Unrecorded fern species from Korean flora : Ctenitis maximowicziana, Dryopteris lunanensis and D. decipiens var. diplazioides (Dryopteridaceae) (한국산 미기록 양치식물 : 흰비늘고사리, 남도톱지네고사리, 애기지네고사리 (관중과))

  • Three unrecorded fern species from the flora of Korea belonging to family Dryopteridaceae, Ctenitis maximowicziana, Dryopteris lunanensis, and D. dcipiens var. diplazioides, are found along the valley of Mt. Wolgak (alt. 275m) in Gwangju, Korea. C. maximawicziana is well distinguished from the rest of the species in the genus including C. sinii by the color and morphology of scales in basal part of petioles, shape of blades, and the presence of round-reniform shaped indusia. Dryopteris lunanensis is also well distinguished from its close relative, D. atrata, by the number of lateral pinnae, degree of division of first and/or second pinnules in lower pinnae of the blades, and distribution pattern of sori. Dryapteris decipiens var. diplazioides is distinguishable from type variety by degree of division in lower pinnae of the blades. In terms of morphology, var. diplazioides seems to be intermediate between a type variety and D. fuscipes.

  • Unrecorded fern species of Korean flora, Thelypteris interrupta (Willd.) K. Iwats. (Thelypteridaceae) and Dryopteris subexaltata (H. Christ) C. Chr. (Dryopteridaceae), were collected from Jeju island off the south coast of Korean peninsula and reported here. T. interrupta is most similar to T. acuminata (Houtt.) C. V. Morton in morphology, however, the two species are readily distinguishable by the plant color including rhizome, stipe base and spore, and the presence of glandular hair as well as the distribution pattern of sorus on lower leaf surface. D. subexaltata is also well distinguishable from its relatives, D. sparsa (D. Don) Kuntze, D. sabaei (Franch. & Sav.) C. Chr., and D. yakusilvicola Sa. Kurata by the presence of proliferation, shape of pinnae, distribution pattern of sori on lower leaf surface, and shape of indusium.

First record of Cyrtomium laetevirens and Dryopteris simasakii var. paleacea (Dryopteridaceae) from Korea (한반도 미기록 층층지네고사리와 윤쇠고비(관중과))

  • Two newly recorded species, Cyrtomium laetevirens and Dryopteris simasakii var. paleacea (Dryopteridaceae) were collected from forests in Jeonnam, Geongnam and Jeju-do, with the latter also, found addedly in Gwanaksan, Seoul. C. laetevirens (vernacular name: 'Yun-soe-go-bi) was distinguished from other Korean congeners of the genus Cyrtomium by having glossy laminae, narrow lanceolate, yellow-green pinnae with minutely serrated margin and gradually narrowing shape from base to apex, along with entire, unicolor, and white grayish indusia. D. simasakii var. paleacea (vernacular name: Cheung-cheung-ji-ne-go-sa-ri'), was distinguished by shining leaves, opposite pinnae arrangement, no falcate pinnules, and densely adpressed scaly wholly along with irregular dark brown scales on stipe and rachis. Descriptions and illustrations of the two taxa and their photographs in the habitat are provided along with a key to the species of Cyrtomium and sect. Hirpedes of Dryopteris from Korea.

New records of ferns in the flora of Myanmar found in Natma Taung National Park in the Chin State (미얀마 친주 나트마타웅 국립공원내 미얀마 미기록 양치류)

  • Field work conducted in Natma Taung National Park, Chin State, Myanmar, in 2015 to make a checklist of lycophytes and ferns resulted in the discovery of four fern species not previously recorded in the flora of Myanmar. All occur in other countries in southeastern Asia, and in other tropical areas. The species are as follows: Adiantum monochlamys (Adiantaceae), Ctenitis decurrentipinnata (Dryopteridaceae), Pteris tripartita, and Paragymnopteris vestita (Pteridaceae). These findings will enable us to update the checklist of ferns of Myanmar.

