Comparison of Optimum Drilling Conditions of Aircraft CFRP Composites using CVD Diamond and PCD Drills (CVD 다이아몬드 및 PCD이 드릴을 이용한 항공용 CFRP 복합재료의 홀 가공성 비교)

  • Recently CFRP laminate joints process by bolts and nets are developed rapidly in aircraft industries. However, there are serious drawback during jointing process. Many hole processes are needed for the manufacturing and structural applications using composite materials. Generally, very durable polycrystalline crystalline diamond (PCD) drill has been used for the CFRP hole process. However, due to the expensive price and slow process speed, chemical vapor deposition (CVD) diamond drill has been used increasingly which are relatively-low durability but easily-adjustable process speed via drill shape change and price is much lower. In this study, the comparison of hole process between PCD and CVD diamond coated drills was done. First of all, CFRP hole processbility was evaluated using the equations of hole processing conditions (feed amount per blade, feed speed). The comparison on thermal damage occurring from the CFRP specimen was also studied during drilling process. Empirical equation was made from the temperature photo profile being taken during hole process by infrared thermal camera. In addition, hole processability was compared by checking hole inside condition upon chip exhausting state for two drills. Generally, although the PCD can exhibit better hole processability, hole processing speed of CVD diamond drill exhibited faster than PCD case.

Numerical Investigation of Flow Structures near Various Nozzle Exit Geometries of the Air Bearing (공기베어링의 노즐 형상 변화에 따른 출구면 근방의 유동구조에 대한 수치해석)

  • To investigate pressure distributions on the shaft surface of the air bearing, the commercial CFD software was employed to study three different nozzle geometries to improve the nozzle performance: general drill-shaped, matched cube-shaped and trimmed exit nozzles. Under the influence of stagnation point, the maximum pressure was observed at the center of shaft surface for all cases. Owing to the blocking effect of a fine gap between the shaft surface and the nozzle exit, the drill-shaped nozzle has the rapid local pressure increase near the nozzle exit corner, generating the ring vortex in the radial direction within pressure ratio of 6.92, and its pressure becomes negative in a certain range of downstream. In comparison, the contoured nozzle showed a local pressure increase in the measured range of pressure ratios, but a negative pressure appeared within the pressure ratio of about 10. The trimmed nozzle was seemed to extend the high pressure zone near the stagnation point in the radial direction substantially, and no negative pressure was appeared in the whole range. Based on these observations, it is found that trimming nozzle exit becomes more effective for improving the performance than modifying the nozzle inside contour.

  • It is widely used in composite materials like several mechanical parts. aerospace industries. internal and structural materials of cars, building structures. ship materials and sporting goods. but it is insufficient to apply in field of mechanical processing. Therefore. GFRP which is possible to use in industrial field was examined about cutting force. tool wear condition of cutting, chip shape. surface roughness and inlet or outlet shape of processing parts with changing cutting condition and using HSS drill which is in vertical machining center in this paper.

A study on DC breakdown strength due to variation of specimen shape of epoxy/SiO$_{2}$ compound material treated with silane coupling agent

  • In order to increase the coupling strength between bisphenol-A type epoxy resin and filler SiO$_{2}$ it was treated to filler with silane coupling agent[KBM-603]. To observe how silane coupling agent effects on dielectric breakdown strength of Epoxy/SiO$_{2}$ compound material, specimens of eight type were made like following. (A-1, A-2), (B-1, B-2), (C-1, C-2), (D-1, D-2) (see 2-2. Specimen) Specimen treated with silane coupling agent had always bigger dielectric breakdown strength than non-treated specimen. Under the influence of silane coupling agent, increment ratio of dielectric breakdown strength at specimen manufactured by hand drill was very bigger than that of specimen inserted spherical electrode. Therefore, as the specimen shape was varied, it was studied on effect that silane coupling agent affects on dielectric breakdown strength of Epoxy/SiO$_{2}$ compound material.

