Recent concern regarding price and availability of fossil fuels has spurred the interest in alternative sources for farm crop drying. Among the available options such as biomass energy, wind power, nuclear energy and solar energy etc., the increasing attention is being directed to the utilization of heat from solar energy especially for farm crop drying. Even though solar energy is dispersed over a large land area and only a relatively small amount of energy can be simply collected, the advantages of solar energy is that the energy is free, non-polluting. The study reported here was designed to help supply the informations for the development of simple and relatively inexpensive solar warehouse for farm crop drying and storage. Specifically, the objectives of this study were to determine the performance of the solar collector fabricated, to compare solar supplemented heat drying with natural air drying and to develop a simulation model of temperature in stored grain, which can be used to study the effects due to changes in ambient air temperature. For those above objectives, solar collector was fabricated from available materials. Corrugated steel galvanized sheet, painted flat black, was used as absorbers and clear 0.2mm polyethylene sheet was the cover material. The warehouse for rough rice drying and storage was constructed with concrete block, and the solar collector was used as the roof of warehouse instead of original roofing system of it. The results obtained in this study were as follows: 1. The thermal efficiency of the solar collector was average 26 percent and the overall heat transfer coefficient of the collector was approximately $25kJ/hr.m^2\;^{\circ}K$. 2. Solar heated air was sufficient to dry one cubic meter of rough rice from 23.5 to 15.0 percent in 7 days and natural air was able to dry the same amount of rough rice from 20.0 to 5 percent in l2 days. 3. Drying with solar heat reduced the required drying time to dry the same amount of rough rice into a half compared to natural air drying, but overdrying problems of the bottom layer were so severe that these problems should be thoroughly analyzed. 4. Simulation model of temperature in stored grain was developed and the results of predicted temperature agreed well with test results. 5. Based on those simulated temperature, changes in the grain-temperature were a large at the points of the wallside and the damage of the grain would be severe at the contact area of wall.
This study aimed to investigate the drying characteristics of Caragana sinica Rehder flowers, which are basic data necessary for increasing utilization. The flowers were harvested in mid-April and dried at different hot-air temperatures (50-90℃), and the physicochemical properties of the dried flowers were analyzed. It was found that the drying rate was proportional to the air temperature. The visual color of dried flowers was relatively strong in green when dried at 50℃, while browning was relatively severe when dried at 90℃. The greenness (-a* value) of the mechanical color of the powder decreased with increasing temperature, and the yellowness (b* value) decreased with increasing temperature above 70℃. The soluble solids of the hot water extract were maintained at a certain level after increasing up to 70℃, and the pH decreased with increasing temperature. The total polyphenol contents tended to increase with increasing temperature, and DPPH radical scavenging activity did not show a significant change after increasing up to 70℃. These results suggest that the hot-air drying temperature had a significant effect on the physicochemical characteristics of the C. sinica flower. The appropriate hot-air drying temperature was judged to be less than 50℃ for maintaining the unique color, and approximately 70℃ considering the high hot-water extraction yield and antioxidant capacity.
Drying shrinkage cracking which may be caused by the relatively large specific surface is a matter of grave concern for latex modified concrete(LMC) overlay and rapid-setting cement latex modified concrete(RSLMC) overlay. Therefore, the purpose of this dissertation was to study the drying shrinkage properties of LMC and RSLMC with the main experimental variables such as cement types(ordinary portland cement, rapid setting cement), latex contents(0, 5, 10, 15, 20%), W-C ratios, and curing days at a same controlled environment of 60% of relative humidity and $20^{\circ}C$ of temperature. Test results revealed that the drying shrinkage of latex modified concrete(LMC), rapid-setting cement latex modified concrete(RSLMC) was considerably lower than that of ordinary portland cement concrete(OPC), rapid-setting cement concrete(RSC), respectively. This may be attributed to the interlocking of hydrated cement and aggregates by a film of latex particles, water retention due to hydrophobic and colloidal properties of the latexes, resulting in reduced water evaporation.
The characteristics of cobalt oxide powders prepared by hot petroleum drying method from the cobalt acetate were evaluated by DTA/TGA, XRD, BET, SEM and density measurement. The cobalt oxide powder could be prepared by hot petroleum drying of the emulsion of cobalt acetate salt solution and the subsequent thermal decomposition of the acetate at 300$^{\circ}C$. As the concentration of the salt solution and the calcination temperature of the dried powder increased, the surface area of the synthesized powder decreased due to the particle growth, so that after sintering the density and grain size decreased. For the same concentration of the salt solution, the surface area and sinterability of the powder by hot petroleum drying increased in comparision with those by conventional drying.
