Prevalence of malocclusions and parafunctional habits in pediatric patients with developmental dyslexia

  • Objective: The study aimed to assess the prevalence of dental malocclusion, orthodontic parameters, and parafunctional habits in children with developmental dyslexia (DD). Methods: Forty pediatric patients (67.5% boys and 32.5% girls, mean age: 11.02 ± 2.53 years, range: 6-15 years) with DD were compared with 40 age- and sex-matched healthy participants for prevalence of dental malocclusion, orthodontic parameters, and parafunctional habits. Dental examinations were performed by an orthodontist. Results: Pediatric patients with DD exhibited a significantly higher prevalence of Angle Class III malocclusion (22.5% vs. 5.0%, P = 0.024), deep bite (27.5% vs. 7.5%, P = 0.019), midline deviation (55.0% vs. 7.5%, P < 0.0001), midline diastemas (32.5% vs. 7.5%, P = 0.010), wear facets (92.5% vs. 15.0%, P < 0.0001), self-reported nocturnal teeth grinding (82.5% vs. 7.5%, P < 0.0001), nail biting (35.0% vs. 0.0%, P < 0.0001), and atypical swallowing (85.0% vs. 17.5%, P < 0.0001) compared to that in healthy controls. Conclusions: Pediatric patients with DD showed a higher prevalence of Class III malocclusion, greater orthodontic vertical and transverse discrepancies, and incidence of parafunctional activities. Clinicians and dentists should be aware of the vulnerability of children with dyslexia for exhibiting malocclusion and encourage early assessment and multidisciplinary intervention.

Korean first graders' word decoding skills, phonological awareness, rapid automatized naming, and letter knowledge with/without developmental dyslexia (초등 1학년 발달성 난독 아동의 낱말 해독, 음운인식, 빠른 이름대기, 자소 지식)

  • This study aims to compare the word decoding skills, phonological awareness (PA), rapid automatized naming (RAN) skills, and letter knowledge of first graders with developmental dyslexia (DD) and those who were typically developing (TD). Eighteen children with DD and eighteen TD children, matched by nonverbal intelligence and discourse ability, participated in the study. Word decoding of Korean language-based reading assessment(Pae et al., 2015) was conducted. Phoneme-grapheme correspondent words were analyzed according to whether the word has meaning, whether the syllable has a final consonant, and the position of the grapheme in the syllable. Letter knowledge asked about the names and sounds of 12 consonants and 6 vowels. The children's PA of word, syllable, body-coda, and phoneme blending was tested. Object and letter RAN was measured in seconds. The decoding difficulty of non-words was more noticeable in the DD group than in the TD one. The TD children read the syllable initial and syllable final position with 99% correctness. Children with DD read with 80% and 82% correctness, respectively. In addition, the DD group had more difficulty in decoding words with two patchims when compared with the TD one. The DD group read only 57% of words with two patchims correctly, while the TD one read 91% correctly. There were significant differences in body-coda PA, phoneme level PA, letter RAN, object RAN, and letter-sound knowledge between the two groups. This study confirms the existence of Korean developmental dyslexics, and the urgent need for the inclusion of a Korean-specific phonics approach in the education system.

COGNITIVE CHARACTERISTICS OF CHILDREN WITH DYSLEXIA AND/OR ATTENTION DEFICIT/HYPERACTIVITY DISORDER (읽기 장애 아동과 주의력 결핍/과잉 활동장애 아동의 인지적 특성)

  • The present study was conducted to investigate cognitive characteristics of children with dyslexia and/or attention deficit/hyperacidity disorder. Cognitive characteristics were evaluated by using KEDI-WISC, the Basic Achievement Test, TOVA, MFFT, and neuropsychological tests. ADHD group showed significantly lower level of performance in response time for correct responses and presented variability for correct responses in TOVA. Dyslexia and mixed group showed lower performance in Reading I and Reading II, Writing subtest in the Basic Achievement Test than those of ADHD group and in Information subtest of KEDI-WfSC. In order rd determine the diagnostic effectiveness of each psychological tests, discriminant analysis was conducted. In this analysis, 11 subtests of KEDI-WISC and 4 variables of TOVA, 4 subtests of the Basic Achievement Test, and MFFT, WCST were included as independent variables and each diagnostic roups were dependent variables. Discriminant analysis indicated that overall percentage of correct classification was 93.88%. The clinical implifications and limitations of the present study were listed and discussed.

A Study on the Service Model of the Public Libraries for Dyslexics (공공도서관의 난독인 정보봉사 모델에 관한 연구)

  • At present there is a increasing interest on dyslexia, not only medical science, psychology and linguistics but also special education studies in Korea. Unfortunately that is not yet in library and information sciences. This study is intended to develop the service model of the public libraries for dylexics in Korea. In order to accomplish the intention, the service models of the public libraries are benchmarked in the northern European countries, namely, Sweden, Denmark, and Finland. The service model developed in the study is applicable in school and university libraries as well.