  • Drilling file is medical mini-drill which is made of Ni-Ti material and has tapered shape. It's for removing teeth nervine which helps the endodontic treatment. All files, saled at domestic market, are imported from U.S. and Europe. Also they have low manufacturing efficiency and high price because it is made by universal 5 axis CNC grinding machine. To solve these problem, 3 axis CNC table, controllable tilting angle spindle and helix angle moving table are devised. To confirm divised CNC grinding machine's manufacturing accuracy, conveying amount and finish product size measurement expreiment has been practiced. Also to automate all manufacturing processes, automatic mechanism is designed.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the characteristic of dynamic component in drilling. Materials used were carbon steel, brass and cast iron, and the drills used were high speed steel drill and cemented carbide. The cutting resistance generated in drilling was detected with the aid of piez0-electric tool dynamometer which has an excellent frequency response, and then the magnitude and shape of dynamic component and its frequency component as well were analyuzed. After a thorough study of interrelationship, the obtained results are as follows; 1) The shape of torque and thrust of the early drilling are different. 2) The shapes of dynamic component can be classified into four kinds. 3) Torque is related to frequency more closely than thrust. 4) As cutting speed increased, dynamic component increased. 5) Chipping took place continuously, and its size decreased as cutting proceeded.

  • Drilling chatter is regenerative type self-excited vibration and can be predicted by the measurments of the dynamic compliance between tool and workpiece based on structural dynamics and cutting dynamics. This paper describes the theoretical prediction about drilling chatter and the mechanism of the formation of multi-coner shape in holes by drilling chatter. By the experiments and theoretical study, it is found that the odd number of multi-coner shape is always generated by drilling chatter.

Engineering Geological Implications of Fault Zone in Deep Drill Cores: Microtextural Characterization of Pseudotachylite and Seismic Activity (시추코어 단층대에서의 지질공학적 의미: 슈도타킬라이트의 미세조직의 특징과 지진활동)

  • It is not rare that pseudotachylite, dark colored rock with glassy texture, is recognizable in deep core samples drilled up to 900 m from the surface. Pseudotachylite with widths varying few to 20 cm is sharply contacted or interlayered with the host rocks composed of Jurassic granite and Precambrian amphibolite gneiss, showing moderately ductile deformation or slight folding. Pseudotachylite occurring at varying depths in the deep drill core are slightly different in texture and thickness. There is evidence of fault gouge at shallower depths, although brittle deformation is pervasive in most drill cores and pseudotachylite is identified at random depth intervals. Under scanning electron microscope (SEM), it is evident that the surface of pseudotachylite is characterized by a smooth, glassy matrix even at micrometer scale and there is little residual fragments in the glass matrix except microcrystals of quartz with embayed shape. Such textural evidence strongly supports the idea that the pseudotachylite was generated through the friction melting related to strong seismic events. Based on X-ray diffraction (XRD) quantitative analysis, it consists of primary minerals such as quartz, feldspars, biotite, amphibole and secondary minerals including clay minerals, calcite and glassy materials. Such mineralogical features of fractured materials including pseudotachylite indicate that the fractured zone might form at low temperatures possibly below $300^{\circ}C$, which implies that the seismic activity related to the formation of pseudotachylite took place at shallow depths, possibly at most 10 km. Identification and characterization of pseudotachylite provide insight into a better understanding of the paleoseismic activity of deep grounds and fundamental information on the stability of candidate disposal sites for high-level radioactive waste.

Laser Micro Machining and Electrochemical Etching After Surface Coating (미세 레이저 가공의 표면코팅 후 전해 에칭)

  • Laser beam machining (LBM) is fast, contactless and able to machine various materials. So it is used to cut metal, drill holes, weld or pattern the imprinted surface. However, after LBM, there still leave burrs and recast layers around the machined area. In order to remove these unwanted parts, LBM process often uses electrochemical etching (ECE). But, the total thickness of workpiece is reduced because the etching process removes not only burrs and recast layers, but also the entire surface. In this paper, surface coating was performed using enamel after LBM on metal. The recast layer can be selectively removed without decreasing total thickness. Comparing with LBM process only, the surface quality of enamel coating process was better than that. And edge shape was also maintained after ECE.

Machining Technology of Micro Combustion Nozzle Using a Femtosecond Laser (펨토초 레이저를 이용한 미세 연소노즐 가공 기술)

  • The shape of combustion nozzles varies from large diameter to small diameter ones. In the case of small nozzle, nozzle exit can be easily winkled or damaged in machining process. Femtosecond laser is a micro machining technology that is able to drill a small nozzle without damaging the nozzle exit. In this experiment, a small nozzle of combustion was fabricated by using a femtosecond laser. The fabricated nozzle of combustion provided a very small nozzle diameter with clean nozzle exit without wrinkling or collateral damage.
