This paper presents results for dispensing and measuring micro-particles using a pneumatic dispensing system. Particle-suspended liquid droplets were dispensed and analyzed quantitatively at various particle concentrations and applied pressures. By using a developed experimental setup, the number of particles and the particle volume ratio in sequentially dispensed droplets were measured. Hydrophilic and hydrophobic surfaces were tested to find a suitable surface for counting the number of particle. It was confirmed that the dispensed particles concentrated into the center of the droplet on the smooth CD surface after evaporation of liquid. As the applied positive pressure increased, the number of particles per droplet increased consistently and the volume fraction of particles remained constant.
This study is focussed on the investigation of spray characteristics from the high pressure gasoline injector for the application of gasoline direct injection engine. For the analysis of spray structure of high pressure gasoline injector; the laser scattering method with a Nd-Yag laser and the Phase Doppler particle analyzer system were applied to observe the spray development and the measurement of the droplet size and velocity of the spray, respectively. Also spatial velocity distribution of the spray droplet was measured by use of the particle image velocity system. Experimental results show that high pressure gasoline injector shapes the hollow-cone spray, and produce the upward ring shaped vortex on the spray surface region. This upward ring shaped vortex promotes the secondary atomization of fuel droplets and contributes to a uniform distribution of fuel droplets. Most of fuel droplets are distributed under 31$\mu m$ of the mean droplet size (SMD) and the frequency distribution of the droplet size under 25$\mu m$ is over 95% at 7 MPa of injection pressure. According to the experimental results of PIV system, the flow patterns of the droplets velocity distribution in spray region are in good agreement with the spray macroscopic behaviors obtained from the visualization investigation.
The impact force on the single and overlap region of twin spray was experimentally evaluated using visualization method in full cone type swirl nozzle spray. Visualization of spray was conducted to obtain the spray angle and breakup process. The photography/imaging technique, based on Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) using high-speed camera, was adopted for the direct observation of droplet motion and axial velocity measurement, respectively. Droplet size was measured by Particle Motion Analyze System (PMAS). The purpose of this study is to provide fundamental information of spray characteristics, such as impact force, for higher etching factor in the practical wet etching system. It was found that the spray angle, axial velocity and impact force were increased with increasing the nozzle pressure while droplet size decreased with increasing the nozzle pressure. Droplet size increased as the distance from nozzle tip was decreased. The impact force of twin spray in the overlap region was about 63.29, 67.02, 52.41% higher than that of single spray at 40, 50 and 60 mm of nozzle pitch, respectively. Also, the nozzle pitch was one of the important factors in the twin spray characteristics.
Droplet size is one of the important factors in the deposition and drift of agrichemical application. In this study, droplet size and its distribution of the three different sizes of ceramic hollow cone nozzles being used in the air carrier sprayer for apple production were investigated at the various nozzle pressures and the three air velocities. The Malvern particle size analyzer were used for the measurement of droplet size and its distribution. The important results emerged from th is study can be summarized as follows. 1. Discharged rate was increase with the increase of the nozzle diameter and pressure, amount of the difference was remarkable between the nozzle diameter of 1.0, 1.2 and 1.5 mm, but no difference were found between the diameter of 1.0 and 1.2 mm in the same nozzle pressure. 2. Mass median diameter were varied as 40~160 ${mu}m$ at the air velocity of 0 m/s, 70~140 ${mu}m$ of 15 m/s and 100~160 ${mu}m$ of 20 m/s 3. It appeared that the air velocity range of 15~20 m/s was desirable for both drift and deposition control in the given experimental conditions.
This paper describes the macroscopic behavior and atomization characteristics of the high-pressure gasoline injector in direct-injection gasoline engine. The global spray behavior of fuel injector was visualized by shadowgraph technique. The atomization characteristics of gasoline spray such as mean diameter and mean velocity of droplet were measured by the phase Doppler particle analyzer system. In order to obtain the influence of fuel injection pressure, the macroscopic visualization and experiment of particle measurement on the fuel spray were investigated at 3,5 and 7 MPa of injection pressure under different surrounding pressure in the spray chamber. The results of this work show that the fuel injection pressure of gasoline injector in GDl engine has influence upon the mean droplet diameter, mean velocity of spray droplet, the spray tip penetration, and spray width under the elevated ambient pressure.