  • This purpose of study is to develop a dyslexia check list for students in middle and high school. To ensure the contents validity, researching related studies was conducted, and then factors and items were made under the 5 experts advisory. The pilot test was done on 265 students who are in middle and high school. To obtain the reliability, SPSS 21,0 was conducted as exploratory factor analysis and to confirm the goodness of fit test, AMOS 7.0 was done as confirmatory factor analysis. The results of study are as below, firstly, 8 measure factors and 34 items were ensured. Secondly, in exploratory analysis, Crombach ${\alpha}=.920$ was obtained, it was high value. Thirdly. in confirmatory factor analysis, the absolute fit index : GFI=.920, RMR=.057, RMSEA=.062 and incremental fit index : CGI=.960, TLI=.977 were ensured. Above results, the developed measurement tool for students in middle and high school in this study was confirmed as a suitable one.

The effect of eueing technique in acquired Hangul dyslexia (후천성 한글 난독증에서의 단서 주기 효과)

  • 뇌손상에 기인하는 한글 난독증의 어휘처리 양상을 분석하여 한글정보처리의 특성을 알아보고자 하였다. 피험자 PSK의 한글 어휘처리에서 특히 주목되는 점은 단어의 음독은 가능하나, 비단어의 음독은 불가능하였다는 것이다. PSK의 한글 어휘처리는, 자소-음소변환(grapheme-phoneme conversion)경로가 선택적으로 손상되어, 심성어휘집(mental lexicon)의 발음정보를 이용하는 직접경로에 의해서 이루어진다고 판단된다. 읽기(reading)와 그림명명(picture naming)에서 나타난 오류들에 대하여, 음운적 단서(phonological cueing)를 제시하였다. 그 결과, 읽기 수행에서는 단서 주기 효과가 나타나지 않았으나 그림명명에서는 수행상의 향상이 나타났다. 또한, 1음절어의 읽기 수행에서는 규칙효과가 나타나지 않았으나 2음절어의 읽기 수행에서는 빈도와 규칙성의 상호작용이 나타났다. 이것은, PSK의 1음절어와 2음절어에 대한 읽기 수행이 상이한 경로에서 이루어질 가능성을 시사한다.

A Literature Review on Reading Fluency (읽기 유창성에 관한 문헌연구)

  • Reading fluency is an important variable in reading comprehension. However, a limited number of studies on reading fluency are available in Korea. The purpose of this study is to review the articles about reading fluency during last 10 years and to present a direction for future research. Forty research papers from the Journal of Learning Disabilities and Language Speech and Hearing Services in Schools were selected from 2002 to 2012. These papers were analyzed in terms of their subjects and research methods. About 64% of the articles focused on typically developing children and children with dyslexia. About 67% of the research consisted of descriptive studies. Based on these results, suggestions were made for future research on reading fluency.

  • 언어와 인지분야에 관한 연구는 뇌 관련연구 중에 핵심 분야 중의 하나로 뇌의 신경학적 손상으로 언어기능을 상실하는 실어증 및 언어장애에 대한 연구는 매우 중요한 분야이다. 글자를 보고도 읽지 못하는 난독증 환자의 경우 제시되는 그림이나 단어를 얼마나 빠른 시간 안에 반응하는가를 알아내는 것은 치료에 중요한 역할을 한다. 그러나 한국 언어의 특성상 해외의 검사 및 치료도구를 수정 없이 사용하기가 어렵다. 본 논문에서는 난독증 환자를 정확하게 진 단 및 분류할 수 있는 도구를 개발한다. 이러한 시스템 설계에 있어 고려사항을 파악하고 정확한 데이터를 얻기 위해 시스템의 접근사항을 서술한다. 또한, 구현하는 시스템의 발전 방향에 대하여 논한다.

  • 본 논문에서는 뇌손상으로 인하여 난독증을 보이는 환자를 대상으로 시각적 단어 재인과정에 대한 평가와 기능적 자기공명영상기법을 통한 언어처리과정의 대뇌활성 양상을 살펴봄으로써 난독증의 특성을 알아보고자 한다. 인지신경심리학적 언어행동평가를 통해 환자 JYM는 자소-음소 변환(grapheme-phoneme conversion)경로와 직접 경로(direct route) 모두가 손상된 심층성 난독증(deep dyslexia)으로 보이며. 기능적 자기공명영상촬영 결과 언어처리과정에서 특정한 언어관련영역보다 등외측전전두영역과 시각피질의 활성이 증가되는 양상을 나타냈다.
