These studies were made to assess the present stage of resistance to antibiotics, incidence and transferability of R-factors against E. coli. From March to July 1987, 59 strains of E. coli were isolated from specimens of patients collected at university hospitals in Seoul, 64 strains from stools of domestic animals and 66 strains from drainages in Seoul. These specimens were tested for resistance to 12 kinds of antimicrobial agents by means of agar dilution method. Using Muller-Hinton agar for the assay of drug resistance and tryptic soy broth as propagating medium for conjugation. The strains of E. coli were found to be resistant to one or more antibiotics and were considered to be potential donors of R-plasmid. The resistant strains of E. coli isolated from patients, domestic animals and drainages were found to be 55(93%), 33(52%) and 31(47%), respectively. Resistance to Tc, Ap and Cb was the highest in those isolated from patients and drainages, and resistance to Tc, Cm and Sm was the highest in those isolated from domestic animals. In the transfer test of drug resistance by conjugation method, 17 strains (47%) isolated from patients, 15(54%) isolated from domestic animals and 15(56%) isolated from drainages showed positive results, transperable resistant plasmid molecules with variable range in each strain.
This study aims to provide information about the acute poisoning patients transferred by 119 ambulance service for nurses and emergency medical technicians. The data is based on 119 ambulance services patients charts of Seocho area in Seoul. The results were as follows: 1. Total number of emergency patients all over the country has been nearly fourtimes in 1995 compared to 1991. Total number of emergency patients were 322.051 in 1994. 2. About $35\%$ of total E.R. patients were transferred by 119 ambulance services in Seoul in the last 5years. Acute drug intoxication patients occupied $2-3\%$ of E.R. patients in Seoul. 3. About $4\%$ of E.R. patients in Seoul were transferred by 119 E.R. services of Seocho area in Seoul in 1995. Among them $2.4\%$ patients were drug intoxication patients. 4. Data were collected from available patients of 119 ambulance services from Jan. 1993 to Dec. 1995 in Seocho area. Total poisoning patients were 184. - The female/male ratio was 69.7:30.4 and most of patients$(69.7\%)$ were in the age of 20th and 30th. - The busy time of calling 119 ambulance service was from 6P.M. to midnight$(37.5\%)$ - It took within 10 minutes for patients$(62.8\%)$ from notification to arrival in hospital. - Regarding poisoning substances. hypnotics $(22.8\%)$, tranquilizer$(14.7\%)$, agricultural agents$(6.0\%)$ rodenticide$(27\%)$ and others $(10.3\%)$ were in order and unknown were $43.5\%$. - Most of the patients or protector $(72.8\%)$ chose hospitals. Among them $(87.3\%)$ were general hospital. - The most predominant symptoms were coma$(22.3\%)$. dizziness$(6.5\%)$ and then allergy. vomiting. gastrointestinal cramps etc. - Airway management and oxygen administration together was the main medical control of prehospital emergency medical services$(33.7\%)$. It is proposed that first, a systematic survey of drug intoxication patients must be conducted to give an appropriate prehospital emergency care for the emergency medical technician and second, a wide and regular public education to improve understanding of first aids should be undertaken.
Objectives : This study was planned to evaluate clinical status of the alopecia patients who had visited oriental medicine clinic. Methods : 80 patients with alopecia, who had visited oriental medicine clinic from January 2004 to August 2004, were examined. Results & Conclusions : 1. The kinds and incidences of Alopecia : androgenetic alopecia 57.5%(46/80), alopecia areatea 20.0%(16/80), telogen effluvium 16.3%(13/80), seborrheic alopecia 6.3%(5/80). 2. In distribution of sex, the rate of male to female was 1:1 and most patients belonged to 20-30 year old group. 3. The most common onset of age was adolescence(63.8%) and the most common duration of hair loss was 1 to 3 years. 4. Among the 30 male androgenetic alopecia patients, Hamilton's type 4 was most common and among the 16 female androgenetic alopecia patients, Ludwig's type II and III were most common. 5. Family history of baldness in Androgenetic alopecia and alopecia areata were 56.5% and 25.0%, respectively. 6. Self-conscious causes of hair loss : stress(48.8%), irregular eating habits(21.3%), and lack of sleep(20.0%). 7. Associated diseases with alopecia patients : chronic neck pain(58.8%), temporomandibular disorders(55.0%) and seborrheic dermatitis(20.0%). 8. The literature indicates that LINC00174 promotes the growth of colorectal cancer (CRC) cells, but its research needs to be enriched. We tried to explore the function and mechanism of LINC00174 in CRC cell proliferation and migration. Bioinformatics analysis predicted the binding relationship and expressions of lncRNA, miRNA and mRNA. Clinical study analyzes the relationship between LINC00174 and clinical data characteristics of CRC patients. The expressions of LINC00174, miR-3127-5p and E2F7 were verified by RT-qPCR, and the combination of the two was verified by dual luciferase analysis and RNA immunoprecipitation as needed. Western blot was used to detect the expression of EMT-related protein and E2F7 protein. Functional experiments were used to evaluate the function of the target gene on CRC cells. LINC00174 was up-regulated in CRC clinical samples and cells and was related to the clinical characteristics of CRC patients. High-expression of LINC00174, contrary to the effect of siLINC00174, promoted cell viability, proliferation, migration and invasion, up-regulated the expressions of N-Cadherin, Vimentin, E2F7, and inhibited the expression of E-Cadherin. MiR-3127-5p was one of the targeted miRNAs of LINC00174 and was down-regulated in CRC samples. In addition, miR-3127-5p mimic partially reversed the malignant phenotype of CRC cells induced by LINC00174. Besides, E2F7 was a target gene of miR-3127-5p, and LINC00174 repressed miR-3127-5p to regulate E2F7. Our research reveals that LINC00174 affected the biological characteristics of CRC cells through regulated miR-3127-5p/ E2F7 axis.