The effect of nozzle characterristics on the mist-cooling heat transfer was investigated under the various flow conditions. Two different types of twin fluid nozzle were used, one is a $90^{\circ}$ angle tip nozzle with needle and the other is a $90^{\circ}$ angle tip non-needle nozzle. The cooling rate from the heated surface was measured and obtained the boiling curve as a function of surface temperature. An immersion sampling was employed for the measurement of droplet size of the spray. As a result of this experiment, the liquid sheet type nozzle shows better atomization when the mass ratio Mr>2.0, and collects more liquid droplets on the heated surface that results in better cooling effect. It was found that the maximum heat flux and heat transfer coefficient increased with increase in the volumetric flow rate, whereas the maximum heat flux decreased with increase in spray distance. The cooling effect depends upon the amount of collected droplet and droplet size, but it strongly depends upon the amount of collected droplet.
In this paper we report the method of visualizing and measuring the fluid flow within a small droplet of millimeter size. We use a vertical laser sheet in visualization of the micrometer size and special attention is given to the arrangement of microscope to obtain clear images. Then we use a PIV technique to measure the velocity of the internal flow from the images taken. Since the droplet is of spherical shape, the images represent highly deteriorated picture of the real objects due to the refraction phenomenon. In order to compensate the refraction, we in this study developed two kinds of methods for the real velocity. In the first method, the refracted images are directly used to obtain the velocity in the image space, and then the velocity is transformed to the real space. In the second method the images are first transformed to the real-space objects, and then the PIV is used to measure the velocity field. We compared the two results to prove the usefulness of the compensation technique.
The effective water management in a polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is one of the key strategies for improving cell performance and durability. In this work, an ex situ measurement was carried out to understand the water droplet behavior on the surface of gas diffusion layer (GDL) as a fundamental study for establishing novel water management. For that purpose, simplified cell including one rib and two flow channels was designed and fabricated. Using this ex situ device, the water droplet emergence through the GDL of the PEMFC was emulated to understand liquid water transport through the porous diffusion medium. Through the visualization experiment, the emergence and growth of water droplets at the channel/GDL interface are mainly observed with the surface characteristics of GDL (SGL 10BA, 24BA) and rib when the liquid water passes through the GDL and is expelled to the flow channel. It is expected that the results obtained from this study can contribute to the better understanding on the water droplet behavior (emergence and removal) in the flow channels of PEMFC.
Surface energy is the principal factor of anti-condensation. High surface energy appears hydrophilic itself and low surface energy represents hydrophobic itself. The contact angle is widely being used for measurement of surface energy of materials, evaluation of coating performances, measurement of wettability, and so on. However, the existing contact angle measuring system is so expensive for purchasing and complicated, so it takes a lot of time and money to use. This study was conducted to develop the algorithm for evaluating hydrophilic performance through measuring the contact angle of water droplet automatically, and fabricate relatively simple measuring system using a low-cost monochrome camera and image processing. A constant amount of water was firstly allocated on a slide by a micropipette, and then the image of water droplet was captured by monochrome digital camera and sent to a computer. The image was binarized and then reduced noises by labeling. Finally, the contact angle of water droplet was computed by using three points (left, right, and top coordinates), simple linear mathematics, and trigonometric function. The experimental results demonstrated the accuracy and reproducibility of the developed system showing less deviations and deviation ratio.
With desires for safe food, there is growing concern that pesticide spray drift will expose people, plants, and the environment to pesticide residue and potential negative effects thereof. For highly efficient, safe spray application, technologies for measuring the spray drift should be developed and improved with some urgency. This study investigated the applicability of two optical particle counters (OPCs), which are mostly used to measure airborne particle mass concentration, for measurement of airborne pesticide spray drift. Experiments were conducted in a controlled laboratory and an ash tree orchard to evaluate the handiness and accuracy of two OPCs, OPC 1 and OPC 2. The experimental results indicated that the OPC 1 was better applicable to the measurement of spray drift in the field while the use of the OPC 2 was limited due to its narrow range of measurable droplet sizes. The readings of the OPC 1 produced highly accurate results ($R^2=0.9637$) compared to the actual spray drift. For better application of OPCs, this study suggests the OPCs should be positioned properly to inhale spray droplets of the appropriate size and concentration.
