  • This research explored the relationship between the water quality issue of Wolji Pond (Anapji Pond) with the maintenance of the channel flow circulation system. The water supply and drainage system closely related to the circulation system of pond has been reviewed, rather than the existing water supply and drainage system that has been analyzed in previous studies. As a result of reviewing the water supply system, it has been learned that the water supply system on the southeastern shore of Wolji Pond, being the current water supply hole, has been connected to the east side garden facility (landscaping stone, curved waterway, storage facility of water) between the north and south fence and the waterway. This separate facility group seems to have been a subject of the investigation of the eastern side of Wolji Pond, with the landscaping stones having been identified in the 1920's survey drawings. The water supply facility on the southeastern shore, being the suspected water supply hole, seems to have some connection with the granite waterway remaining on the building site of Imhaejeon (臨海殿) on the southern side of Wolji Pond. It is inferred that it provides clean water, seeing that the slope towards the southwestern shore of Wolji Pond becomes lower, the landscaping stones have been placed in the filter area, and it is present in the 1920's survey drawings and the water supply hole survey drawing of 1975. The water drainage facility on the northern shore is composed of five stages. The functions of the wooden waterway and the rectangular stone water catchment facility seem not to be only for the water drainage of Wolji Pond. In light of the points that there are wood plugs in the wooden waterway and that there is a water catchment facility in the final stage, it is judged that the water of Balcheon Stream (撥川) may be charged in reverse according to this setup. Namely, the water could enter and exit in either direction in the water drainage facility on the northern shore It also seems that the supply to the wooden waterway could be opened and shut through the water catchment facility of rectangular stone group as well. The water drainage facility on the western shore is very similar to the water drainage facility on the northern shore, so it is difficult to avoid the belief that it existed during the Silla Dynasty, or it has been produced by imitating the water drainage facility on the northern shore at some future point in time. It seems to have functioned as the water drainage facility for the supply of agricultural water during the Joseon Dynasty. The water supply and drainage facilities in Wolji Pond have been understood as a systematized distribution network that has been intertwined organically with the facility of Donggung Palace, which was the center of the Silla capital. Water has been supplied to each facility group, including Wolji Pond, through this structure; it includes the drainage system connecting to the Namcheon River (南川) through the Balcheon Stream, which was an important canal of the capital center.

  • This study is about the applicability of copper slag as the ground improvement material. By the geo-technical characteristics of the copper slag and by the effect of consolidation and under drainage condition, it is proved that the copper slag can be used for ground improvement material as substitution for sand. As a result of laboratory tests, it was shown that the permeability of the copper slag was similar to that of sands under the vertical drainage condition. In addition, the copper slag showed higher critical hydraulic gradient than that of sand under up-ward vertical flow state. The copper slag has potential safety against piping and it has internal stability of particles. The conclusion is that the copper slag is suitable for drainage and filter material.

  • The effects of the calculation method of surface runoff on the estimation of flood in urban drainage basin were analyzed in this study. In comparing with surface runoff methods. RUNOFF, ILLUDAS, SBUH and RRL were investigated. To route the flow in sewer/conduits EXTRAN was applied. The Kings Creek and Gray Haven drainage basin's measured data of rainfall and runoff were used in comparing the computed results. The results show that the greatest effect factor on surface runoff in urban small area is the concentration time. The results estimated by each model which are composed with EXTRAN show that the scheme for surface runoff gives considerable effect on the flood hydrograph in urban drainage system. RUN-EX method gives the most similar simulation results among the surface runoff models, and is more applicable for paved and unpaved basins than others.

  • Background: The superficial lymphatic system is divided into areas called lymphatic territories which are separated by watersheds. When the lymphatic system fails to remove its load either due to surgery, radiotherapy or some congenital malformation of it then the fluid and the proteins and wastes contained within it accumulates in that territory. Anastomotic connections exist across the watersheds and while they can work unaided manual lymph drainage (MLD) can significantly help drainage across them into unaffected lymphatic territories. The purpose of the study is to examine the effectiveness of a manual technique in moving fluids and softening hardened tissues using a tape measure and Patient-Specific Functional Scale. Methods: We examined the movement of fluids from the affected limbs of lymphedema patients who underwent a standardized 30-min treatment using the Dr. Vodder method of MLD. We chose a typical cross section of patients with secondary leg or secondary arm lymphedema. The lymphedema patient was also measured after the conclusion of treatment and underwent a follow-up control measurement, within 8 weeks. Both evaluation tools indicated a movement of fluid to different and unblocked lymphatic territories as well as a softening of tissues in some of the affected limbs. Results: MLD is an effective means of fluid clearance when it accumulates as a consequence of a failure of the lymphatic system. It seems likely that MLD has a systemic effect on the lymphatic system and that it can improve flow from otherwise normal tissues. Conclusions: It is hypothesized that a series of treatments would result in even more significant improvements.