Near Infrared Ray (NIR) are primarily of interest to the high energy physicist. It is the intermediate portion of the spectrum, which extends from approximately 0.8 to 1.5 ${\mu}m$ and include a portion of the all of infrared, that is thermal radiation and is pertinent to heat transfer. It is important to study that temperature distribution of the drying materials by surface encompasses a range of NIR wave lengths. This study is to investigate the characteristics of NIR dryer by experimental results. it was made a comparison with various textiles, velocity ratio and distance of lamp and textiles. In case of spongy type textile the drying performance is the superior of all. The 0.15m distance drying effect of improvement 30% more than 0.26m distance between lamp and textiles. As the contained water increases, the drying speed for textile can be increased.

The look up table method conventionally applied to control the inner temperature and humidity of a laver drying machine has repeatedly occurred not only laver's damage but also inferior goods since the reaching time at the optimum state takes a long time. In this paper, a fuzzy control theory instead of the look up table was proposed to reduce the reaching time at the optimum state. The proposed method used six input variables and four output variables for the fuzzy control, and a triangle rule for a fuzzifier, The Mandani's min-max method was applied to a fuzzy inference. Also, the mean method of maximum was applied to a defuzzifier. The method applied to the fuzzy controller contributed to reduce the reaching time at the optimum state, and to minimize not only laver's damage but also inferior goods.
The optimal condition for minimal agglomeration of barium titanyl oxalate tetrahydrate, the precipitate on preparing barium titanate by oxalate process, was investigated. Burette-dropping and dual-nozzle-spraying were used as adding methods. pH of washing water for precipitates was changed, and sodium pyrophosphate solution, methanol, ethoanol, and acetone were used as washing agents for precipitates, as well as distilled water. Drying temperature was changed from $50^{\circ}C$ to $120^{\circ}C$. Spraying, methanol-washing, and drying at $60^{\circ}C$ showed the most dispersed distribution, Below $70^{\circ}C$, the crystalline phases were observed.
Oxidized PAN (OXI-PAN) fibers were used for the precursors of activated carbon fiber in study. How drying temperature affected the properties of carbon fibers on activating process of carbon fibers was investigated. The specific surface areas of activated carbon fibers have been determined on a series of chemically activated carbons with KOH and NaOH. The experimental data showed variations in specific surface area, iodine and silver adsorptions by the activated carbon fibers. The amount of iodine adsorption increases with increasing specific surface areas in both activation methods. This was because the ionic radius of iodine was smaller than the interior micropore size of activated carbon fibers. Silver adsorbed well in NaOH activated carbon fibers rather than KOH activated carbon fibers in this study.

Major characteristics of shrinking and rehydration of Korean tea-leaves were investigated in the hot-air drying equipment. Experiments were performed with various drying temperature, plucking time, heating method and rolling condition. The values of shrinking raito and rate were the highest at 7$0^{\circ}C$ in the range of 3$0^{\circ}C$ to 9$0^{\circ}C$. The 1st tea-leaves and showed higher values. Shrinking ratio was 16.62 and 19.62% for leaves and stems; shrinking rate was found 0.083 and 0.091cm/hr.cm, respectively. The rehydration characteristics of tea-leaves at the drying temperature of 3$0^{\circ}C$ were fairly satisfactory. The 2nd tea-leaves showed higher value than others, while the natural tea-leaves were lower. Average rehydration ratio and rehydration rate constant were 85.7% and 0.063/min for leaves; 80.1% and 0.032/min for stems, respectively.
Although widely applied in the food industry, extrusion cooking has not been applied to the traditional red ginseng process for steaming and drying ginseng. We therefore investigated the change in the effective components in red ginseng (total saponins, ginsenosides and maltol) from extruded raw ginseng. The variables were the drying temperature of the sliced raw ginseng (80 and $90^{\circ}C$) before the extrusion process and the moisture content (15 and 22%, w.b.) during the extrusion process. Ginsenosides Rg1 and Rg2 were detected in dried ginseng at $80^{\circ}C$, but ginsenoside Rg3, which was contained in red ginseng, was not detected. On the other hand, ginsenosides Rg1, Rg2 and Rg3 were detected in extruded ginseng at moisture contents of 15 and 22%. Total ginsenosides were highest at $90^{\circ}C$ drying temperature and 22% moisture content for the extrusion process.