A total of 102 patients who had an Open Heart Surgery from April 1976 to July 1981 were reviewed. 55 paeitnts were congenital heart disease and 47 patients were acquired heart disease. Among SS patients of congenital heart disease, 18 T 0 F, 18 V S D, 8 A S D, and each one case of l\ulcorner 0 R V, Truncus arteriosus, Ebstein anomaly, Single ventricle, P D A, P 5, A S D + P 5, E C D, V 5 D + P D A, A - P window, D C R V were noted respectively. In 47 patients of acquired heart disease and one Ebstein patient, 46 prosthetic values were implanted: 17 had M V R, 4 had A V R, 2 had M V R + A V R, and 4 had M V R + T V R and one T V R. The operative mortality was 8.S% in acquired heart disease and 17% in congenital heart disease. The follow up period was between 6 months and 6 years. There were 3 cases of late mortality in acquired heart disease and one case in congenital heart disease.
From 1977 through 1984, 97 patients of V.S.D. were treated surgically at Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, Korea University college of Medicine. Among 97 patients, 3 patients were treated by PDA ligation, 3 patients were treated by PDA ligation and subclavian flap aortoplasty, 1 patient were treated by pulmonary artery banding. All of the above patients were analyzed clinically. The results were as follows; 1. Of the patients, 52 patients were male [55.5%] and 45 patients were female [44.5%]. Their age ranged from 7 days to 32 year, and the mean age was 9 year of age and 28.9% of patients were between 4 and 8 year of age. 2. The most common clinical symptoms were frequent U.R.l. and D.O.E.. 3. The most common chest PA findings were cardiomegaly and increased pulmonary vascularity. 4. Associated anomaly was founded in 27 cases and PDA was most common associated anomaly and others were A.S.D., pulmonary stenosis, aortic regurgitation, D.C.R.V.. 5. Pulmonary hypertension was founded in 37 patients and it`s incidence was increased by patient age and shunt amount. 6. On Kirklin`s anatomical classification, type 11 defect was most common [45.5%], and type 1 was 35.5%, and type 111 was 4.4%, and type 1V was 4.4%. 7. Mean E.C.C. time was 69.1 min. and varied by closing method and associated anomaly as in case of simple closure; 47.8 min., in case of patch closure; 77.2 min., in cases with associated anomaly; 92.7 min.. 8. Mean postoperative ventilatory assisted time was 7.3 hour and varied by preoperative pulmonary artery pressure and E.C.C. time, as the group with pulmonary hypertension; 10.5 hour, the group without pulmonary hypertension; 5.5 hour, the group of short E.C.C time [within 1 hour]; 4.4 hour, the group of long E.C.C. time [over 1 hour]; 8.4 hour. 9. Overall operative mortality was 9.3% [9 cases].

We have evaluated the effect of long term treatment of Enicostemma littorale (E. littorale) in type 2 diabetic patients taking pills of aqueous extract of E. littorale regularly as a complimentary medicine for at least 9 months. The effects of E. littorale on glycemic control, lipid profile, cardiac function and DNA damage in these patients were compared with those who had not been regular in taking E. littorale but regular in taking other conventional anti-diabetics. Our data suggest that, E. littorale can maintain normal blood glucose, serum insulin, serum triglycerides levels of type 2 diabetic patients if taken regularly. E. littorale also improves insulin sensitivity, and normalize disturbed lipogram and elevated creatinine levels, thereby produces beneficial effect in preventing cardiovascular complications and may preserve the kidney function. The finding that E. littorale also prevents DNA damage suggest a long term effect in diabetic patients. E. littorale thus can be considered as safe supplementary therapy for a long term and effective management of type 2 diabetic patients.
