  • Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) is a Lagrangian computational fluid dynamics method that has been widely used in the analysis of physical phenomena characterized by large deformation or multi-phase flow analysis, including free surface. Despite the recent implementation of eddy-viscosity models in SPH methodology, sophisticated turbulent analysis using Lagrangian methodology has been limited due to the lack of computational performance and numerical consistency. In this study, we implement the standard and dynamic Smagorinsky model and dynamic Vreman model as sub-particle scale models based on a weakly compressible SPH solver. The large eddy simulation method is numerically identical to the spatial discretization method of smoothed particle dynamics, enabling the intuitive implementation of the turbulence model. Furthermore, there is no additional filtering process required for physical variables since the sub-grid scale filtering is inherently processed in the kernel interpolation. We simulate lid-driven flow under transition and turbulent conditions as a benchmark. The simulation results show that the dynamic Vreman model produces consistent results with experimental and numerical research regarding Reynolds averaged physical quantities and flow structure. Spectral analysis also confirms that it is possible to analyze turbulent eddies with a smaller length scale using the dynamic Vreman model with the same particle size.

  • Electric Power Steering (EPS) mechanism has become widely equipped in passenger vehicle due to the environmental consciousness and higher fuel efficiency. This paper describes the development of co-simulation technique and simulation integration technique of EPS control system with dynamic vehicle model. A full vehicle model interacted with EPS control algorithm is concurrently simulated on a single bump road condition. Dynamic responses of vehicle chassis and steering system resulting from road surface impact are evaluated and compared with proving ground experimental data. The comparisons will show reasonable agreement on tie-rod load. rack displacement, handle-wheel torque and tire center acceleration. This developed simulation capability can be used for EPS performance evaluation and calibration as well as for vehicle handling performance integration and synthesis.

  • An envelope protection system is a control system that allows a submarine to operate freely using its own operational envelope without exceeding the structural limit, dynamic limit, and control input limit. In this paper, an envelope protection system for the pitch angle of a submarine is designed using a dynamic trim algorithm. A linear quadratic regulator and artificial neural network are used for the true dynamics approximation. A submarine maneuvering simulation program developed using experimental data is used to validate the designed envelope protection system. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the designed envelope protection system.

  • One of the issues in extending the range of applicable problems of real-time hybrid simulation is the computation speed of the simulator when large-scale computational models with a large number of DOF are used. In this study, functionality of real-time dynamic simulation of MDOF systems is achieved by creating a logic circuit that performs the step-by-step numerical time integration of the equations of motion of the system. The designed logic circuit can be implemented to an FPGA-based system; FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) allows large-scale parallel computing by implementing a number of arithmetic operators within the device. The operator splitting method is used as the numerical time integration scheme. The logic circuit consists of blocks of circuits that perform numerical arithmetic operations that appear in the integration scheme, including addition and multiplication of floating-point numbers, registers to store the intermediate data, and data busses connecting these elements to transmit various information including the floating-point numerical data among them. Case study on several types of linear and nonlinear MDOF system models shows that use of resource sharing in logic synthesis is crucial for effective application of FPGA to real-time dynamic simulation of structural response with time step interval of 1 ms.

  • This paper presents the dynamic instability analysis of un-damped elastically supported piezoelectric functionally graded (FG) beams subjected to in-plane static and dynamic periodic thermomechanical loadings with uncertain system properties. The elastic foundation model is assumed as one parameter Pasternak foundation with Winkler cubic nonlinearity. The piezoelectric FG beam is subjected to non-uniform temperature distribution with temperature dependent material properties. The Young's modulus and Poison's ratio of ceramic, metal and piezoelectric, density of respective ceramic and metal, volume fraction exponent and foundation parameters are taken as uncertain system properties. The basic nonlinear formulation of the beam is based on higher order shear deformation theory (HSDT) with von-Karman strain kinematics. The governing deterministic static and dynamic random instability equation and regions is solved by Bolotin's approach with Newmark's time integration method combined with first order perturbation technique (FOPT). Typical numerical results in terms of the mean and standard deviation of dynamic instability analysis are presented to examine the effect of slenderness ratios, volume fraction exponents, foundation parameters, amplitude ratios, temperature increments and position of piezoelectric layers by changing the random system properties. The correctness of the present stochastic model is examined by comparing the results with direct Monte Caro simulation (MCS).

  • Computer simulation studies are a useful means to investigate the safety and performance of a high-speed magnetically levitated vehicle negotiating an elevated guideway. In this paper the dynamic interaction between moving vehicles and a span continuous guideway was discussed and with the consideration of the magnetic levitation system, the maglev levitation system and guideway dynamic interaction model was developed. Numerical simulation was performed to understand dynamic characteristics of the guideway used in practice. The result show that vehicle speed, span length and primary frequency of the guideway have an important influence on the dynamic responses of the guideway.

  • This paper presents a two-wheel balancing mobile robot with linear workspace extension structures. The two-wheel mobile robot has two linear motions at the waist and shoulder to have extended workspace. The linear motion of the waist and shoulder provides some structural advantages. A dynamic equation of the simplified robot system is derived. Simulation studies of the position control of the robot system are performed based on the dynamic equations. The dynamic relationship between a two-wheel mobile system and linear extension mechanism is observed by simulation studies.

  • This paper presents the dynamic analysis method for an electromechanical system. The engineer has at his disposal a variety of software simulation tools. However, difficulties arise when the study of the behavior of complex electromechanical systems in combination with coupling element is required. Typical examples of such systems are machines for factory automation, home automation, and office automation. Dynamic systems analysis packages or electronic systems analysis packages offer the restrictive to simulate these mixed systems such electromechanical product. Electronic circuit analysis algorithm is easily incorporated into a multi-body dynamics analysis algorithm. The governing equation of electronic circuit is formulated as a differential algebraic equation form including both electrical and mechanical variables and is simultaneously solved in every time step. This analysis method clearly demonstrates the application potential for mixed electromechanical simulation.

  • This paper presents the dynamic analysis and experiment for rotor systems supported by angular contact ball bearings subjected to axial displacement preload. A dynamic software, which has been developed by the authors for the analysis of rotor systems supported by angular contact ball bearings, is used to simulate a uniform shaft system supported by two angular contact ball bearings with the axial displacement preload varied. Experiments are also performed to validate the simulation. An experimental system is constructed which consists of a uniform shaft, two bearings and a device for adjusting the axial displacement preload. Through a series of simulation and experiment, the dynamic characteristics of rotor systems with angular contact ball bearings subject to axial displacement preload are investigated.
