  • After it was known that an antioxidant function was associated with a reducing risk of cancer and cardiovascular disease, a large number of plant have been investigated for their antioxidant activity. However, lacking of the extensive antioxidant data in vegetables, a few natural antioxidant was used in the food industry. Therefore, this study was carried out to provide some scientific antioxidant activity data in the various vegetables. The samples (n = 275) including 24 kinds of vegetables were examined for antioxidant activity. Total Phenol Contents (TPCs) were measured colorimetric determination method using the Folin-Ciocalteu reagent by gallic acid as the control group. DPPH radical scavenging activity were also investigated using calculation of $IC_{50}$(concentration of extracted needed to inhibit 50% of the DPPH radical). The contents of TPCs were $0.32{\sim}49.26{\mu}g/kg$ and DPPH radical scavenging activity ($CI_{50}$) was 0.0~2.43 mg/mL in vegetables. The best antioxidant effect was shown in Garlic for both antioxidant assay methods.

  • Hydroxyapatite (Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2) is known as the main inorganic component of mature mammalian bones and teeth. Because of its biocompatibility, hydroxyapatite has attracted much attention due to its potential applications in many biomedical researches. Here, we tested a therapeutic potential for the use of hydroxyapatite as an anticancer drug delivery vector. We prepared various types of hydroxyapatite having different chemical contents and morphologies using hydrothermal synthesis. The capability of hydroxyapatite as drug delivery materials was examined by adsorption kinetics of 5-fluorouracil molecules, a common anticancer drug, in phosphate buffered saline. We find that hydroxyapatite with smaller crystal size and higher phosphate contents shows improved adsorption property. Given that hydroxyapatite provides a scaffold for bone regeneration, these results highlight a potential use of hydroxyapatite in therapies aimed at osteosarcoma.

  • This study tested a path model of agenda building examining the relationship among the media, the public and the presidential statements on the issue of drug abuse during the Bush administration's War on Drugs. The results showed that a dynamic and interactive relationship among aforementioned actors. First, the real-world conditions strongly increased both media coverage and presidential statements. Second, the news media and president influenced each other. Third, public concern, however, did not function as a significant factor in agenda-building process in this study. The result of this study indicates that Bush was not utterly a reactive or proactive president in terms of his relationship with the media. That is, news media and the president interacted regarding the drug issues; the relationship between President Bush and the media for drug issues was reciprocal.

  • Purpose : To shorten processing time for variety of medical affairs of the patient at the outpatient clinic of a big hospital is very important to qualify medical care of the patient. Therefore, patient's waiting time for drug delivery after doctor's prescription is often utilized as a strong tool to evaluate patient satisfaction with a medical care provided. We performed this study to investigate factors influencing patient satisfaction related with waiting time for drug delivery. Methods : The data were collected from July 21 to August 12, 1998. A total 535 patients or their families who visited outpatient clinics of Inha University Hospital were subjected to evaluate the drug delivery time and the level of their satisfaction related, which were compared with those objectively evaluated by Quality Improvement Team. The reliability of the scale was tested with Cronbach's alpha, and the data were analyzed using frequency, t-test, ANOVA, correlation analysis and multiple regression. Results : The mean drug delivery time subjectively evaluated by the patient (16.1 13.0 min) was longer than that objectively evaluated (10.9 7.6 min) by 5.2 min. Drug delivery time objectively evaluated was influenced by the prescription contents, total amount or type of drug dispensed, etc, as expected. The time discrepancy between two evaluations was influenced by several causative factors. One of those proved to be a patient's late response to the information from the pharmacy which the drug is ready to deliver. Interestingly, this discrepancy was found to be more prominent especially when waiting place for drug delivery was not less crowded. Other factors, pharmaceutical counseling at the pharmacy, emotional status or behavior of a patient while he waits for the medicine, were also found to influence the time subjectively evaluated. Regarding the degree of patient satisfaction with the drug delivery, majority of patients accepted drug delivery time with less than 10 min. It was also found to be influenced by emotional status of the patient as well as kindness or activity of pharmaceutical counselor. Conclusion : The results show that, besides prescription contents, behavior pattern or emotional status of a patient, environment of the waiting place, and quality of pharmaceutical counseling at the pharmacy, may influence the patient's subjective evaluation of waiting time for drug delivery and his satisfaction related with the service in the big hospital. In order to improve patient satisfaction related with waiting time for drug delivery, it will be cost effective to qualify pharmaceutical counseling and information system at the drug delivery site or waiting place rather than to shorten the real processing time within the pharmacy.

