Rectal temperature, skin temperature and oxygen consumption were measured in five women divers during diving under two conditions a) wearing a cotton bathing suit and b) wearing a diving suit and the following results were obtained. 1. The duration of the diving period was 30 min with the cotton bathing suit whereas it was above 120 min with the diving suit. 2. The average rectal temperature fell to $34.5^{\circ}C$ after 30 min of diving with the cotton bathing suit. On the other hand, with the diving suit, immediately after submersion, the rectal temperature rose about $3^{\circ}C$ and remained at about $39^{\circ}C$ throughout the diving period of 120 min. 3. Average mean skin temperature during diving was $11^{\circ}C$ and $21^{\circ}C$ with cotton bathing suit and with the diving suit, respectively. The mean body temperature fell to $25^{\circ}C$ with the cotton bathing suit while it reached $32^{\circ}C$ with the diving suit at the end of each diving period. 4. Oxygen consumption during diving was three fold of the pre-dive level with the cotton bathing suit but it was two fold with the diving suit. 5. Total extra heat loss was 323 kcal during 120 min of diving with the diving suit. On the contrary, with the cotton bathing suit, it was 528 kcal for 30 min, These results may suggest that the prolongation of the diving period with the diving suit is primarily due to maintenance of core temperature at more or less physiological level as a result of reduction in conductive heat loss from the body surface to the water and the Preferential distribution of blood in the core area.

This study tried to evaluate the safety and economical benefit of Nitrox-diving by comparing with Air diving. We used actual diving data which was recorded in construction site of the Busan-Geoje fixed link immersed tunnel in 2010. The study method was to assort and analyze the diving data by divers, depth, breathing air, and diving table. Furthermore, the study examined the possibility of outbreak decompression sickness by comparing Nitrox diving and Air diving in no-decompression limit time, decompression time, working time. As a result, this study confirms that if certain diver breathe Nitrox for diving and oxygen for decompression, not only the risk of decompression sickness could be minimized, but also duration of decompression could be shortened. Moreover, it was estimated that a remarkable difference(more than 3 times) between actual duration of underwater construction period and virtual construction period by using air. As a result, the study confirmed that Nitrox diving is more efficient and economical than Air diving in physically limited and hazardous diving environment.

This study aimed to suggest education direction for diving safety through investigating actual condition to diving safety before and during scuba diving. The study subjects were 227 scuba divers. Data were collected from September 21, 2012 to August 16, 2013. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 21.0. The results were as follows. Many higher level divers didn't obey regulations: 'alcohol drinking', 'warming-up exercise', 'to dive even when he/she suffers from respiratory disease' before scuba diving. Many lower level divers didn't obey regulations: 'to stop diving under abnormal physical condition', 'to do safety stop during ascending time', 'to check during ascending time', 'to know ascending and descending speed per minute', 'to use an alpha flag or buoy' during scuba diving. In conclusion, it is necessary to implement a discriminative safety education and to check actual condition to diving safety periodically in consideration of duration and level of diving.

This paper reviewed the diving standards for underwater work in hostile environment and analyzed applied Navy diving technique, diving equipments and procedure for rescue operation of Navy ship Cheonan's missing crew occurred near Bak Ryung Do in March 2010. The operation was done beyond the international standards and safety practice, and by considering the nature of the mission, urgency and effectiveness as well as the detailed facts such as duration and depth of the dive, type of work to be performed, environmental conditions, time constraints of early rescue operation, it is analyzed that using air scuba diving system was adequate.
Diving related disease including decompression sickness is an important occupational health problem and diving fishermen remain a fairly hazardous occupation in Korea. To prevent diving related disease, we investigate diving patterns, incidence of diving related diseases, and contributing factors of 433 diving fishermen of three coast interviewing and mailing questionnaire in 1996. Mean age of divers was 39.7 years, ranged from 24 to 58 years, 92.8% of these were male, and 58.4% of divers were high school graduates. Mean duration of work as a diver was 12.9 years, ranged from 2 to 40 years. It was found that 70.4% of divers were using hookah system, 22.2% of helmet, and only 2.5% SCUBA. About half of them have learned diving skills from other divers. The peak season of diving was from April to June and mean working days were 20.3 days per month during the peak season. On the average, the divers dived 5-6 times, ranged from 1 to 10 times a day with 51.1 minutes of diving time, ranged from 20 to 120 minutes, at 30 m or 40 m in depth, and 35.5 minute of interval on surface. Most divers ascended slowly making decompression stop, yet the decompression profile used was not based on any scientific knowledge except for their own experiences. It appeared that each diving system had slightly different diving patterns. There were 282(65.0%) divers that suffered from DCS in 1995 and 31.2% of divers were given recompression therapy at a medical facility since they worked as diving fishermen. Skin and musculoskeletal complaints were common symptoms of DCS and 39% of divers experienced a voiding difficulty. In univariate analysis, females have an increased frequency of DCS(93% vs 66% for males). Old age, long duration of work, helmet diving, diving time, diving depth, repetitive diving, and blow up were all contributing factors to DCS. It was found that most diving patterns exceed no decompression limit and did not use the standard decompression table. This suggests that most of divers are at high risk of developing diving related disease with prolonged dives and lengthy repetitive diving in deep depth. Considering the diving patterns and economic aspect of professional diving, the incidence of DCS among diving fishermen in Korea will not decrease in the near future. These findings suggest that periodical health surveillance for divers, and education of health and safety are important for reducing the risk of diving related disease in the population of diving fishermen.