  • Fieldwork in Lao PDR during 2007-2008 resulted in the discovery of 15 unrecorded fern species among the flora of Lao PDR. All have been identified in other countries in southeastern Asia, as well as from other tropical areas. The species are as follows: Asplenicaceae (Asplenium delavayi, A. rockier), Athyriaceae (Anisocampium cuspidatum), Dennstaedtiaceae (Microlepia hookeriana, Pteridium revolutum), Dryopteridaceae (Didymochlaena truncatula, Dryopteris cochleata, Polystichum biaristatum, P. lindsaefolium), Gleicheniaceae (Dicranopteris curranii), Hypodematiaceae (Hypodematium crenatum), Lindsaeaceae (Lindsaea heterophylla), Pteridaceae (Pteris decrescens), Polypodiaceae (Pyrrosia nummularifolia) and Thelypteridaceae (Cyclosorus dentatus).

α-Glucosidase Inhibition Activity of Methanol Extracts and Fractions Obtained from Three Dryopteridaceae Species (면마과 3종 메탄올 추출물 및 분획물의 α-Glucosidase 억제 활성)

  • This study was performed to select adequate plant materials for developing a natural ${\alpha}$-glucosidase inhibitor by analyzing ${\alpha}$-glucosidase inhibition activity in fronds and rhizomes of three Dryopteridaceae species: Cyrtomium fortunei, Polystichum polyblepharum, and P. lepidocaulon. The highest ${\alpha}$-glucosidase inhibitor obtained from frond of P. lepidocaulon ($4.16{\mu}g{\cdot}mL^{-1}$), and rhizome of C. fortunei ($1.84{\mu}g{\cdot}mL^{-1}$), showed much higher inhibition activity than acarbose ($1413.70{\mu}g{\cdot}mL^{-1}$). The biomass required to inhibit ${\alpha}$-glucosidase by 50% was 0.04 ~ 0.35mg for frond and 0.03 ~ 0.10mg for rhizome, and P. lepidocaulon required the least amount of fronds and P. lepidocaulon the least rhizomes. In frond, ${\alpha}$-glucosidase inhibition activity was the highest in water fraction of C. fortunei ($20.2{\mu}g{\cdot}mL^{-1}$), and n-butanol fraction of P. lepidocaulon ($9.33{\mu}g{\cdot}mL^{-1}$) and P. polyblepharum ($5.10{\mu}g{\cdot}mL^{-1}$). In rhizome, it was the highest in n-butanol fractions of C. fortunei ($19.76{\mu}g{\cdot}mL^{-1}$) and P. polyblepharum ($4.47{\mu}g{\cdot}mL^{-1}$), and ethylacetate fraction of P. lepidocaulon ($5.46{\mu}g{\cdot}mL^{-1}$). The frond biomass required for 50% ${\alpha}$-glucosidase inhibition was the lowest in the water fraction of C. fortunei (1.43mg), and n-butanol fractions of P. lepidocaulon (1.10mg) and P. polyblepharum (0.66mg). The required biomass of rhizome was the lowest in the water fraction of C. fortunei (1.59mg), and n-hexane fractions of P. lepidocaulon (0.04mg) and P. polyblepharum (0.15mg). The result of this study suggested that the three Dryopteridaceae species had high ${\alpha}$-glucosidase inhibition activity with small biomass, which might have high value as materials for economical anti-diabetic medication.

  • Macromyzus woodwardiae(Takahashi, 1921) is recognized on Cyrdomium falcatum(L.f.) C. Presl (Dryopteridaceae), a htherto unknown host plant, from Jeju Island, Korea. Apterous viviparous female and alate viviparous female are described. This is the first record of genus Macromyzus in Korea.

First report of Dryopteris namegatae and reexamination of D. hangchowensis (Dryopteridaceae) from Korea

  • One newly recorded species, Dryopteris namegatae, sect. Hirtipedes, was collected in forests in Jeju-do. Dryopteris namegatae (vernacular name: 'Tam-ra-top-ji-ne-go-sa-ri') was distinguished from other Korean congeners of sect. Hirtipedes of the genus Dryopteris by having stiff black scales on stipe and rachis, less narrowed base of lamina, and adaxial surface of pinna immersed along veins. Dryopteris hangchowensis ('Gak-si-top-ji-ne-go-sa-ri', new local name), recorded without any comments and description, was reexamined with similar taxa and was distinguished by smaller plants, brilliant leaves, many prominent fimbriate blackish scales on stipe and rachis, long-pointed apex of lamina and pinna, halfway-lobed pinna, and narrowest pinna. Descriptions and illustrations of the two species and their photographs in the habitat are provided along with a key to the species of sect. Hirtipedes of Dryopteris in Korea.
