  • Membrane potential of cells in the isolated rabbit coronary sinus was measured by conventional glass microelectrode and investigated the effect of $[K^+]_0$ variation in control, 20 mM and Ach-containing Tyrode solution. The results obtained were as follows: 1) The resting membrane potential exposed to normal Tyrode solution containing 3 mM $K^+\;was\;about\;-60{\sim}\;-65mV$. At extracellular $K^+$ concentrations from 1 to 30 mM the resting Potential was reasonably well described by Goldman -Hodgkin -Katz equation on the assumption that $[K^+]_1$ was 150 mM and that the ratio of membrane permeability coefficient for $Na^+\;and\;K^+,\;P_{Na}/P_K\;({\alpha})$ was 0.07. 2) In 20 mM Na-Tyrode solution (replacing by equimolar Tris) the resting membrane potential was hyperpolarized by 15 to 20 mV and showed slightly deviated to depolarized direction compared to the predicted value by Goldman-Hodgkin -Katz equation. 3) In the presence of $10^{-6}M$ Ach, the resting potentials at $[K^+]_0$ levels from 1 to 30 mM were well fitted with the predicted value on the assumption that $P_{Na}/P_K$ was 0.0144. It could be concluded that the low resting membrane potential of coronary sinus cells reflects a relatively high ratio $P_{Na}/P_K$ of about 0.07.

  • Results for molecular dynamics simulation method of small liquid drops of argon (N = 1200-14400 molecules) at 94.4 K through a Lennard-Jones intermolecular potential are presented in this paper as a preliminary study of drop systems. We have calculated the density profiles ${\rho}(r)$, and from which the liquid and gas densities ${\rho}_l$ and ${\rho}_g$, the position of the Gibbs' dividing surface $R_o$, the thickness of the interface d, and the radius of equimolar surface $R_e$ can be obtained. Next we have calculated the normal and transverse pressure tensor ${\rho}_N(r)$ and ${\rho}_T(r)$ using Irving-Kirkwood method, and from which the liquid and gas pressures ${\rho}_l$ and ${\rho}_g$, the surface tension ${\gamma}_s$, the surface of tension $R_s$, and Tolman's length ${\delta}$ can be obtained. The variation of these properties with N is applied for the validity of Laplace's equation for the pressure change and Tolman's equation for the effect of curvature on surface tension through two routes, thermodynamic and mechanical.

  • A new constitutive model is proposed for normally consolidated clays. A main skeleton of the proposed model is based on the concepts of the incremental stress-strain theory by Roscoe and Poorooshasb. The equation of the undrained stress path is formulated by introducing the new pore pressure parameter(C), which is the slope of the linear line in the plot of the normalized pore pressure against the stress ratio. Once the stress increment along the constant stress ratio path (followed by untrained stress path) is know, the volumetric strains are calculated from the linear characteristics between void ratio and logarithm of the mean normal stress for any stress ratio. Then the incremental shear strains are successfully predicted by applying the flow rule derived in the modified theory by Roscoe and Burland.

  • A doubly-fed induction generator(DFIG) system has been widely used in the modem wind turbines due to variable-speed operation, high efficiency and small converter size. It is well known that an inter-turn fault of a generator is very difficult to be detected. The DFIG system uses a wound rotor induction machine so that the magnetizing current of the generator can be fed from both the stator and the rotor. This paper proposes a protection algorithm for a DFIG using the d-q equivalent circuit in the time domain. In the case of a DFIG, the voltages and currents of the rotor side as well as the voltages and currents of the stator are available. The proposed algorithm estimates the instantaneous(i.e., converted into the stationary frame) induced voltages from the rotor and the stator sides. If the difference between the two estimated induced voltages exceeds the threshold, the proposed algorithm detects the inter-turn fault. The algorithm can detect a inter-turn fault of a winding. The performance of the proposed algorithm is validated using a PSCAD/EMTDC simulator under inter-turn fault conditions and normal operating conditions such as an external fault and the change of the wind speed.

  • Thin films of YB $a_{2}$C $u_{3}$$O_{7-x}$ supercondYB $a_{2}$C $u_{3}$$O_{7-x}$uctor were prepared on (100) SrTi $O_{3}$ substrates by pulsed laser deposition using visible light laser. Q-switched Nd:YAG(532 nm, 30 ns) pulsed laser was used for deposition. The effects of substrate temperature and oxygen pressure during deposition on films were studied. Critical current density of 2.93*10$^{6}$ A/c $m^{2}$ at 77K and Tc(zero)=91.7K were obtained from the film prepared with Tsub=745.deg. C and $P_{02}$=200 mTorr. XRD analysis showed that the grown film has c-axis normal orientation to the substrate surface and has single phase. Surface morphology of the film has been improved by interfering the plume ejected from YB $a_{2}$C $u_{3}$$O_{7-x}$ target.arget.t.

  • In this paper, we propose a novel method for road recognition using 3D point clouds based on a Markov random field (MRF) framework in unstructured and complex road environments. The proposed method is focused on finding a solution for an analysis of traversable regions in challenging environments without considering an assumption that has been applied in many past studies; that is, that the surface of a road is ideally flat. The main contributions of this research are as follows: (a) guidelines for the best selection of the gradient value, the average height, the normal vectors, and the intensity value and (b) how to mathematically transform a road recognition problem into a classification problem that is based on MRF modeling in spatial and visual contexts. In our experiments, we used numerous scans acquired by an HDL-64E sensor mounted on an experimental vehicle. The results show that the proposed method is more robust and reliable than a conventional approach based on a quantity evaluation with ground truth data for a variety of challenging environments.

  • In recent years, concrete-filled box or tubular columns have been commonly used in high-rise buildings. However, a number of fire test results show that there are significant differences between high strength concrete (HSC) and normal strength concrete (NSC) after being subjected to high temperatures. Therefore, this paper presents an investigation on the fire resistance of HSC filled steel tubular columns (CFTCs) under combined temperature and loading. Two groups of full-size specimens were fabricated to consider the effect of type of concrete infilling (plain and reinforced) and the load level on the fire resistance of CFTCs. Prior to fire test, a constant compressive load (i.e., load level for fire design) was applied to the column specimens. Thermal load was then applied on the column specimens in form of ISO 834 standard fire curve in a large-scale laboratory furnace until the set experiment termination condition was reached. The results demonstrate that the higher the axial load level, the worse the fire resistance. Moreover, in the bar-reinforced concrete-filled steel tubular columns, the presence of rebars not only decreased the spread of cracks and the sudden loss of strength, but also contributed to the load-carrying capacity of the concrete core.

  • Computation of moving interface by the level set method typically requires the reinitialization of level set function. An inaccurate estimation of level set function $\phi$ results in incorrect free-surface capturing and thus errors such as mass gain/loss. Therefore, an accurate and robust reinitialization process is essential to the simulation of free-surface flows. In the present paper, we pursue further development of the reinitialization process, which evaluates level set function directly using a normal vector on the interface without solving there-distancing equation of hyperbolic type. The Taylor-Galerkin approximation and P1P1 splitting/SUPG (Streamline Upwind Petrov-Galerkin) FEM are adopted to discretize advection equation of the level set function and the incompressible Navier-Stokes equation, respectively. Advection equation and re-initialization process of free surface capturing are validated with benchmark problems, i.e., a broken dam flow and timereversed single vortex flow. The simulation results are in good agreement with the existing results.
