  • A physically based model for rainfall runoff simulation in agricultural watershed equipped with tile drains is presented. This model is developed from the TOPMODEL which is based on the detailed topographic information provided by Digital Elevation Model (DEM). Nine possible flow generation scenarios in the tile drained basin are suggested and used in the development of the model. The model can identify the portions of the hydrograph resulting from tile flow, subsurface flow and surface flow. The performance of the model is assessed through a calibration and validation process. The results of the analysis show that the model describes the physical system well and provides a better insight into the hillslope hydrology of agricultural watersheds with tile drainage.

  • By Using MOS-1 satellite image(taken on 24 April 1990, after slash and burn), Shifting cultivation areas were estimated for the sub-basin area. In tropical region to analyse the correlation between shifting cultivation rate and bifurcation rate network which was calculated from topographic map, PC Arc - Info and IDRISI GIS software were used. As the distribution rate of shifting cultivation increases, the bifurcation rate is high. From the correlation analysis between the shifting cultivation and drainage network, it was found that shifting cultivation leads to land degradation and head erosion at the stream valley. To prevent such problems, it is mecessary that shifting cultivation areas should be converted to permanent paddy fields.

  • Due to the climate change and various rainfall pattern, it is difficult to estimate a rainfall criterion which cause inundation for urban drainage districts. It is necessary to examine the result of inundation analysis by considering the detailed topography of the watershed, drainage system, and various rainfall scenarios. In this study, various rainfall scenarios were considered with the probabilistic rainfall and Huff's time distribution method in order to identify the rainfall characteristics affecting the inundation of the Hyoja drainage basin. Flood analysis was performed with SWMM and two-dimensional inundation analysis model and the parameters of SWMM were optimized with flood trace map and GA (Genetic Algorithm). By linking SWMM and two-dimensional flood analysis model, the fitness ratio between the existing flood trace and simulated inundation map turned out to be 73.6 %. The occurrence of inundation according to each rainfall scenario was identified, and the rainfall criterion could be estimated through the logistic regression method. By reflecting the results of one/two dimensional flood analysis, and AWS/ASOS data during 2010~2018, the rainfall criteria for inundation occurrence were estimated as 72.04 mm, 146.83 mm, 203.06 mm in 1, 2 and 3 hr of rainfall duration repectively. The rainfall criterion could be re-estimated through input of continuously observed rainfall data. The methodology presented in this study is expected to provide a quantitative rainfall criterion for urban drainage area, and the basic data for flood warning and evacuation plan.

  • Geochemical data of the Han river water, including four tributary water samples in the main Han river are presented in this paper. The concentration of dissolved ions in the North Han river water decreases in order of Ca>Na>K>Mg and HCO$_3$>NO$_3$>SO$_4$>Cl, which it mainly affected by the chemical weathering of granite and gneiss in the drainage basin. Meanwhile, the South Han river water shows a decreasing order of Ca>Mg>Na>K and HCO$_3$>SO$_4$>NO$_3$>Cl, which is controlled by the bed rock geology of carbornate rooks and the inflow of acid mine drainage from the metal and coal mines in the Taebaegsan and Hwanggangri areas. The main Han river waters are characterized by unusually high concentration of Na, Cl and SO$_4$ (Ca>Na>K>Mg and HCO$_3$>SO$_4$>CI>NO), indicating a significant anthropogenic pollution by human activities in the metropolitan Seoul city. The geochemical data of the Han river waters from 1981 through 1996 to 1999 records a significant increase in SO$_4$ and NO$_3$, which responsible for the increasing arid mane drainage and municipal anthropogenic pollution.

