The Effect of Dynamic Behavior on Changing Pile Cap Size of Pile Group in Sandy Soil (사질토 지반에서 말뚝 캡 크기가 무리말뚝의 동적거동에 미치는 영향)

  • A pile group, that consists of several piles connected by a pile cap, is used as the superstructure. The pile supports vertical and horizontal load to design the pile group, but the effect of bearing capacity of the pile cap has not considered. Various researches have been conducted to reflect the effect of bearing capacity of the pile cap in order to reduce the amount of piles in the range of the stability under the vertical load of the superstructure. However, the effect of bearing capacity under the horizontal seismic load has not been studied adequately. Therefore, a shaking table test was carried out with different-sized pile caps that support the superstructure in this study. This test was to verify the influence of the size of the pile cap in the group pile under the horizontal load. The result shows that the size of the pile cap affects to the dynamic behavior of the superstructure and the pile group. Also, the bigger size of the pile group makes the larger constraint effect of ground, and it results that both the ground and the pile moves as a whole.

A Study on the Allowable Bearing Capacity of Pile by Driving Formulas (각종 항타공식에 의한 말뚝의 허용지지력 연구)

  • The estimation of pile bearing capacity is important since the design details are determined from the result. There are numerous ways of determining the pile design load, but only few of them are chosen in the actual design. According to the recent investigation in Korea, the formulas proposed by Meyerhof based on the SPT N values are most frequently chosen in the design stage. In the study, various static and dynamic formulas have been used in predicting the allowable bearing capacity of a pile. Further, the reliability of these formulas has been verified by comparing the perdicted values with the static and dynamic load test measurements. Also in cases, these methods of pile bearing capacity determination do not take the time effect consideration, the actual allowable load as determined from pile load test indicates severe deviation from the design value. The principle results of this study are summarized as follows : A a result of estimate the reliability in criterion of the Davisson method, in was showed that Terzaghi & Peck > Chin > Meyerhof > Modified Meyerhof method was the most reliable method for the prediction of bearing capacity. Comparisons of the various pile-driving formulas showed that Modified Engineering News was the most reliable method. However, a significant error happened between dynamic bearing capacity equation was judged that uncertainty of hammer efficiency, characteristics of variable , time effect etc... was not considered. As a result of considering time effect increased skin friction capacity higher than end bearing capacity. It was found out that it would be possible to increase the skin friction capacity 1.99 times higher than a driving. As a result of considering 7 day's time effect, it was obtained that Engineering News. Modified Engineering News. Numerical analysis of an innovative expanding pile under static and dynamic loading

  • Designing pile foundations subjected to the uplift forces such as buildings, oil platforms, and anchors is becoming increasingly concerned. In this paper, the conceptual design of a new type of driven piles called expanding pile is presented and assessed. Some grooves have been created in the shaft of the novel pile, and some moveable arms have been designed at the pile tip. At first, static analyses using the finite element method were performed to evaluate the effectiveness of the innovative pile on the axial bearing capacity. Then its effect on seismic behavior of moment frame is considered. Results show that the expanding arms were provided an ideal anchorage system because of the soil's noticeable locking-up effect increasing uplift bearing capacity. For example at the end of the static tensile loading procedure, displacement decrement up to 55 percent is observed. In addition, comparing the uplift bearing capacity of the usual and new pile with different lengths in sand and clay layers shows noticeable effect and sharp increase up to about two times especially in longer piles. Besides, a sensible reduction in the seismic response and the stresses in the beam-column connection between 23-36 percent are achieved that ensures better seismic behavior of the structures.

A Comparative Study on the Bearing Capacity of Dynamic Load Test and Static Load Test of PHC Bored Pile (PHC 매입말뚝의 동재하시험과 정재하시험의 지지력 비교·분석 연구)

  • In case of USA, the drilled shaft and the driven pile in the field showed a good correlation in the analysis of the bearing capacity between the dynamic load test and the static load test. However, in Korea, we mainly install the bored pile, which is not widely used overseas and we tried to confirm the reliability of the dynamic load test on the bored pile, because many people questioned the reliability of it. In this study, load tests were carried out on PHC bored piles in LH field (Cheonan, Incheon, Uijeongbu), and the bearing capacity of the dynamic load test (EOID 7times, Restrike 7times) and the static load test (7times) were compared and analyzed. As a result, the average of the bearing capacity of the static load test was 27% higher than that of the dynamic load test (reliability : 0.73, coefficient of variation : 0.3). And the average of the bearing capacity of the static load test (Davisson) was 27% higher than that of the bearing capacity of the dynamic load test (Davisson) (reliability : 0.73, coefficient of variation : 0.2). To reduce the difference between the bearing capacity of the dynamic load test and the static load test, we proposed modified bearing capacity of dynamic load test (base bearing capacity of EOID + skin frictional force of restrike) and difference between the bearing capacities was reduced to 9% (reliability : 0.91, coefficient of variation : 0.2). And the coefficient of variation was reduced to 0.2 and the consistency of analysis increased.

