Spatial Distribution Characteristics of Small LRE-injector's Spray-droplet According to the Variation of Fuel-injection Pressure (소형 액체로켓엔진 인젝터 분무의 연료분사압력 변이에 따른 액적의 공간분포 특성)

  • Dual-mode Phase Doppler Anemometry (DPDA) was used to scrutinize the spatial distribution characteristics of spray emanating from a small Liquid-Rocket Engine (LRE) injector. Droplet size and velocity were measured according to the variation of injection pressure along the plane normal to the spray stream and then the spray characteristic parameters such as Arithmetic Mean Diameter (AMD), Sauter Mean Diameter (SMD), number density, span of drop size distribution, and volume flux were deduced for an investigation of spray breakup characteristics. As the injection pressure increases, the number density, span, and volume flux of spray droplets become higher, whereas the AMD gets smaller.

  • We have investigated the inter-relationship between the ink-jet printability and the physical fluid properties by monitoring the droplet formation dynamics. Printability of the fluids was judged based on the inverse of Ohnesorge number ($Z^{-1}$) that relates to the viscosity, surface tension, and density of the fluid.

  • Simultaneous laser ignition and spectroscopy is a scheme that enables rapid determination of the local equivalence ratio and condensed fuel concentration during a reaction in a two phase spray flame. We have conducted quantitative analysis of the LIBS signals according to the equivalence ratio, droplet size, droplet number density and droplet concentration as a part of novel feedback control strategy proposed for flame ignition and stabilization with simultaneous in situ combustion flow diagnostics. This is a desirable scheme since such real time information onboard an engine for instance can be constantly monitored and fed back to the control loop to enhance the mixing process and minimize emissions of unwanted species and potential combustion instability.

  • The effects of fuel density and fuel viscosity on spray characteristics were investigated under two different gas turbine fuels and various fuel supply pressure conditions through measurement of SMD, number density and volume flux by using PDPA system in dual orifice injector for gas turbine engines. In this study, we found out that the droplet size and spray structure are strongly depend on fuel density for dual orifice injector. The spray characteristics of high density fuel in dual orifice injector are similar with the characteristics of low density fuel in single orifice injector. The shear region between primary main fuel stream and secondary main fuel stream is examined in low density fuel condition but not exist in high density fuel condition, then this shear region is very important in quality of gas turbine spray. There are worth consideration for the effect of fuel density on spray characteristics in frontal device design to improve combustion efficiency.

  • This paper presents the spray characteristics of the oxidizer rich preburner injector which can be used in the high-thrust rocket system. We designed the basic shape of the liquid-liquid coaxial swirl injector for the rocket oxidizer rich preburner injection system. To understand the spray angle variation with the high pressure environment, the spray visualization in the high pressure chamber was preformed. Also we measured the droplet velocity, the Sauter Mean Diameter(SMD), the volume flux and the number density with the PDPA system by using water in atmospheric pressure. The results show that the spray angle is reduced by increasing ambient pressure and maximum droplet velocity is shown from a nozzle tip and then the droplet velocity decreases as a spray moves to the downstream. The SMD decreases on the axial distance from 20 mm to 50 mm but it increases over 50 mm. That is due to the increasing number of collision with each droplet and interaction with ambient air on going downstream direction.

  • A number of new ideas have been implemented to control the droplet morphology and electrooptic properties of holographic polymer dispersed liquid crystal (HPDLC). Doping of conductive fullerene particles to the conventional HPDLC induced dual effects of reducing both droplet coalescence and operating voltage. Chain transfer agent gave higher gel content with lower crosslink density, less dark reactions and less grating shrinkage with much smooth LC-polymer interfaces. Addition of octanoic acid (OA) to the formulation of HPDLC gave a decrease in droplet size and monotonic increase of the off state diffraction throughout the OA content.

  • Two-dimensional laser visualization methods have been used in the study of breakup and atomization processes of non-evaporating diesel sprays. A single-hole spray injected into a quiescent atmospheric environment was visualized by the LIF(Laser Induced Fluorescence) and scattering technique. The LIF technique could be implemented to take the images which are magnified enough to show the shape of liquid ligaments and small droplets. The spontaneous scattering and fluorescent images of sprays were also taken to investigate the atomization of droplets. In the tip and periphery of a spray. the scattering light is bright and the ratio of fluorescent/scattering intensity is lower. This characteristics indicate the very high number density of small droplets which are well atomized.

  • Paraffin wax is attracting many attentions for promising solid fuel of hybrid rocket because of its higher regression than other fuels. However, even with paraffin fuel combustion, unsteady low-frequency oscillation of combustion pressure is still observed. And, this is related to the formation of liquid layer and the entrainment of fuel droplets entering the axial combustion gas flow. This study investigates the effect of additional combustion of fuel droplets on the occurrence of low-frequency combustion instability. On the other hand, the formation of fuel droplets depends on Weber Number (the ratio of the inertial force to the surface tension of the liquid) and Reynolds Number of the oxidizer flow. Therefore, a laboratory-scale hybrid rocket was used to monitor the occurrence of combustion instability while changing We number. A series of combustion tests were conducted to control We number by changing the oxidizer flow rate or adding LDPE (low density polyethylene) to base fuel. In the results, it was confirmed that there is a critical We number above which the low-frequency combustion instability occurs.

  • Atomization characteristics of small LRE-injector spray are investigated by using dual-mode phase Doppler anemometry (DPDA). Velocity, size, number density, and volume flux were measured at various injection pressures along the radial distance to make a close inquiry into spatial distribution characteristic of spray droplets. As the injection pressure increases, the velocity, turbulence intensity, number density, and volume flux of spray droplets become higher, whereas the droplet size ($D_{10}$ or $D_{32}$) gets smaller. Also, velocity and volume flux are proportional to Sauter mean diameter (SMD, $D_{32}$).

  • This paper describes the influence of the electrode materials, moisture content, electrolyte density, temperature, surface state, ion absorbent on the C.T.I of phenolic resin by the I.E,C, 112 method. C.T.I are increased for electrode materials with low hydrogen overvoltage and high soluble point. Increusing moisture content of samples increased by logarithmical on the droplet number to tracking breakdown. Increasing electrolyte temperature region above 70-80(.deg.C) decreased hydrogen over-voltage, following the density changes are decreased by C.T.I=1/aD$^{2}$-bD+C.
