  • This paper addresses characteristics of compressible flow dynamics inside a pipe with an accumulator and an inlet orifice. It also presents a simple but stable numerical method associated with the accumulator-orifice calculation. In particular, a focus is given to developing a method of finding an optimum design of the accumulator-orifice system (i.e., the accumulator size and the throttle resistance) that gives the most effective dissipation of the water-hammering problem. It is found that there exists indeed an optimum set of parameter values for the most effective dissipation of the wave energy.

  • This paper proposes a novel multicasting algorithm, called ANMAS (Ad hoc Network Multicasting with Ant System), for Mobile Ad hoc Network (MANET). The algorithm utilizes the indirect communication method of the ants via 'pheromone' to effectively obtain dynamical topology change information, generating safer multicasting paths, and adapts the well-known CBT (Core Based Tree) multicasting algorithm into the ANMAS framework with proper modificiations to make 'tolerable' multicasting group in the MANET environment. We show the efficiency and the effectiveness of ANMAS via simulation studies.

  • Cellular Automata is a discrete dynamical system that can be completely described in terms of local relation. For any given image, the system can save its features as well as increase or decrease the brightness of it locally through consideration of optimized transition in succession. These transitions in succession satisfy the function "Lyapunov" and have sequential movements. This study suggests the way of noise reduction for each image with the use of the Sequential Cellular Automata system. The mentioned transition in succession gives stable results with high-convergence performance to random noises and PSNR (Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio) using histograms and MSE (Mean Square Error) for verification of effectiveness.

  • The domain of attraction of a nonlinear differential equations is the region of initial points of solution tending to the equilibrium points of the systems as the time going. Determining the domain of attraction is one of the most important problems to investigate nonlinear dynamical systems. In this article, we first present two algorithms to determine the domain of attraction by using the moment matrices. In addition, as an application we consider a class of SIRS infection model and discuss asymptotical stability by Lyapunov method, and also estimate the domain of attraction by using the algorithms.

  • In this paper, we present a new guidance law for a reusable launch vehicle (RLV) that lands vertically after reentry. In our past studies, a guidance law was developed for a vertical/soft landing to a target point. The guidance law, which is analytically obtained, can regenerate a trajectory against disturbances because it is expressed in the form of state feedback. However, the guidance law does not necessarily guarantee a vertical/soft landing when a dynamical system such as an RLV includes a nonlinear phenomenon owing to the atmosphere of the earth. In this study, we introduce a design of the guidance law for a nonlinear system to achieve a vertical/soft landing on the ground using the exact linearization method and solving the two-point boundary-value problem for the derived linear system. Numerical simulation confirmed the validity of the proposed guidance law for an RLV in an atmospheric environment.

  • This paper describes the design of a robust adaptive controller for a nonlinear dynamical system with unknown nonlinearities. These unknown nonlinearities are approximated by multilayered neural networks (MNNs) whose parameters are adjusted on-line, according to some adaptive laws far controlling the output of the nonlinear system, to track a given trajectory. The main contribution of this paper is a method for considering input constraint with a rigorous stability proof. The Lyapunov synthesis approach is used to develop a state-feedback adaptive control algorithm based on the adaptive MNN model. An overall control system guarantees that the tracking error converges at about zero and that all signals involved are uniformly bounded even in the presence of input saturation. Theoretical results are illustrated through a simulation example.

  • A new mathematical model to predict the beam pointing instability of a nonconservative two-body satellite system in spinning injection mode has been developed by using Newton-Euler and projection methods. Since the on-axis and null axis of the omni antenna with toroidal pattern beam form a right angle, wobbling of the antenna on-axis is measured by determining the Euler angles which represent the orientation of the satellite's spin axis. Because of the complexity of the system which is a time varying, nonstationary, nonlinear dynamical system, a numerical method is used for the analysis. Computer simulation results present the effects of the mass distribution and internal mass motion on the antenna beam pointing.

  • This paper proposes a totally new method in the chaos characteristics analysis of power systems, the introduction of topological invariants. Using a return histogram the bifurcation graph was drawn, the periodic orbits and topological invariants the local crossing number, relative rotation rates, and linking number during the process of period-doubting bifurcation and chaos were extracted. This study also examined the effect on the topological invariants when the sensitive parameters were varied. In addition, the topological invariants of a three-dimensional embedding of the strange attractor was extracted and the result was compared with those obtained from differential equations. This could be a new way for a state detection and fault diagnosis in a dynamical system.

  • A nonlinear dissipative dynamical system can often have multiple attractors. In this case, it is important to study the global behavior of the system by determining the global domain of attraction of each attractor. In this paper we study the global behavior of a forced beam with two mode interaction. The governing equation of motion is reduced to two second-order nonlinear nonautonomous ordinary differential equations. When .omega. /=3.omega.$_{1}$ and .ohm.=.omega $_{1}$, the system can have two asymptotically stable steady-state periodic solutions, where .omega./ sub 1/, .omega.$_{2}$ and .ohm. denote natural frequencies of the first and second modes and the excitation frequency, respectively. Both solutions have the same period as the excitation period. Therefore each of them shows up as a period-1 solution in Poincare map. We show how interpolated mapping method can be used to determine the two four-dimensional domains of attraction of the two solutions in a very effective way. The results are compared with the ones obtained by direct numerical integration.

  • As occurrence of gradually increasing extreme temperature events in Jeju Island, a hybrid downscaling technique that simultaneously applies by dynamical method and statistical method has implemented on design rainfall in order to reduce flood damages from severe storms and typhoons. As a result of computation, Case 1 shows a strong tendency to excessively compute rainfall, which is continuously increasing. While Case 2 showed similar trend as Case 1, low design rainfall has computed by rainfall in A1B scenario. Based on the design rainfall computation method mainly used in Preventive Disaster System through Pre-disaster Effect Examination System and Basic Plan for River of Jeju Island which are considering climatic change for selecting 50-year and 100-year frequencies. Case 3 selecting for Jeju rain gage station and Case 1 for Seogwipo rain gage station. The results were different for each rain gage station because of difference in rainfall characteristics according to recent climatic change, and the risk of currently known design rainfall can be increased in near future.