Bearing capacity of large diameter PHC pile and large diameter composite pile (대구경 PHC말뚝 및 대구경 복합말뚝($\phi$1,000mm) 지지력 산정에 관한 연구)

  • Large PHC piles with a diameter of 1,000mm or larger were recently introduced for the first time in Korea. This paper presents full-scale static and dynamic pile load tests performed on two 1,000mm PHC piles and two composite piles with steel pipe piles of the same diameter in the upper portion, installed by driving and pre-boring. The objectives of the tests include evaluating pile drivability, load-settlement relation, allowable bearing capacity, and the stability of mechanical splicing element for the composite pile(a.k.a. non-welding joint). The performance of the large diameter PHC piles were thought to be satisfactory compared to that of middle sized PHC piles with a long history of successful applications in the domestic and foreign markets.

The Effect of Bearing Capacity Increasement for Driven Pile in Silt (실트지반에 타입된 말뚝의 지지력 증가효과)

  • Recently, for the design of pile foundations on the soft ground condition, it is recognized that set-up effects are another important factor which influence the characteristics of bearing capacity of pile. In this paper, the thirteen dynamic pile loading tests were performed at the two different construction sites and the end of initial driving(EOID) were also performed and then restrike tests were performed after certain time lag. The H-pile, pipe pile, PHC pile are installed by driving into the loose silty soil and then restrike tests were performed. Nine days after pile driving, the bearing capacity of H and pipe pile were increased whereas there is not bearing capacity increasement with PHC pile. When the dense silty soil, the restrike test results showed that the bearing capacity of H and pipe pile increased up to 1.17 times. The 1-st and 2-nd restrike tests performed after 6 and 12 day, respectively. The results showed that the bearing capacity of PHC pile was decreased but the bearing capacity of piles were increased up to 1.38 times after 13 days with the third restrike test.

An application of wave equation analysis program to pile dynamic formulae

  • Wave equation analysis programs (WEAP) such as GRLWEAP and TNOWave were primarily developed for pre-driving analysis. They can also be used for post-driving measurement applications with some refinements. In the case of pre-driving analysis, the programs are used for the purpose of selecting the right equipment for a given ground condition and controlling stresses during pile driving processes. Recently, the program is increasingly used for the post-driving measurement application, where an assessment based on a variety of input parameters such as hammer, driving system and dynamic behaviour of soil is carried out. The process of this type of analysis is quite simple and it is performed by matching accurately known parameters, such as from CAPWAP analysis, to the parameters used in GRLWEAP analysis. The parameters that are refined in the typical analysis are pile stresses, hammer energy, capacity, damping and quakes. Matching of these known quantities by adjusting hammer, cushion and soil parameters in the wave equation program results in blow counts or sets and stresses for other hammer energies and capacities and cushion configuration. The result of this analysis is output on a Bearing Graph that establishes a relationship between ultimate capacity and net set per blow. A further application of this refinement method can be applied to the assessment of dynamic formulae, which are extensively used in pile capacity calculation during pile driving process. In this paper, WEAP analysis is carried out to establish the relationship between the ultimate capacities and sets using the various parameters and using this relationship to recalibrate the dynamic formula. The results of this analysis presented show that some of the shortcoming of the dynamic formula can be overcome and the results can be improved by the introduction of a correction factor.

Analysis of Bearing Capacity of Rock Socketed Pre-Bored Super Strength Piles Based on Dynamic Load Test Results (동재하시험을 통한 선단이 암반에 근입된 초고강도 매입 PHC 말뚝의 지지력 특성 분석)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics of bearing capacity of pre-bored super strength PHC (SSPHC) piles socketed in rocks based on dynamic load test results. Because the SSPHC piles have high compressive concrete strengths compared with those of regular high strength PHC piles, the allowable structural strengths of the SSPHC piles were increased. For optimal design of the super strength PHC piles, the geotechnical bearing capacity of the SSPHC piles should also increased to balance the increased allowable structural strength of the SSPHC piles. Current practices of pile installation apply the same amount of driving energy on both SSPHC and high strength PHC piles. As results of analyzing factors that influence bearing strength of SSPHC piles using dynamic load test, there was no relationship between SPT-N value at pile toe and end bearing capacity. But driving energy effects on end bearing capacity. In case of skin friction, driving energy had no effects. And reasonable method verifying design bearing strength is necessary because end bearing capacity is not considered sufficiently in restrike test results.

Drivability of Offshore Pile Foundation at Ieodo Ocean Research Station (이어도 해양과학기지 말뚝기초의 항타 관입성 연구)

  • When pile foundation is constructed by dynamic method, it is desirable to perform monitoring of drivability with pile penetration. Dynamic pile monitoring yields information regarding driving hammer, cushion, pile and soil behaviour that can be used to confirm the assumptions of wave equation analysis. In this study, dynamic monitoring of the steel pipe pile was performed with Pile Driving Analyser (PDA). The PDA utilizes the wave propagation theory to compute numerous variables which describe the conditions of the hammer-pile-soil system in real-time and following each hammer impact. This approach allows immediate field verification of hammer performance, driving efficiency, and estimation of pile bearing capacity. A series of PDA test were performed at the Ieodo Ocean Research Station (IORS) located in southeast of Marado, a southernmost small island south of Jeju Island. The drilling core sediments of Ieodo subsoil are composed of mud and sand, showing lamination and wavy or lenticular bedding, which were often bioturbated. This paper summarizes the results of PDA tests which were applied in measurement and estimation of large diameter open ended steel pipe pile driven by steam hammer, Vulcan-560 and MRBS-4600, at the marine sediments.