The endosymbionts of 4 strains of Acanthamoeba(KA/E9, KA/E21, KA/E22, and KA/E23) isolated from the infected corneas of Korean patients were characterized via orcein stain, transmission electron microscopic examination, and 16S rDNA sequence analysis. Double membrane-bound, rod-shaped endosymbionts were distributed randomly throughout both the trophozoites and cysts of each of Acanthamoeba isolates. The endosymbionts of KA/E9, KA/E22, and KA/E23 were surrounded by electron-translucent areas. No lacunae-like structures were observed in the endosymbionts of KA/E21, the bacterial cell walls of which were studded with host ribosomes. Comparative analyses of the 16S rDNA sequences showed that the endosymbionts of KA/E9, KA/E22 and KA/E23 were closely related to Caedibacter caryophilus, whereas the KA/E21 endosymbiont was assigned to the Cytophaga-Flavobacterium-Bacteroides(CFB) phylum. In the 4 strains of Acanthamoeba, the hosts of the endosymbionts were identified as belonging to the Acanthamoeba castellanii complex, which corresponds to the T4 genotype. Acanthamoeba KA/E21 evidenced characteristics almost identical to those of KA/E6, with the exception of the existence of endosymbionts. The discovery of these endosymbionts from Acanthamoeba may prove essential to future studies focusing on interactions between the endosymbionts and the amoebic hosts.
Purpose: House dust mite (HDM) has been suggested to be the most important aeroallergen responsible for atopic asthma in Korea. We aimed to investigate that specific IgE antibodies to HDM and other common indoor aeroallergens contribute differently to total serum IgE and show different relationships with longitudinal fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) measurements in Korean atopic asthmatic patients. Methods: A total of 193 children aged 8 to 16 years with intermittent or mild persistent atopic asthma were recruited. Sera were assayed for total IgE and specific IgE antibodies to HDM and other common indoor allergens. FeNO was serially measured 10 times or more over 2 years when subjects were not receiving controller medications. Results: In 152 children who completed the study, IgE antibodies to specific HDM were more prevalent than those to other common indoor aeroallergens. In addition, IgE antibody titers to HDM were the strongest contributor to total IgE increases. Furthermore, only HDM-specific IgE antibody titer significantly correlated with maximum FeNO (r=0.21, P=0.029) and the rate of FeNO higher than 21 parts per billion (ppb) (r=0.30, P=0.002). Eight patients (5%) were found to have maximum FeNO of 21 ppb or less, suggesting the presence of a low FeNO phenotype among atopic asthmatic patients. Conclusion: The quantity of HDM-specific IgE antibody provides a possible explanation for increases of total IgE and significantly correlates with the amount and frequency of FeNO increases in Korean atopic asthmatic patients.
BACKGROUND: Right ventricular (RV) dysfunction is a significant risk of major adverse cardiac events in patients with acute heart failure (AHF). In this study, we evaluated RV-pulmonary artery (PA) coupling, assessed by tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion (TAPSE)/pulmonary artery systolic pressure (PASP) and assessed its prognostic significance, in AHF patients. METHODS: We measured the TAPSE/PASP ratio and analyzed its correlations with other echocardiographic parameters. Additionally, we assessed its prognostic role in AHF patients. RESULTS: A total of 1147 patients were included in the analysis (575 men, aged 70.81 ± 13.56 years). TAPSE/PASP ratio exhibited significant correlations with left ventricular (LV) ejection fraction(r = 0.243, p < 0.001), left atrial (LA) diameter(r = -0.320, p < 0.001), left atrial global longitudinal strain (LAGLS, r = 0.496, p < 0.001), mitral E/E' ratio(r = -0.337, p < 0.001), and right ventricular fractional area change (RVFAC, r = 0.496, p < 0.001). During the median follow-up duration of 29.0 months, a total of 387 patients (33.7%) died. In the univariate analysis, PASP, TAPSE, and TAPSE/PASP ratio were significant predictors of mortality. After the multivariate analysis, TAPSE/PASP ratio remained a statistically significant parameter for all-cause mortality (hazard ratio [HR], 0.453; p = 0.037) after adjusting for other parameters. In the receiver operating curve analysis, the optimal cut-off level of TAPSE/PASP ratio for predicting mortality was 0.33 (area under the curve = 0.576, p < 0.001), with a sensitivity of 65% and a specificity of 47%. TAPSE/PASP ratio < 0.33 was associated with an increased risk of mortality after adjusting for other variables (HR, 1.306; p = 0.025). CONCLUSIONS: In AHF patients, TAPSE/PASP ratio demonstrated significant associations with RVFAC, LA diameter and LAGLS. Moreover, a decreased TAPSE/PASP ratio < 0.33 was identified as a poor prognostic factor for mortality.
