for investigating oxidative damage indicators.

  • The primary purpose of this study is to suggest policy directions for redevelopment project based on analysis of residents' perception on needs and reasons of redevelopment, and development type in old settlements in Daegu Metropolitan City. The main findings are follows. First, the study area is short of public space such as road and parks, occupied by old single detached houses with small parcel. The living environment of the area consist with many 20 years or older two story houses is very poor. Second, most of residents (58.5%) consider economic factors or cheaper rent more serious than other factors such as convenience, amenity, and education facilities. Third, residents want new housing construction even though explanatory power of trash collection, bad smells, privacy is very high in residents' satisfaction. Fourth, most of residents (88.8%) agree redevelopment and show strong preference to high-density apartment construction through demolish-and-development type of redevelopment approach. They are willing to agree the parcellevel redevelopment if governments provides economic supports and temporary settlements. This finding suggests very important policy implications for current government efforts to improve living environment.

  • It has been determined that two-way evacuation routes that connect houses to evacuation sites should be developed to protect residents of historic preservation areas from future disasters. These routes are required because traditional buildings and other historic spatial elements are located close to each other. It is important to understand residents' perceptions of evacuation routes that connect their houses to temporary safe places to develop evacuation system strategies that include effective two-way evacuation routes. This paper describes a procedure used to construct a two-way evacuation route database designed to preserve two study areas that was based on an interview survey conducted with area residents. The resulting database contained residents' perceptions of evacuation routes. The database contains categorized spatial problems related to these routes that can be used for future research.

  • In Korea, a movement for founding a intentional community village is becoming popular to improve the individualistic living environment, and to create a humanistic lifestyle. However, it is difficult to say whether its management is successful or not because the intentional community village such as an eco-village is still in an experimental stage in Korea. In this study, a intentional community village was proposed as an alternative approach to help residents build an effective cooperation system and to encourage them to participate in various communal activities. Detailed cases were studied including a formation process and methods of residents' participation. Through the case study, actual conditions of the community villages and several problems were studied. The conclusion of this study is as follows; In order to sustain the community village, it is crucial to encourage the community spirit among the residents. We also find that developing various community facilities and programs can easily raise a sense of familial warmth among the residents. Above all, proactive participation in the communal activities is the most important. It is also necessary to consider the architectural design which can be used as a guiding principle for foundation of the intentional community village. In addition, concrete and systematic solutions including communal activity programs, residents education, and self management regulations must be discussed.

  • This study was conducted (i) to recommend the high-scored education method as a adaptable method, and (ii) to find the most influential factor among the three acceptability components (feasibility factor, stimulation factor and reliability factor) to urban or rural residents. The accept-ability score of each health education method currently existing in urban and rural area was estimated. A total of 257 households in Guro 6-dong, Seoul, and 233 households in Jeomdong-myeon, Yeoju-gun, were sampled by interview survey using questionnaire. The four types of health education methods used in this study are; printed matter method, mailing service method. personal contact method, and group contact method. The major findings obtained from this research are as follows; 1) In urban area, the highest-scored in terms of acceptability is the personal contact method, followed by the mailing service, the printed matter, and the group contact. The mailing service method is found to be effective especially for the intelligent group people. 2) In rural area, the highest-scored in terms of acceptability is also the personal contact method, followed by the group contact, and printed matter method. In general, the group contact method is effective toward both urban-poor and rural housewives (especially in stimulation factor). To improve the health consciousness of the residents, there arises the need for the existing education program into better organized and diversified one and for educating health-educators by providing in-depth health knowledge.
