  • The anatomical characteristics of the ten Indonesian wood species (Gmelina, Jeunjing, Mangium, Durian, Gandaria, Jengkol, Kupa, Mangga, Nanaka and Rambutan) were investigated by optical microscopy. All the species were diffuse-porous with solitary and radial pore multiple. In Mangium, however, tangential pore multiple was observed as well. Tangential diameter of pore was larger than that of radial one except for Jeunjing and Nangka. Nangka showed the largest tangential diameter of pore among the species. Vessel number per $mm^2$ of Mangium, Gandaria and Kupa was higher than that of the other species. Especially Kupa showed highest vessel number. The tangential width of axial parenchyma cell in Gmelina, Mangium, Kupa and Mangga was larger than that of wood fiber, while the other species showed the opposite trend. Mangium was the largest in tangential width of axial parenchyma cell. Rays were homocellular composed only of procumbent cell in Gmelina, Jeunjing and Rambutan. Heterocellular rays composed of procumbent cells in the body and one row of upright and/or square in the margin are observed in Gandaria. Mangium, Durian, Jengkol, Kupa, Mangga and Nangkabody showed heterocellular rays composed of procumbent cells in the body and mostly 1~2 rows of upright and/or square cells in the margin. Crystals occurred in Durian, Gandaria, Jengkol, Jeunjing, Mangga and Rambutan and silica in Jeunjing and Mangga.

  • Root and stem rot caused by Phytophthora palmivora is one of the most serious diseases affecting durian production in Thailand where metalaxyl, an effective fungicide against oomycetes, has been used extensively for a long period to control this disease. Although field isolates of P. palmivora resistant to metalaxyl exist in Thailand, a molecular basis for P. palmivora has not yet been elucidated regarding metalaxyl resistance. The current study tested whether P. palmivora RPA1 (the DNA-directed RNA polymerase I subunit gene), a homolog gene of RPA190 associated with metalaxyl resistance in some isolates of Phytophthora infestans, had a role in the resistance mechanism toward metalaxyl. In total, 40 durian-derived isolates of P. palmivora were assessed for metalaxyl sensitivity using a mycelial growth inhibition assay. The effective concentrations for 50% mycelial growth inhibition values for all isolates tested were in the range 0.01-872.88 mg/L. The isolates were clustered into three groups: sensitive (n=23), moderately resistant (n=11), and resistant (n=6) groups. No polymorphism was revealed based on multiple alignment analysis of the amino acid sequences translated from the corresponding DNA sequences in the region of RPA1 of the metalaxyl-sensitive (n=5), moderately resistant (n=2), and resistant isolates (n=6). Furthermore, investigation of the RPA1 expression among these representative isolates (n=3, each group) indicated that RPA1 expression may not be involved in the regulation of P. palmivora resistance to metalaxyl. Based on this line of evidence, there was no detected relationship regarding metalaxyl resistance and P. palmivora RPA1.

  • Chemical characterization of vinegars obtained from Durian wood (Durio sp.) and their termicidal activity against Coptotermes curvignathus and antifungal activity against Schizophyllum commune were evaluated. The process of pyrolysis produced wood vinegars at three distinct temperature: 350℃, 400℃, and 450℃. To determine their effectiveness against fungal growth, the vinegars were tested using a Petri dish with 1.0%, 2.0%, 3.0%, and 4.0% (v/v) against S. commune. In the experiment, termicidal activities were evaluated using a no-choice test for C. curvignathus with 3.0%, 6.0%, 9.0%, and 12.0% (v/v). The wood vinegar exhibited antitermitic activity to C. curvignathus workers in the no-choice experiment; For vinegar produced at 450℃, a 6% concentration was required to achieve 100% mortality against C. curvignathus. In addition, a 12% vinegar produced at 450℃ resulted in the lowest mass loss of treated filter paper, which was 20.00%. Furthermore, all the wood vinegars exhibited antifungal activities against S. commune at concentration of 2.0%. The dominant chemical components of wood vinegar produced at temperature of 350℃, 400℃, and 450℃ were 2-methoxy-phenol, 4-ethyl-2-methoxy-phenol, 4-ethyl-2-methoxy-phenol, 3.5-dimethoxy-4-hydroxytoluene, and creosol.

  • This paper aims to investigate the potential use of cempedak durian peel (CDP) from Negara Brunei Darussalam, which is low-cost, locally available, eco-friendly and highly efficient to remove methyl violet (MV) dye from aqueous solutions. The time required for equilibrium to be reached is 2.0 h with no adjustment of pH necessary. FTIR analysis was indicative of the involvement of -COOH and C=O functional groups in adsorption process. The Langmuir model provided the best fit with maximum adsorption capacity of $0.606mmol\;g^{-1}$. Thermodynamics data indicate that the adsorption is spontaneous, feasible and endothermic in nature. Best regeneration of CDP's adsorption ability is achieved by base solution, showing about 95% removal efficiency of MV even after 5 cycles, indicating that CDP can be regenerated and reused. This, together with its high adsorption capacity, makes CDP a potential adsorbent for the removal of MV in wastewater.

  • Recently, the unusual climate change is happening from the global warming in the whole world, the Korean peninsula is also no exception. It is predicted by many researchers that, in the near future, the Super-Typhoon of overwhelming power will occur due to rising temperatures on the sea surface around the Korean peninsula. In this study, numerical simulation has been performed with the Super-Typhoons which combined route of Typhoon Maemi with typhoon conditons of Hurricane Katrina (New Oleans in U.S.A, 2005), Typhoon Durian (philippine, 2006) and Typhoon Vera (Ise Bay in Japan, 1959) at Busan and Gyeongnam coastal area which has been badly damaged due to storm surge every year. From the numerical results, it is revealed that the storm surge heights of the Super-Typhoons are higher than that of Maemi, specially the storm surge height in the case of Katrina is about 4 times larger. So, it can be pointed out that the construction of countermeasures against disasters are very important in order to prepare against an attack of the Super-Typhoons.

  • As the power and scale of typhoons are growing due to global warming and socioeconomic damages induced by super-typhoons are increasing, it is important to estimate inundation damages and to prepare proper adaptation plans against an attack of the super-typhoon. In this paper, we estimated the inundation damages of urban area around Haeundae beach induced by super-typhoons which follow the route of Typhoon Maemi with the conditions of Typhoon Vera (Ise Bay in Japan, 1959), Typhoon Durian (Philippine, 2006) and Hurricane Katrina (New Oleans in U.S.A, 2005). The coastal area around the Haeundae beach (Busan and Gyeongnam province) is expectedly damaged by severe storm surges. In this study we calculated the rise of sea level height after harmonizing the different datum levels of land and ocean and estimated the inundation depth, inundation area and the amount of building damages by using airborne LiDAR data and GIS spatial analysis techniques more accurately and quantitatively. As many researchers are predicting that super-typhoon of overwhelming power will occur around the Korean peninsula in the near future, the results of this study are expected to contribute to producing coastal inundation map and evacuation planning.
