Concrete filled steel tubular (CFST) column joints with composite beams have been widely used as lateral loading resisting elements in civil infrastructure. To better utilize these innovative joints for the application of structural seismic design and analysis, it is of great importance to investigate the dynamic behavior of the joint under cyclic loading. With this aim in mind, a novel phenomenal model has been put forward in this paper, in which a Bouc-Wen hysteresis component is employed to portray the strength and stiffness deterioration phenomenon caused by increment of loading cycle. Then, a modified chicken swarm optimization algorithm was used to estimate the optimal model parameters via solving a global minimum optimization problem. Finally, the experimental data tested from five specimens subjected to cyclic loadings were used to validate the performance of the proposed model. The results effectively demonstrate that the proposed model is an easy and more realistic tool that can be used for the pre-design of CFST column joints with reduced beam section (RBS) composite beams.

Structural optimization design has been developed with finite element analysis using effective and fast computational technology. Especially topology optimization design has been recently often used since it yields an optimal topology as well as an optimal shape under satisfied constraints. In general in finite element analysis, it is assumed that the structural material properties such as Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio and the variable of applied loading are fixed with obvious values in structure. However practically these values may take uncertainties because of environmental effect or manufactural error of structures. Therefore static or dynamic analysis of the structures may make an error, then finally it may have an influence on qualify of optimal design. In this study, the topology optimization design of structure is carried out using so called the interval finite element method, and the analysis method Is proposed. The results are also validated by comparing with conventional topology optimization results of density distribution method and finite element analysis results. The present method can be used to predict the optimal topology of linear elastostatic structures with respect to structural uncertainty of behavior.

In the present study, the long-pitch roller-chain of a continuous ship unloader is studied. It is the vertical excavating and transporting the cargo has carried in bulk amount. The size of the pitch in the long-pitch roller chain is about 350 mm. The finite element technique is used for the structural safety of the roller chain. The objective of the study is to perform a dynamic analysis of the load at the point of contact with the sprocket of the roller chain, and analyze each point in the stress of the chain's components by using load. From the tooth sprocket optimization analysis, the results show an optimal design. Static structural analysis was safe. Contact analysis results show the greatest stress on the sprocket. By increasing the tooth size, the stress was reduced.
A risk assessment framework for evaluating building structures is implemented in this study. This framework allows considering sources of uncertainty both on structural capacity and seismic demand. In particular randomness on seismic load, incident angle, material properties, floor mass and structural damping are considered; in addition the choice of fibre modelling versus plastic hinge model is also considered as a source of uncertainty. The main objective of this work is to study the contribution of these sources of uncertainty on the fragilities of steel and steel-reinforced concrete composite 3D building structures. The fragility curves are expressed in the form of a two-parameter lognormal distribution where vertical statistics in conjunction with metaheuristic optimization are implemented for calculating the two parameters.

Substructures position is considered as design parameter to obtain optimal structural changes to raise its dynamic characteristics. In conventional SDM (structural dynamics modification) method, the layout of modifying substructures position is first fixed and at that condition the structural optimization is performed by using the substructures size and/or material property as design parameters. But in this paper as a design variable substructures global translational and rotational position is treated. (omitted)

Structural Dynamics Modification is very effective technique to improve structure's dynamic characteristics by adding or removing auxiliary structures, changing material property, changing shape of structure. In this research, using the surface grooving technique, shape of base structure was changed to improve its first natural frequency. Utilizing the result of sensitivity analysis, groove shape was formed gathering the many small embossing elements. For this process, Sensitivity Criterion Factor was introduced. To reduce its amount of calculation, the range of target area was restricted to their neighboring area and that result was very successful.

This study investigated a bio-tensegrity structural system that combines the characteristics of a general tensegrity structural system with a biological system. The final research objective is to accomplish a changeability for the structural system as like the movement of the natural bio-system. In the study, we present a shape finding procedure for the two stage bio-tensegrity system model inspired by the movement pattern of animal backbone. The proposed system is allowing a dynamic movement by introducing the concept of "saddle" for the variable bio-tensegrity structure. Several shape finding analysis example and results are presented and shows a efficient validation and suitability.

In this research multiple change-points estimation for South Korean electricity generation data is considered. We analyze the South Korean electricity data via deterministically trending dynamic time series model with multiple structural changes in trends in a Bayesian approach. The number of change-points and the timing are unknown. The goal is to find the best model with the appropriate number of change-points and the length of the segments. A genetic algorithm is implemented to solve this optimization problem with a variable dimension of parameters. We estimate the structural change-points for South Korean electricity generation data and Nile River flow data additionally.
The focus of this paper is on the development and implementation of a methodology for automated design of discrete structural systems. The research is aimed at utilizing Genetic Algorithms (GA) as an automated design tool. Several key enhancements are made to the simple GA in order to increase the efficiency, reliability and accuracy of the methodology for code-based design of structures. The AISC-ASD design code is used to illustrate the design methodology. Small as well as large-scale problems are solved. Simultaneous sizing, shape and topology optimal designs of structural framed systems subjected to static and dynamic loads are considered. Comparisons with results from prior publications and solution to new problems show that the enhancements made to the GA do indeed make the design system more efficient and robust.
Optimization in distribution of stay cable forces is one of the most difficult aspects in the design of cable-stayed bridges. This article attempts to examine tension force influence on structural behavior of cable-stayed bridges. For the examination, finite element modeling using nonlinear static and nonlinear modal analyses was completed and compared to structural experimental results. Variables analyzed in this parametric study were: 1) Number of stay cables; 2) Tension of the stay cables, and 3) Stay cable pattern - harp and semi-fan patterns. Though the findings from the analysis are limited to the tested models, the study gives insight on the structural behavior of actual cable stayed bridges.
