In the last few years, ductile fracture criteria based on various hypotheses have been developed and utilized with FEM to predict forming failure. The accurate deformation analysis by the FEM and the decision of damage parameters are the most important factors in these approaches. In this paper, several conventional integral forms of fracture criteria were introduced and the test method to determine damage parameters by using notched specimen was suggested. Based on the results, damage parameters obtained under the different stress system (tensile and compression) are compared and analyzed.
This research is undertaken to the flexural strength, failure mode and ductile capacity of one way concrete slabs, with without splices, reinforcement with Wire-Fabric. Test results are as fallows : (1) Crack of the simple slabs is occured at a position of transerve wire and sntirely crack interval of the fixed slabs is taken place about 20cm, (2)Maximum load of slab with splices has showed almost similar to that of slab without splices, but ductile capacity increased according to rising of splices, (3) Ductile capacity of slab with Deformed Bar is higher 1.44 times than that of slab with Wire-Fabric, and it is higher 3.74 times than that of slab with Loop-wire fabric, but that of specimens of using Wire-Fabric is average 4.6.
In order to overcome the brittle failure of strengthening with FRP-rebars inherent to their brittle properties, two approaches have been attempted. One is to improve the properties like ductile Hybrid FRP Rods, and the other is to develop a ductile strengthening with partially unbonded FRP rebars. Experiments on real size specimen were performed to evaluate the performance of NSM (Near Surface Mounted Strengthening) and SIM (Section Increment Methods) with FRP rebars. This paper discusses the results of the tests on 8 slab specimen in terms of flexural resistance, ductility, and fatigue. They show that NSM or S1M with FRP rebars are very effective measures to strengthen existing RC structures. Above all, strengthening with partially unbonded ductile Hybrid FRP Rods shows sufficient ductility similar to that of properly designed RC structures.
The limit drawing ratio (LDR) is a major process parameter in the process design of deep drawing. If the actual drawing ratio is greater than the LDR for a particular stage then an intermediate stage has to b added the process sequence to avoid failure during the drawing operation and the optimal process design considering for the first-drawing and redrawing by using finite element method combined with ductile fracture criterion. From the results of finrte element analysis the optimal value of drawing ratio is obtained which contributes to the more uniform distribution of thickess and the smaller values of the ductile fracture infinal cup.
By using the finite element method, the Oyane's ductile fracture integral I was calculated from the histories of stress and strain according to every element and then the forming limit of hydroforming process could be evaluated. The fracture initiation site and the forming limit fer two typical hydroforming processes, tee extrusion and bumper rail under different forming conditions are predicted in this study. For tee extrusion hydroforming process, the pressure level has significant influence on the forming limit. When the expansion area is backed by a supporter and bulged, the process would be more stable and the possibility of bursting failure is reduced. For bumper rail, the ductile fracture integral I is not only affected by the process parameters, but also by the shape of preforming blank. Due to no axial feeding on the end side of the blank, the possibility of cracking in hydroforming of the bumper rail is influenced by the friction condition more strongly than that of the tee extrusion. All the simulation results show reasonable plastic deformation, and the applications of the method could be extended to a wide range of hydroforming processes.
In this paper, a finite element analysis based on the local approach concept to fracture in the continuum damage mechanics is performed to analyze ductile fracture in two dimensional quasi-static state. First an isotropic damage model based on the generalized concept of effective stress is proposed for structural materials in the context of large deformation. In this model, the stiffness degradation is taken as a measure of damage and so, the fracture phenomenon can be explained as the critical deterioration of stiffness at a material point. The modified Riks' continuation technique is used to solve incremental iterative equations. Crack propagation is achieved by removing critically damaged elements. The mesh size sensitivity analysis and the simulation of the well known shearing mode failure in plane strain state are carried out to verify the present formulation. As numerical examples, an edge cracked plate and the specimen with a circular hole under plane stress are taken. Load-displacement curves and successively fractured shapes are shown. From the results, it can be concluded that the proposed model based on the local approach concept in the continuum damage mechanics may be stated as a reasonable tool to explain ductile fracture initiation and crack propagation.
The loading capacity of engineering structures/components reduces after the initiation and propagation of crack eventually leads to the final failure. Hence, it becomes essential to deal with the crack and its effects at the design and simulation stages itself, by detecting the prone area of the fracture. The phase-field (PF) method has been accepted widely in simulating fracture problems in complex geometries. However, most of the PF methods are formulated with second order continuity theoryinvolving C0 continuity. In the present study, PF method based on fourth-order (i.e., higher order) theory, maintaining C1 continuity has been proposed for ductile fracture simulation. The formulation includes fourth-order derivative terms of phase field variable, varying between 0 and 1. Applications of fourth-order PF theory to ductile fracture simulation resulted in novelty in this area. The proposed formulation is numerically solved using a two-dimensional finite element (FE) framework in 3-layered manner system. The solutions thus obtained from the proposed fourth order theory for different benchmark problems portray the improvement in the accuracy of the numerical results and are well matched with experimental results available in the literature. These results are also compared with second-order PF theory and a comparison study demonstrated the robustness of the proposed model in capturing ductile behaviour close to experimental observations.

This research investigates the hysteretic behavior of composite beams with web opening near the beam end. The objective of this research is to intend a ductile failure around the web opening subjected to cyclic loading prior to the potential brittle failure at the beam-to-colum connection. Experimental tests of two specimens having different location of opening were conducted resulting in better performance of strength and ductility at the specimen of middle opening compared with that of upper opening. Also, comparisons of experimental and theoretical results were carried out.
