  • In this paper, we propose an optimal scheduling scheme that minimizes the energy consumption of a real-time video task on the multi-core platform supporting dynamic voltage and frequency scaling. Exploiting parallel execution on multiple cores for less energy consumption, the propose scheme allocates an appropriate number of cores to the task execution, turns off the power of unused cores, and assigns the lowest clock frequency meeting the deadline. Our experiments show that the proposed scheme saves a significant amount of energy, up to 67% and 89% of energy consumed by two previous methods that execute the task on a single core and on all cores respectively.

  • The major source of noise in the process of transporting liquids is related to the cavitation phenomenon. The control valve noise is mostly dominated by bubble dynamics under cavitating conditions. In this investigation, an orifice configuration is set-up to correlate its flow-field and acoustic signatures with those from a control valve device. The performance and noise characteristics form the orifice configuration in anechoic surroundings were measured to reveal the noise sources depending on pressure differences across the orifice configuration. The sound powers from the orifice configuration are effectively normalized using proposed scaling parameters. Flow-excited dynamic systems for which there is no strong coupling between the flow and the system response can be described using a linear source-filter model. On this assumption, the normalized sound powers can be decomposed of noise source function and a response function. To find noise sources, pressure spectra measured over a range of pressure differences are transformed into the product of two non-dimensional frequency function : $P_{ss}(He,f_{ca},x/D) = F(f_{ca})\;G(He,x/D)$. This scheme of finding noise sources is shown to be applicable to the cavitation noise from the control valve effectively Two kinds of cavitating modes based on our experimental data are found and discussed.

  • The extended slip-weakening model was investigated by using a compiled set of source-spectrum-related parameters, i.e. seismic moment Mo, S-wave velocity Vs, corner-frequency fc, and source-controlled high-cut frequency fmax, for 113 shallow crustal earthquakes (focal depth less than 25 km, MW 3.0~7.5) that occurred in Japan from 1987 to 2016. The investigation was focused on the characteristics of stress drop, radiation energy-to-seismic moment ratio, radiation efficiency, and fracture energy release rate, Gc. The scaling relationships of those source parameters were also investigated and compared with those in previous studies, which were based on generally used singular models with the dimensionless numbers corresponding to fc given by Brune and Madariaga. The results showed that the stress drop from the singular model with Madariaga's dimensionless number was equivalent to the breakdown stress drop, as well as Brune's effective stress, rather than to static stress drop as has been usually assumed. The scale dependence of stress drop showed a different tendency in accordance with the size category of the earthquakes, which may be divided into small-moderate earthquakes and moderate-large earthquakes by comparing to Mo = 1017~1018 Nm. The scale dependence was quite similar to that shown by Kanamori and Rivera. The scale dependence was not because of a poor dynamic range of recorded signals or missing data as asserted by Ide and Beroza, but rather it was because of the scale dependent Vr-induced local similarity of spectrum as shown in a previous study by the authors. The energy release rate Gc with respect to breakdown distance Dc from the extended slip-weakening model coincided with that given by Ellsworth and Beroza in a study on the rupture nucleation phase; and the empirical relationship given by Abercrombie and Rice can represent the results from the extended slip-weakening model, the results from laboratory stick-slip experiments by Ohnaka, and the results given by Ellsworth and Beroza simultaneously. Also the energy flux into the breakdown zone was well correlated with the breakdown stress drop, ${\tilde{e}}$ and peak slip velocity of the fault faces. Consequently, the investigation results indicate the appropriateness of the extended slip-weakening model.

  • In general, infrared images have less sharpness and image details than visible images. So, the prior image upscaling methods are not effective in the infrared images. In order to solve this problem, this paper proposes an algorithm which initially up-scales an input infrared (IR) image by using adaptive dynamic range encoding (ADRC)-based super-resolution (SR) method, and then fuses the result with the corresponding visible images. The proposed algorithm consists of a up-scaling phase and a fusion phase. First, an input IR image is up-scaled by the proposed ADRC-based SR algorithm. In the dictionary learning stage of this up-scaling phase, so-called 'pre-emphasis' processing is applied to training-purpose high-resolution images, hence better sharpness is achieved. In the following fusion phase, high-frequency information is extracted from the visible image corresponding to the IR image, and it is adaptively weighted according to the complexity of the IR image. Finally, a up-scaled IR image is obtained by adding the processed high-frequency information to the up-scaled IR image. The experimental results show than the proposed algorithm provides better results than the state-of-the-art SR, i.e., anchored neighborhood regression (A+) algorithm. For example, in terms of just noticeable blur (JNB), the proposed algorithm shows higher value by 0.2184 than the A+. Also, the proposed algorithm outperforms the previous works even in terms of subjective visual quality.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study was to examine the oral health behavior of shipbuilding company workers in some regions in a bid to provide information on the oral health plans for industrial fields. Methods : The subjects in this study were 310 workers in 10 shipbuilding companies and suppliers in Jeolla Namdo Province, on whom a self-administered survey was conducted. Results : 1. Concerning general information about the subjects who participated in the research, gender was possessed 94.8% by men and 5.2% by women. Age was the largest in 31~40 years old with 44.2%. Marital status was the largest in the married with 64.5%. It was the largest in under high school graduate with 71.9% for academic background, in 2,000,000 won~3,000,000 won with 49.0% for monthly family income, and in cooking with 33.9% for work field. 2. Research subjects' toothbrushing time was indicated to be the largest in after having breakfast. It was indicated to be twice a day with 41.3% for toothbrushing frequency. 90.3% of the respondents are not using auxiliary oral hygiene devices. 3. Recognition on periodontal health status was found larger in workers whose response was that their own periodontal health status is 'healthy' than workers who responded that their status is 'not healthy.' Workers, who don't have subjective symptom on periodontal status, were indicated to be larger. 4. Ratio of subjects with tooth scaling experience accounted for 59.7%. The ratio of tooth scaling experience was indicated to be different depending on academic background and monthly family income. Conclusions : Academic credential, monthly family income and the line of work were identified as the main factors to affect oral health care of the shipbuilding workers. Oral health education and dynamic implementation of corporate oral health promotion which are designed to meet the needs of workers are required.

