  • Wireless sensor networks are sensing, computing, and communication infrastructures that allow us to sense events in the harsh environment. The networks consist of many deployed sensor nodes. Each sensor node senses and transmits the sensed data to the administrator or base station of the networks. The sensor nodes are generally remotely-deployed, and therefore, software update must be done at run-time via communication channel. The software code update protocol should be energy-efficient to maximize lifetime of the sensor nodes. In this paper, we present a MCUP, which is a multi-level code update protocol for resource-constrained sensor nodes. MCUP enables energy-efficient code update by supporting multi-level code management. Our simulation results show that MCUP can reduce energy consumption compared with the existing one-level code update schemes.

  • One of the most important operations in nuclear power plants is load following, in which an imbalance of axial power distribution induces xenon oscillations. These oscillations must be maintained within acceptable limits otherwise the nuclear power plant could become unstable. Therefore, bounded xenon oscillation is considered to be a constraint for the load following operation. In this paper, the design of a sliding mode control (SMC), which is a robust nonlinear controller, is presented.SMCis ameansto control pressurized water nuclear reactor (PWR) power for the load following operation problem in a way that ensures xenon oscillations are kept bounded within acceptable limits. The proposed controller uses constant axial offset (AO) strategy to ensure xenon oscillations remain bounded. The constant AO is a robust state constraint for the load following problem. The reactor core is simulated based on the two-point nuclear reactor model with a three delayed neutron groups. The stability analysis is given by means of the Lyapunov approach, thus the control system is guaranteed to be stable within a large range. The employed method is easy to implement in practical applications and moreover, the SMC exhibits the desired dynamic properties during the entire output-tracking process independent of perturbations. Simulation results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed controller in terms of performance, robustness, and stability. Results show that the proposed controller for the load following operation is so effective that the xenon oscillations are kept bounded in the given region.

  • In this study, dynamic characteristics and liquefaction resistance characteristics of silica sand which is used to simulate sandy layer were conducted using the cyclic triaxial test according to the relative density difference. The difference in liquefaction resistance with the relative density was confirmed through the test results, which the relative density conditions were changed to 40%, 60%, and 80%, and the cyclic resistance ratio (CRR) curve of the silica sand was obtained. In addition, in order to examine the validity of the liquefaction resistance ratio (CRR) curve, artificial silica sand ground was created, and liquefaction potential was evaluated through the simple assessment method and the detailed assessment method, and the safety factors of each were compared.

  • The United States has been known as the world's major producer of crops such as wheat, corn, and soybeans. Therefore, using meteorological long-term forecast data to project reliable crop yields in the United States is important for planning domestic food policies. The current study is part of an effort to improve the seasonal predictability of regional-scale precipitation across the United States for estimating crop production in the country. For the purpose, a dynamic downscaling method using Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model is utilized. The WRF simulation covers the crop-growing period (March to October) during 2000-2020. The initial and lateral boundary conditions of WRF are derived from the Pusan National University Coupled General Circulation Model (PNU CGCM), a participant model of Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Climate Center (APCC) Long-Term Multi-Model Ensemble Prediction System. For bias correction of downscaled daily precipitation, empirical quantile mapping (EQM) is applied. The downscaled data set without and with correction are called WRF_UC and WRF_C, respectively. In terms of mean precipitation, the EQM effectively reduces the wet biases over most of the United States and improves the spatial correlation coefficient with observation. The daily precipitation of WRF_C shows the better performance in terms of frequency and extreme precipitation intensity compared to WRF_UC. In addition, WRF_C shows a more reasonable performance in predicting drought frequency according to intensity than WRF_UC.

  • We developed an adaptive optics test bench using an optical simulator and two rotating phase plates that mimicked the atmospheric turbulence at Bohyunsan Observatory. The observatory was reported to have a Fried parameter with a mean value of 85 mm and standard deviation of 13 mm, often expressed as 85 ± 13 mm. First, we fabricated several phase plates to generate realistic atmospheric-like turbulence. Then, we selected a pair from among the fabricated phase plates to emulate the atmospheric turbulence at the site. The result was 83 ± 11 mm. To address dynamic behavior, we emulated the atmospheric disturbance produced by a wind flow of 8.3 m/s by controlling the rotational speed of the phase plates. Finally, we investigated how closely the atmospheric disturbance simulation emulated reality with an investigation of the measurements on the optical table. The verification confirmed that the simulator showed a Fried parameter of 87 ± 15 mm as designed, but a little slower wind velocity (7.5 ± 2.5 m/s) than expected. This was because of the nonlinear motion of the phase plates. In conclusion, we successfully mimicked the atmospheric disturbance of Bohyunsan Observatory with an error of less than 10% in terms of Fried parameter and wind velocity.