  • The purpose of this study is estimate the effects of treatment program as it stands for drug abusers in prison. For this study, 46 drug-related prisoner were surveyed in January, 2008 at Jinju prison which has provided special treatments for drug-related offenders. This study shows that the present treatment systems or programs don't work effectively than expected. Prisoner feel present programs won't be very helpfully after release. And they feel correction officers don't have enough concern about prisoners or treatment to them. The result also emphasizes that family members or friends' support and belief is essential to prevent recidivism and to decrease such a possibility. According to this survey result, special concern to youth abuser is necessary. And it can give more effectiveness when authorities provide more medical or physical treatments than just based on routine lecturing. Furthermore, small group treatments would be more successful comparing with large member group based program. Drug abusers want more experience study or work study programs. Finally authority's, family's, friends's and colleague's interest or concern toward prisoners could contribute to raise up the possibility of rehabilitation.

  • Some mucoadhesive polymers such as hydroxypropylcelluose (HPC) and carbopol-934 (CP) have been employed for the preparation of mucoadhesive polymeric systems, and their physical properties including mucoadhesion, swelling, and drug release were evaluated. A new simple experimental technique that can quantitatively measure the bioadhesive properties of various polymeric systems has been developed by the methods of detachment force test. As the polymeric systems, the discs of freeze-dried HPC/CP solid dispersions were prepared. The mucosa used in these tests were upper, middle, and lower parts of small intestine of male rats weighing $300{\sim}350\;g$. Detachment forces were increased as the mole fraction of CP increased in discs of HPC/CP solid dispersions. In the points of intestinal site dependence of mucoadhesion, the solid dispersions revealed non-specific mucoadhesion to the intestine. Swelling and drug release characteristics of mucoadhesive polymeric systems were studied extensively to find out the feasibility for the oral controlled delivery systems. Swelling ratio, expressed as the final height/initial height, has been determined in various pH buffer solutions. Hydrochlorothiazide (HCT) was employed as a model drug for release study. Apparent swelling and drug release rate constants, $K_s$ and $K_r$ respectively, were obtained from the square-root time plot of either swelling ratio or released amount of drug, particularly for the time periods before reaching the equilibrium. As a result, the swelling ratio of HPC/CP solid dispersions was increased as the weight percentage of CP increased. Similarly, the release of HCT from the solid dispersions was dependent on pH changes and CP contents, resulted in the slower release of HCT with the increases of pH and CP contents.

  • The objective of this study was to establish a multi-residue quantitative method for the analysis of anthelmintic and antiprotozoal drugs in various livestock products (beef, pork, and chicken) using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Each compound performed validation at three different levels i.e., 0.5, 1, and 2× the maximum residue limit according to the CODEX guidelines (CAC/GL 71-2009). This study was conducted according to the modified quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe procedure. The matrix-matched calibrations gave correlation coefficients >0.98, and the obtained recoveries were in the range of 60.2%-119.9%, with coefficients of variation ≤32.0%. Furthermore, the detection and quantification limits of the method were in the ranges of 0.03-3.2 and 0.1-9.7 ㎍/kg, respectively. Moreover, a survey of residual anthelmintic and antiprotozoal drugs was also carried out in 30 samples of beef, pork, and chicken collected in Korea. Toltrazuril sulfone was detected in all three samples. Thus, our results indicated that the developed method is suitable for determining the anthelmintic and antiprotozoal drug contents in livestock products.
