  • Currently, the Korean nuclear industry uses ZIRLO as material for nuclear fuel cladding(zirconium alloy). KEPCO Nuclear Fuel is in the process of developing a HANA alloy to enable domestic production of cladding. Cladding manufacture involves multistage heat treatments and pickling processes, the latter of which is vital for the removal of defects and impurities on the cladding surface. SMUT that forms on the cladding surface during such pickling process is a source of surface defects during heat treatment and post-treatment processes if not removed. This study analyzes ZIRLO, HANA-4, and HANA-6 alloy claddings to extensively study the SEM/EDS, XRD, and particle size characteristics of SMUT, which are second phase particles that are formed on the cladding surface during pickling processes. Using the analysis results, this study observes SMUT formation characteristics according to Nb concentration in Zr alloys during the washing process following the pickling process. In addition, this study observes SMUT removal characteristics on cladding surfaces according to concentrations of nitric acid and hydrofluoric acid in the acid solution.

  • Hematite iron oxide (${\alpha}$-$Fe_2O_3$) nanowalls were fabricated on aluminum substrate by a facile solvent-assisted hydrothermal oxidation process. The XRD and EDS patterns indicate that the sample has a rhombohedral phase of hematite $Fe_2O_3$. FE-SEM, TEM, HR-TEM, SA-ED were employed to characterize the resulting materials. $N_2$ adsorption-desorption isotherms was used to study a BET surface area. Their capability of catalytic degradation of titan yellow GR azo dye with air oxygen in aqueous solution over $Fe_2O_3$ catalysts was studied. The result indicates that the as-prepared product has a high catalytic activity, because it has a larger surface area. Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms of adsorption dye on the catalysts surface were investigated and the decomposition of titan yellow GR follows pseudo-first order kinetic.

  • Titanium has been used in various fields due to its good corrosion and erosion resistance, and superior mechanical properties. The process for selective electro-deposition on a titanium surface using laser beam is proposed in this paper. The process consists of laser irradiation, electro-deposition, and ultrasonic cleaning. Laser irradiation can change the surface morphology of titanium. Through laser irradiation, the surface cleaning effect and a rough surface can be achieved. The surface roughness of titanium was measured according to the laser beam conditions. The characteristics of selective electro-deposition on titanium surface according to surface roughness are investigated by various analytical methods such as SEM, and EDS.

  • The number of parts made of ceramic materials has gradually been increasing in field of from mechanical engineering to electronics engineering and, mechanical engineering ceramics have spread because of three very favourable characteristic features of their application, namely, heat, wear, and corrosion resistance. therefore, the elaboration of suitable grinding technologies is Important. grinding is problematic because crack-free ceramics are difficult to process owing to their particular micro structure. In this paper we report on the application of advanced precision grinding process, elaborating continuous wheel dressing. The removal rate can be increased significantly and surface roughness is improved. Various problems(roughness, ground surface etc)encountered in grinding of ceramics are also discussed.

  • Many researches on fabrication process for BSCCO precursor powders have been developed for high J$_{c}$ BSCCO-2223 tape. Spray pyrolysis method for fabrication of precursor powder has many advantages, such as high purity, fine particle size and low carbon content of BSCCO precursor powder. Fine, spherical powders were prepared by ultrasonic spray pyrolysis from the aqueous solution of metal nitrates. BSCCO precursor powders were synthesized with various solutes concentration and heat treatment conditions. Average particle size for spray pyrolysis powders was $1.5∼3\mu\textrm{m}$. Bi-2223/Ag tape was prepared by PIT method and followed by various sintering conditions. BSCCO precursor powders were characterized by XRD, SEM, EDS, Carbon content and particle size analysis.s.

  • Magnetic separation of Fe contaminated Al-Si cutting chip scraps was performed for the recyclability assessment. It was also aimed to investigate the casting and solidification characteristics of the cutting chip scraps. The magnetically separated cutting chip scraps were adequately treated for the casting procedure and test specimens were made into a stepped mold inducing different cooling rates. The test specimens were evaluated by the combined analysis of ICP, Spectroscopy, OM-image analyzer, SEM/EDS, etc. Solidification characteristics of cutting chip scraps were examined as functions of Fe content and cooling rate. It is concluded that the magnetic separation process can be utilized to recycle the Fe contaminated Al-Si cutting chip scraps in the high cooling rate foundry process.

  • Adsorption of Congo Red (CR) from dye-containing effluents using modified bentonite (MB) has been investigated here. Isothermal studies were conducted to ascertain maximum adsorption capacity of the adsorbent. MB exhibited superior adsorption capacity compared to other low-cost adsorbents. Experimental data fitted the Langmuir isotherm better, indicating monolayer coverage of CR on MB. The feasibility of the process was measured in terms of separation factor $R_L$. The values of Gibbs free energy, entropy and enthalpy were calculated from the thermodynamics of the process. Adsorption was feasible and spontaneous, being endothermic. Analytical techniques including SEM, EDS, FTIR and XRD were applied to characterize MB and also to provide conclusive proof of the accumulation of CR on to MB.

  • One of the most important is to insure that a new circuit design is qualified far release before it is scheduled for manufacturing, test, assembly and delivery. Due to various causes, there happens to be a low yield in the wafer process. Wafer test is a critical process in analyzing the chip characteristics in the EDS(electric die sorting) using analytic tools -wafer map, wafer summary and datalog. In this paper, we propose new analytic map algorithms for DDI chip test data. Using the proposed analytic map algorithms, we expect to improve the yield, quality and analysis time.

  • This article aims at investigating the effect of applied load and sliding speed on wear behavior of thermally spraryed STS316 coating. STS316 coatings were fabricated by flame spray process according to optimal parameters on steel substrates. Dry sliding wear tests were performed on STS316 coating using four different applied load as 10, 15, 20 and 25 N and four different sliding speed as 15, 30, 45 and 60 rpm. Wear behavior on worn surface was investigated using scanning electron microscope(SEM) and energy disperive X-ray spectroscopy(EDS). The dominant wear mechanism of STS316 coating under low applied load and sliding speed was oxidation on worn surface. However, under high applied load and sliding speed the principal wear mechanism was abrasion on oxidation film and damage of oxidation film.

  • The performance and life of a die are influenced by the machining methods. In order to examine the effects of machining methods on surface charactenstics, simple experiments are devised and performed. A die steel STD11, commonly used as a die material in press working, is selected. Three ways of machining methods to manufacture a die are considered. Those are (1) milling and then grinding, (2) wire-cut electric discharge dachining (W-EDM) and (3) heat treatment after W-EDM. The resulting surface roughnesses are measured. Also, the changes of surface microstructures are investigated using the scanning electron microscope(SEM) with energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer(EDS) and the results are discussed in details.