  • Two types of reactor were designed to neutralize acid mine drainage flow from closed mine. Limestone used as a neutralizer, which composed mainly of calcite with small amount of dolomite. In general, the effect of neutralization depended upon both the position of reaction and the amount of supply of neutralizer. It was observed that the neutralization was enhanced as the reaction with acid mine drainage occurred at the upper part of reactor with sufficient supply of neutralizer. When the reaction was sustained in upper part of the reactor, the neutralizer was not affected by precipitates and the reaction could last until all of neutralizer was consumed.

  • Tunnel problems relate to pore water pressure generally occur due to the restriction of groundwater flow into the tunnel which is generally caused by the deterioration of drainage systems. Previous studies have identified the problem as combined mechanical and hydraulic interaction occasions. In this study, detrimental effects of pore water pressure on the lining were investigated using the finite element method considering deterioration of the drainage system. Particularly, double-lined linings with drain-holes are considered. Deterioration of drainage system is represented as blockages of drain-holes. It is identified that the secondary lining ran be influenced by the deterioration of drainage system. It is shown that a tunnel with all drain-holes blocked moved upward, and unbalanced drain-hole blocking may result in torsional behavior of the tunnel which causes significant damages to the secondary linings.

  • A two-way pump can reduce costs by draining and circulating water out and into the drum of the washing machine using a single motor whereas a conventional one-way pump uses two motors for doing the same function. However, when the water is drained through the drainage outlet in the two-way pump casing, a backward or inhalation flow occurs and the water flows to the circulation outlet. Likewise, when the water is circulated, the backward flow or inhalation makes the water flow to the drainage outlet. In this study, design optimization of the two-way pump casing is performed to maximize its performance while improving backward flow and inhalation occurring inside of the pump casing. For this, design variables of the pump casing that mainly affect the performance of the pump such as flow rate and torque of the motor were selected through the analysis of mean. Using response surface models for the performances, the ratio of the flow rate to the torque was maximized with satisfying the constraints for the back flow and inhalation through design optimization.

  • Integrated numerical approaches with physically-based conceptualization are required for accurate urban inundation simulation. In this study, we described, applied and analyzed an integrated 1-dimensional (1D) sewerage system and 2-dimensional (2D) surface flow model, which was suggested by Lee et al. (2015). This model was developed based on dual-drainage concept, and uses storm drains as an discharge exchange spot rather than manholes so that interaction phenomena between surface flow and sewer pipe flow are physically reproduced. In addition, the building block concept which prevents inflows from outside structures is applied in order to consider building effects. The capability of the model is demonstrated via reproducing the past flooding event at the Sadang-cheon River catchment, Seoul, South Korea. The results show the plausible causes of the inundation could be analysed in detail by integrated 1D-2D modeling.

  • Combined sewer overflows(CSOs) are themselves a significant source of water pollution. Therefore, the control of urban drainage for CSOs reduction and receiving water quality protection is needed. Examples in combined sewer systems include downstream storage facilities that detain runoff during periods of high flow and allow the detained water to be conveyed by an interceptor sewer to a centralized treatment plant during periods of low flow. The design of such facilities as stormwater detention storage is highly dependant on the temporal variability of storage capacity available(which is influenced by the duration of interevent dry periods) as well as the infiltration capacity of soil and recovery of depression storage. As a result, a contiunous approach is required to adequately size such facilities. This study for the continuous long-term analysis of urban dranage system used analytical Probabilistic model based on derived probability distribution theory. As an alternative to the modeling of urban drainage system for planning or screening level analysis of runoff control alternatives, this model have evolved that offer much ease and flexibility in terms of computation while considering long-term meteorology. This study presented rainfall and runoff characteristics or the subject area using analytical Probabilistic model. Runoff characteristics manifasted the unique characteristics of the subject area with the infiltration capacity of soil and recovery of depression storage and was examined appropriately by sensitivity analysis. This study presented the average annual COSs and number of COSs when the interceptor capacity is in the range 3xDWF(dry weather flow). Also, calculated the average annual mass of pollutant lost in CSOs using Event Mean Concentration. Finally, this study presented a dicision of storage volume for CSOs reduction and water quality protection.

  • From the direct outflow of Chungju Dam to the junction of water body and watershed in Paldang lake is the scope of this research. This study performed to investigate the main cause of water quality deterioration and the influenced region in the middle field range of the Namhan river Basin with the onsite measurement of water quality and flow rate simultaneously during spring dry season. The purpose of this study is to find out the time-spatial variation characteristics of water quality and flow rate. Following the flow direction $BOD_5$ and $COD_{Mn}$ concentration increased to the highest value of 3.7 mg/L, 5.9 mg/L at Wolgesa respectively. Chl.a concentration increased to $50mg/m^3$ or so at Kangsang, after that it decreased to $37mg/m^3$ at the junction of Paldang lake. Organic matter concentration variation trend showed similar than that of Chl.a. Also $BOD_5$ concentration tendency was similar to Chl.a in every measuring sites except Paldang lake mixing zone. The major factors of water quality deterioration in Namhan river and Paldang lake during dry season were algal bloom and followed internal production. High phosphorus load from Dalcheon and Seom river caused dry season algal bloom and internal production in transitional zone which was stagnant area in downstream of Namhan river.
