  • Understanding of the impinging behavior of an electrically charged spray is essential in determining appropriate operating conditions for electro-spraying of paints, surface coating materials and insecticides. In the present work, the wall impact behavior of an electrically charged drop has been investigated and compared with that of a neutral drop experimentally. The critical Sommerfeld number representing the spread-splash boundary for the charged drop impacting on the dielectric substrate turned out to be larger compared to that for the neutral drop with the same surface condition. The change of the transition boundary is due to the increase in the surface wettability of the drop on the substrate. However, with the electrically conducting substrates, the charging effect on the transition boundary appeared negligible. This is because the electric discharging time is much shorter than the time required for the flattened drop to reach its maximum extent.

  • The voltage drop in distribution path of battery-reserved DC power system can affect the total of battery, cable and electricity costs. To determine an optimum voltage drop in distribution path for minimizing the total cost, battery, cable and electricity costs are represented as a function of the voltage drop, respectively, and are summed up to the total cost. An optimum voltage drop is selected as the value giving the minimum total cost. In this paper, a design technique of optimum voltage drop in distribution path of DC power system is proposed to minimize the total of battery, cable and electricity costs. The design procedure is described and design curve for selecting optimum voltage drop is also presented as a function of distribution distance.

  • A reciprocating compressor used in domestic refrigerators can be subjected to many different forms of shock. These shocks are usually experienced during transporting the products from a manufacturer to customers. The hermetic structure of this kind of compressor makes it difficult to conduct drop tests for identifying the failure mechanism and their drop behaviors. The drop/impact simulation for a reciprocating compressor has been carried out with the explicit code LS-DYNA and its validation has been experimentally verified. Simulation results are in good agreement with those of drop test. The present method of drop/impact simulation provides an efficient and powerful solution to improve the design quality and reduce the design period.

  • Dense Wavelength division multiplexing(DWDM) lightwave system requires multiplexer, demultiplexer and optical filter. In this paper, thus, we propose the Add-Drop Mux/Demux based on a Mach-Zehnder interferometer(MZI) with fiber Bragg grating(FBG). The Add-Drop Mux/Demux using FBG and MZI is able to minimize system and reduce weight. We also analyze output characteristics of Add-Drop Mux/Demux and present the optimum design data through the computer simulation.

  • In this study, evaporation pressure drop experiments were conducted with two types of plate and shell heat exchangers (P&SHE) using R-22. An experimental refrigerant loop has been established to measure the evaporation pressure drop of R-22 in a vertical P&SHE. The flow channels were formed by stacking three plates having a corrugated channel of a chevron angle of 45 dog. The R-22 flows down in one channel exchanging heat with the hot water flowing up in the other channel. The effect of the refrigerant mass flux, average heat flux, system pressure and vapor quality were explored in detail. During the experiment, the quality change between the inlet and outlet of the refrigerant channel ranges from 0.03 to 0.15. The present data showed that two types of P&SHE have similar trends. The pressure drop in-creases with the vapor quality for both types of P&SHE. At a higher mass flux, the Pressure drop is higher for the entire range of the vapor quality. Also, the increase in the average heat flux increases the pressure drop. Finally, at a higher system pressure, the pressure drop is found to be slightly lower compared to the lower system pressure.

  • A high-pressure, high-pressure drop control valve, which transforms the power transfer of a system by reducing the inlet pressure of 345bartothe outlet pressure of 112bar, is a fundamental component in an offshore plant process. With the increasingly growing market share of the maritime industry, this valve has been expected to be a high-value-added product. This study not only analyzes the relation between pressure drop and fluid velocity in a trim by using fluid analysis, but also examines the possibility of cavitation in a valve in addition to the plot for the extension of lifespan. Based on the analysis results, the design and production method of the valve are established, and accordingly, performance evaluation is carried out. It is demonstrated that the pressure drop from 345bar to 112bar is more feasible in the presence of the trim, which can induce a continuous and diminutive pressure drop in order to prevent cavitation in a high-pressure drop control valve. Furthermore, despite the fluid velocity near a seatring being found to be over 30m/s, the lifespan of the valve is determined to be adequate considering the operation condition of a prototype valve of 80%.

  • An experimental study on the pressure drop during flow boiling for pure refrigerants R134a and Rl23, and their mixture was carried out in a uniformly heated horizontal tube. Tests were run at a pressure of 0.6 MPa and in the ranges of heat flux 5~50 kW/m$^2$, vapor quality 0~100 percent and mass velocity of 150~600 kg/m$^2$s. Generally, the two-phase frictional multiplier is used to predict the frictional pressure drop during the two-phase flow boiling. The obtained results have been compared to the existing various correlations for the two-phase multiplier. Also, the frictional pressure drop was compared to a few available correlations; The Lockhart-Martinelli correlation considerally overpredicted the frictional pressure drop data for mixture as well as pure components in the entire mass velocity ranges employed in the present study, while the Chisholm correlation underpredicted the present data. The Friedel correlation was found to satisfactorily correlate the frictional pressure drop data except for a low quality region.

  • It was verified that the effect of the distance between current input point and output point on direct current potential drop (DCPD) in the material with two-dimensional surface notch. If the distance between potential drop measuring points was fixed at a certain distance, the potential drop was decreased with increasing the distance between current input and output points. DCPD technique was a useful method for surface crack sizing because the potential drop was proportional to the length of notch. In this paper, we suggest a statistical model to describe the data and want to find a significant variables to effect to potential drop. We use R program to analyze the data.

  • Leidenfrost drops with ellipsoidal shaping can control the bouncing height by adjusting the aspect ratio(AR) of the shape at the moment of impact. In this work, we focus on the effect of the AR and the impact Weber number(We) on the non-axisymmetrical spreading dynamics of the drop, which plays an important role in the control of bouncing. To understand the impact dynamics, the numerical simulation is conducted for the ellipsoidal drop impact upon the perfect non-wetting solid surface by using volume of fluid method, which shows the characteristics of the spreading behavior in each principal axis. As the AR increases, the drop has a high degree of the alignment into one principal axis, which leads to the consequent suppression of bouncing height with shape oscillation. As the We increases, the maximum spreading diameters in the principal axes both increase whereas the contact time on the solid surface rarely depends on the impact velocity at the same AR. The comprehensive understanding of the ellipsoidal drop impact upon non-wetting surface will provide the way to control of drop deposition in applications, such as surface cleaning and spray cooling.

  • The condensation pressure drop fur refrigerant R-22 flowing in the plate and shell heat exchanger were investigated experimentally in this study. Two vertical counterflow channels were formed in the exchanger by three plates of commercial geometry with a corrugated trapezoid shape of a chevron angel of $45^{\circ}$. The condensing R-22 flowing down in one channel exchanges heat with the cold water flowing up in the other channel. The effects of the mean vapor quality, mass flux, average imposed heat flux and system pressure of R-22 on the pressure drop were explored in detail. The quality change of R-22 between the inlet and outlet of the refrigerant channel ranges from 0.03 to 0.05. The present data showed that pressure drop increases with the vapor quality. At a higher mass flux, pressure drop is higher for the entire range of the vapor quality. Also, a rise in the average imposed heat flux causes an slight increase in the Pressure drop. Finally, at a higher system pressure the pressure drop is found to be slightly lower. Correlation is also provided for the measured pressure drops in terms of the friction factor.