The aim of this study is to develop indoor-rearing methods of the diving beetles. In nature, both the adult diving beetle and its larvae are voracious aquatic predators. The larvae beetles hunt relatively bigger size of tadpoles and small fish for food source. However, due to difficulties of the food supplement for rearing diving beetles at indoor-condition further motivated us to develop new artificial food. Three separate experiments were performed. In the first experiment, adult beetles were provided with one of the several food choice treatments to self-compose their preferred foods that are affordable on the market at lower price. The second experiment was also to develop artificial diet that is possible for rearing larvae beetle under indoor condition. The larvae beetles were restricted to raw squid, artificial food source and mosquito larvae as a control at the first stadium and small fish and raw squid during second to third stadium duration. According to our result, adult beetles selected a food that made of boiled squid and dead small fish while, the young larvae consumed small fish, mosquito larvae and raw squid. Although, the larval food restriction on law squid caused noticeable decrease in survival, the result still supported the possible survival rate of keeping larvae at indoor condition. Moreover, pupation rate experiments, in which groups of larvae were placed at different mats, natural soil and fermented sawdust, showed that 80% of diving beetles pupated on the sawdust. This result indicates that female beetle preferentially selected to oviposit along soft and moist area.
A 40-year-old man was admitted with chief complaints of sudden hearing loss, ear fullness and tinnitus of 12 days duration developed following SCUBA diving. An exploratory tympanotomy was done on 16th day of onset, and a small leakage of clear fluid was found on the anterior portion of the stapediovestibular joint, which was sealed off by small piece of fatty tissue from the ear lobe. Postoperatively, his PTA's was improved from 85㏈ to 15㏈, however high tone was remained unchanged above 4KHz. More exploration of the middle ear will be helpful to find the labyrinthine fistula causing sudden type of hearing loss.

By using the offshore type submersible platform, Artificial sea floor anchored at a depth of forty meters several experimental studies have been conducted successfully during 1996. The facility consists of an artificial sea floor that floats at 7 meters below the surface, a machinery hut that projects above the surface at the center of the structure and a balance weight beneath the structure. The facility can be surfaced easily by using a water discharging pump in the water tank which is located at the center of it. To find out the behavioral character and the gathering factor of fishes around the artificial sea floor, investigations were carried out during the daytime and nighttime by direct observation and by echo-sounder. Around the testing reefs and artificial sea floor, six kinds of fishes were found by diving observation and the dominants were Scomber japonicus, Sebastes thompsoni and Oplegnathus fascitus. As Scomber japonicus was distributed around the artificial sea floor in dense small school, they were not seen elsewhere in the survey area. The artificial sea floor was concluded to act as a schooling ground far Scomber japonicus, Sebastes thompsoni and Oplegnathus fascitus. were close to the testing reefs(within 10m) in the daytime, and were thought to settle on the testing reefs at nighttime, To examine the distribution of 7shes around the artificial sea floor, an acoustic survey over a 1$\times$1km area, 0-50m in depth during the all day. Around the artificial sea floor many thin scattering fish echo(TS-54.5~ -51.5dB) and dense fish echo(TS-41~-38dB) were mainly distributed. Many scattering fish echoes, which were thought to be a mixture of small squid, pelegic crustacea and ethers, were distributed over the whole survey area. A dense fish school stayed beneath the artificial sea floor for a short duration. These phenomena were concluded to show an attraction and detention function of the artificial sea floor.