  • A mathematical model, GUNBLAST, of blast waves emitted from a gun muzzle is established, and structural response analyses for the blast load are performed. The blast wave can be divided into two kinds of waves, free field and reflected blast waves. In this research, the free field blast wave model is established by the use of a scaling approach, and the reflected blast wave is calculated by using the oblique shock theory and computational fluid dynamic calculation. GUNBLAST is applied to two kinds of structural models. To investigate the effect of the muzzle distance from a structural surface, the blast waves on a plate for various muzzle distances are compared to uniform loads. Moreover, the transient response analysis of an aircraft wing model with a 12.7mm gun is carried out by using MSC/NASTRAN. From the results, it can be shown that the blast wave can cause broad random vibration and high frequency damage to equipments mounted in the aircraft.

  • Phase detector techique provides a unique probe to membrane recycling phenomenon by enabling dynamic monitoring of cell membrane capacitance. However, it has inherent errors due to constant changes in measurement environments. The present study analyzed several error sources to develope application criteria of this technique. and the following was found based on a theoretical analysis. The initial phase angle has to be appropriately selected to minimize the error due to perturbation of access and membrane conductances. Excitation frequency is also important to determine the initial phase angle. However. deviation of the phase angle from a predetermined initial value during the measurement period does not affect capacitance estimation to a significant degree. Despite an appropriate initial phase selection an error in scaling factor is expected for a large increase in capacitance during exocytosis. which may be overcome by iteratively correcting the scaling factor over the measurement period. These results will provide a useful guideline in practical application of this technique.

  • This paper describes an integrated low pass filter fabricated by using $0.8{\mu}m$ single poly CMOS ASIC technology. The filter has been designed for a 5th-order elliptic switched capacitor filter with cutoff frequency of 5khz, 0.1dB passband ripple. The filter consists of MOS swiches poly capacitors and five CMOS op-amps. For the realization of the SC filter, continuous time transfer function H(s) is obtained from LC passive type, and transfered as discrete time transfer H(z) through bilinear-z transform. Another filter has been designed by capacitor scaling for reduced chip area, considering dynamic range of the op-amp. The test results of two fabricated filters are cutoff frequency of 4.96~4.98khz, 35~38dB gain attenuation and 0.72~0.81dB passband ripple with the ${\pm}2.5V$power supply clock of 50KHz.

  • This paper presents a fine-grain supply-voltage-control scheme for low-power FPGAs. The proposed supply-voltage-control scheme detects the critical path in real time with small overheads by exploiting features of asynchronous architectures. In an FPGA based on the proposed supply-voltage-control scheme, logic blocks on the sub-critical path are autonomously switched to a lower supply voltage to reduce the power consumption without system performance degradation. Moreover, in order to reduce the overheads of level shifters used at the power domain interface, a look-up-table without level shifters is employed. Because of the small overheads of the proposed supply-voltage-control scheme and the power domain interface, the granularity size of the power domain in the proposed FPGA is as fine as a single four-input logic block. The proposed FPGA is fabricated using the e-Shuttle 65 nm CMOS process. Correct operation of the proposed FPGA on the test chip is confirmed.

  • Performance of the mobile devices, such as Smartphones, is sensible by the early-stage of the execution of the applications. To addressing this issue, the dynamic frequency scaling by the ondemand governor has an inherent weakness by the sampling period that may induces some delay in the execution time of the applications. In this paper, we propose an adaptive sampling method that varying the sampling period of the ondemand governor in accordance with the execution of the applications. By the experiment result, the proposed method outperforms 3.34% in early-stage of the execution time that impacts the sensible performance, and exhibits negligible differences in terms of the energy consumption.
