  • This study investigated the effects of feeding by-product feed (BF)-based silage on the behavior of growing Hanwoo heifers. Twelve Hanwoo heifers (13.2 months-old, 315 kg body weight; four heifers per pen) were assigned to three diets: a rice straw (RS) diet (concentrate mix and free access to RS), a RS and BF-based silage (RSBFS) diet (concentrate mix and free access to RS and BF-based silage), and a BF-based silage (BFS) diet (concentrate mix and free access to BF-based silage). Behavior was recorded for 5 days using camcorders. Compared to the RS group, the BFS group showed 21.7% higher dry matter intake, shorter feeding, rumination, and chewing times, as well as longer resting time (p < 0.05). Although all groups exhibited similar drinking, urination, and defecation frequencies, the BFS group exhibited higher feeding rates, rumination efficiency, and chewing efficiency than the RS group (p < 0.05). Compared to the BFS group, the RSBFS group showed higher $peNDF_{8.0}$ intake (15.2% vs. 25.0% dry matter intake), longer feeding and sitting times, lower defecation frequency (p < 0.05), and similar rumination efficiency. In conclusion, complete replacement of conventional RS with BF-based silage reduced rumination and chewing activity in growing Hanwoo heifers, and BF-based silage feeding with large-particle straw is an effective approach in improving heifer behavior.

  • Objectives : Since prostitution is multitraumatic phenomena, it is known that most women in prostitution have symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other mental illness. In Korea, new anti-prostitution law launched in the year of 2004 imposes protecting prostituted victims at government-supported shelter. The objective of this study was to compare the mental symptoms, especially PTSD features of women who escaped from prostitution with those of control subjects. Methods : We assessed 113 ex-prostituted women who live in shelter for 8 months on the average and 65 normal control subjects. Demographic data, questionnaire for sleep, physical illness, smoking, alcohol and drug use, Stress Response Inventory, Davidson Trauma Scale (DTS), Impact of Event Scale-Revised (IES-R) were used. Results : Ex-prostituted women had significantly higher scores of DTS, IES-R, stress related responses, sleep problems, smoking problems, and alcohol problems than control group. Age and duration of sex trade of the subjects were significantly correlated with the severity or frequency of PTSD symptoms. The degree of smoking, alcohol drinking and sleep problems were also significantly correlated with the PTSD symptoms. Conclusion : These results suggested mental symptoms did not disappear even after women escaped from prostitution.

  • This study examines algae removal and reduction using ultrasonic. Experiments were carried out on frequency: 28 kHz single-wave, 40 kHz multi-wave; intensity: 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 W/L; algae concentration: 500, 1000, 1700/ml; exposure time: 1, 3, 5, 7, 10, 15, 20 min. Also, We investigated algae removal and reduction in single cistern where raw water including algae was directly exposed to ultrasonic and in the double cisterns located in 4 cm from ultrasonic vibrator. The algae type used in this study was Melosira genus of Bacillariophceae. The Bacillariophceae is the representative algae which causes blockage of filter basin. Because of its resistance against oxidizers, it flows into the filter basin after sterilization. As a result of this study, the form of Bacillariophceae was completely destroyed and dissolved after the application of ultrasonic waves unlike the sterilization using oxidizers. Removal efficiency of algae using ultrasonic waves increased in proportion to intensity and exposure time of ultrasonic waves, and in double cisterns is better than single cistern.

Dysmasesis and difficulty of swallowing occurs in various diseases, but it may be a major cause of aging, and elderly people with authoring and dysmasesis and difficulty of swallowing in the aging society is expected to increase rapidly. SUBJECTS/METHODS: In this study, we carried out a survey targeting nutritionists who work in elderly care facilities, and examined characteristics of offering of foods for elderly and the degree of demand of development of easily chewable and swallowable foods for the elderly who can crush foods and take that by their own tongues, and sometimes have difficulty in drinking water and tea. RESULTS: In elderly care facilities, it was found to provide a finely chopped food or ground food that was ground with water in a blender for elderly with dysmasesis. Elderly satisfaction of provided foods is appeared overall low. Results of investigating the applicability of foods for elderly and the reflection will of menus, were showed the highest response rate in a gelification method in molecular gastronomic science technics, and results of investigating the frequent food of the elderly; representative menu of beef, pork, white fish, anchovies and spinach, were showed Korean barbecue beef, hot pepper paste stir fried pork, pan fried white fish, stir fried anchovy, seasoned spinach were the highest offer frequency. CONCLUSIONS: This study will provide the fundamentals of the development of easily chewable and swallowable foods, gelification, for the elderly. The study will also illustrate that, in the elderly, food undergone gelification will reduce the risk of swallowing down to the wrong pipe and improve overall food preference.

  • Removal characteristics of volatile organic carbons(VOCs) by ozone oxidation and other processes in the raw water of the 1st Nakdong water treatment plant were investigated. Dichrolomethane, toluene and other 7 compounds were detected in the raw water. With regard to detected 4 compounds in finally treated water, it was found that VOCs could not be removed effectively by traditional water treatment process. Benzene, 1,2-dichlorobenzne were not detected in the raw water but they were detected in the process of treatment. The compound of highest detection frequency was dichloromethane. When the raw water was controlled at pH 7, temperature $20^{\circ}C$, 5 minutes as contact time, 10 minutes as reaction time, the removal rate of THMFP, $KMnO_4$ demand, TOC, $UV_{254nm}$ and $NH_3-N$ were 46.4%, 22%, 19.6%, 31% and 8%, respectively. From estimating the finally treated water qualities in 7 kinds of treatment processes, P-6 process(raw water-chlorination-coagulation-ozonation) was most effective for organics removal and THMs control. Removal efficiencies for $KMnO_4$ demand and TOC by the process which combined preozonation with coagulation was twice better than only preozonation. $NH_3-N$ removal rate was shown as 10% by P-3 process(raw water-coagulation-ozonation), but 83% of $NH_3-N$ was removed by P-4 process(raw water-coagulation-chlorination). It was found that the chlorination is more effective than the ozonation for the NH3-N removal as commonly known.

  • This study was carried out to develop nutrition education materials for nutrient intake and the prevention of disease for the elderly and to test their effects on the health-related matters and nutrition intakes after nutrition education. The mean age of the subjects was 71.6 years old. Diet adjustment for health increased a little bit from 2.2% to 11.1% after education but with no significance. The highest reported chronic illness was hypertension. The drinking of the subjects decreased a little bit after their education but wasn't significant. There were no significant changes to the frequency of food consumption across all the items after education, but there was a small increase to the daily intake of milk and dairy products and fruits and to a balanced diet three times per day. There was a significant increase in the intake of such nutrients as energy(p<0.05), protein(p<0.01), lipid(p<0.05), phosphorus(p<0.05), sodium (p<0.05), vitamin $B_2$(p<0.05), vitamin $B_6$(p<0.05), and niacin(p<0.001) after education. Those findings show that nutrition education provided to the elderly had no clear effects on the items that required memorization such as nutrition knowledge but did have some effects on dietary life. If the nutrition education requiring memorization is provided repeatedly with data supplemented, more effective nutrition management will be possible.