  • The emissions trading system, introduced to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, experienced a sharp increase in emission allowance prices during the second plan period (2018-2020), which led to an increase in the demand for smooth supply and demand of emission allowances, while suppliers anticipating a shortage of emission allowances in the future did not participate in trading. Therefore, the authority temporarily revised the guidelines to ensure that the amount of allowances carried forward is proportional to the trading volume as a market stabilization measure. Through an optimization process using a dynamic nonlinear mathematical model, this paper analyzes the impact of the government's intervention on the carryover policy on GHG emission reductions and emission allowance market prices. According to the simulation analysis results, banking regulations could cause a decline in prices during the regulation period, even though the initial policy was predicted to be adopted.

  • In this study, a method for simplifying the structure of the VDES RF receiver, and the gain control method of the receiver to comply with the international standard in this structure was described. The input level of the wanted signal and unwanted signal to the receiver was defined, and when the two signals were input, the saturation state at the ADC was checked at the receiver output. As a result of the simulation by the circuit simulator, it was satisfied that the output power of the receiver was in the SFDR region of ADC with respect to the adjacent channel interference ratio, intermodulation, and blocking level. Through this study, it was found that the structure of th proposed RF receiver conforms to the international standard.

  • As technology advances, the need for enhanced preparedness against cyber-attacks becomes an increasingly critical problem. Therefore, it is imperative to consider various circumstances and to prepare for cyber-attack strategic technology. This paper proposes a method to solve network security problems by applying reinforcement learning to cyber-security. In general, traditional static cyber-security methods have difficulty effectively responding to modern dynamic attack patterns. To address this, we implement cyber-attack scenarios such as 'Tiny Alpha' and 'Small Alpha' and evaluate the performance of various reinforcement learning methods using Network Attack Simulator, which is a cyber-attack simulation environment based on the gymnasium (formerly Open AI gym) interface. In addition, we experimented with different RL algorithms such as value-based methods (Q-Learning, Deep-Q-Network, and Double Deep-Q-Network) and policy-based methods (Actor-Critic). As a result, we observed that value-based methods with discrete action spaces consistently outperformed policy-based methods with continuous action spaces, demonstrating a performance difference ranging from a minimum of 20.9% to a maximum of 53.2%. This result shows that the scheme not only suggests opportunities for enhancing cybersecurity strategies, but also indicates potential applications in cyber-security education and system validation across a large number of domains such as military, government, and corporate sectors.

  • Considering the Column-Supported Group Silos (CSGSs) often arranged by rows in practical applications, earthquake responses will be affected by group effect. Since group effect presenting uncertainties, establishing the analytic model and evaluating characteristics of CSGSs seems necessary. This study aimed at providing a simplified method to evaluate seismic performances of the CSGSs. Firstly, the CSGSs with different storage granule heights are used as numerical examples to derive the base shear formula for three-particle dynamic analytical model. Then, the base shear distribution coefficient is defined as the group effect index. The simplified calculation method of the group silos based on the distribution coefficients is proposed. Finally, based on the empty, half, and full granular storage conditions, the empirical design parameters for the group silos system are given by combining finite element simulation with shaking table test. The group effect of storage granule heights of group silos on its frequency and base shear are studied by comparative analysis between group silos and independent single silo. The results show that the frequency of CSGSs decreases with the increasing weight of the stored granule. The connection between the column top and silo bottom plate is vulnerable, and structural measures should be strengthened to improve its damage resistance. In case of different storage granule heights, distribution coefficients are effective to reconstruction the group effect. The complex calculations of seismic response for CSGSs can be avoided by adopting the empirical distribution coefficients obtained in this study. The proposed method provides a theoretical reference for evaluation on the seismic performances of the CSGSs.