  • The rainfall-runoff model made of sewer networks in the urban area is vast and complex, making it unsuitable for real-time urban flood forecasting. Therefore, the rainfall-runoff model is constructed and simplified using the sewer network of Daerim baisn. The network simplification process was composed of 5 steps based on cumulative drainage area and all parameters of SWMM were calculated using weighted area. Also, in order to estimate the optimal simplification range of the sewage network, runoff and flood analysis was carried out by 5 simplification ranges. As a result, the number of nodes, conduits and the simulation time were constantly reduced to 50~90% according to the simplification ranges. The runoff results of simplified models show the same result before the simplification. In the 2D flood analysis, as the simplification range increases by cumulative drainage area, the number of overflow nodes significantly decreased and the positions were changed, but similar flooding pattern was appeared. However, in the case of more than 6 ha cumulative drainage area, some inundation areas could not be occurred because of deleted nodes from upstream. As a result of comparing flood area and flood depth, it was analyzed that the flood result based on simplification range of 1 ha cumulative drainage area is most similar to the analysis result before simplification. It is expected that this study can be used as reliable data suitable for real-time urban flood forecasting by simplifying sewer network considering SWMM parameters.

  • At present, summer cloudburst and local torrential rainfalls have increased in this country, because of climatic change. Therefore, studies on prevention of soil loss have been actively proceeded, and Korea Forest Service has offered landslide hazard map. Landslide hazard map divides risks into 5 classes, by giving weight with 9 kinds of elements. In August 25 2014, soil loss occurred in the whole Oryun Tunnel, Geumjeong-gu, Busan, because of local torrential heavy rain. As a result of comparing with landslide hazard map, the area where soil loss occurred in reality is a safety zone on hazard map. Rainfall, soil map, geological map, forest type map, gradient, drainage network, watershed, basin shape, and efflux of the whole Oryun Tunnel where soil loss occurred were analyzed. As a result of an analysis, it is judged that soil, forest type, much efflux and peak discharge, degree of water network and basin shape of a place where landslide occurred are causes of soil loss. It is judged that efflux, peak discharge, and basin shape by the localized rainfall that is not considered in landslide hazard map of them are the biggest causes of soil loss. It is judged that efflux, peak discharge, degree of water network and basin shape by the rainfall are important through a study on a causual analysis on soil loss in the whole Oryun Tunnel where is one of occurrence area where a lot of propertywere lost by the record local torrential rainfalls. A localized torrential downpour should be prepared by considering these elements on judgement of a landslide hazard area.

  • A contact oxidation canal system with sedimentation basin was installed to study the efficiency of water quality purification. The primary sedimentation basin with 60 min of HRT (Hydraulic Retention Time) included in the system was aimed to sediment pollutants in the water and the deposit being released by the drainage culvert located at the bottom of the system. The oxidation canal aerated by nozzle was to contact the pollutants and oxygen in the surface of plastic filter to purify the water. Discharge, HRT, length of the oxidation canal were $200\;m^3/day$, 90 min, 20 m, respectively. The treatment efficiency of total nitrogen was lower compared with other water quality items such as SS, BOD, TP because the anoxic condition for denitrification was not ensured after the oxidation canal. However, $25%{\sim}89.6%$ of SS, $75.0%{\sim}91.5%$ of BOD, $44.3%{\sim}95.3%$ of TP were removed in this system. Overall, the results indicates that this system appears to have a potential capability for water quality improvement of the reservoirs or the canals in the agricultural watershed.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the urban hydrologic state by the use of GIS, resolution and interpolation. The determination coefficient($R^2$) and Regression Formula were derived from the contour of digital map for the accuracy, and DEM data was made by using TIN interpolation by the size of the grid. By using the observed DEM data, topographical factors were extracted from the small basin, size, the width of a basin and the slope, and were applied in the urban runoff model. Through the model, we tried to find out the most suitable runoff model in a small basin of Yosu-Munsu area. As a result of applying models to the drainage considered, the runoff hydrograph estimated by SWMM model was closer to the observed one than that estimated by ILLUDAS model. The difference between the runoff hydrograph by SWMM and the observed one is maximum error of 19%, minimum error of 5% and average error of 13%. The influence of duration in contrast to pick time is insignificant in a urban small basin. As a conclusion of this study, SWMM model was more suitable and applicable for the urban runoff model than ILLUDAS model due to its accuracy and various abilities.

  • The flood forecasting model currently used in Korea calculates the runoff of basin using the lumped rainfall-runoff model and estimates the river level using the river and reservoir routing models. The lumped model assumes homogeneous drainage zones in the basin. Therefore, it can not consider various spatial characteristics in the basin. In addition, the rainfall data used in lumped model also has the same limitation because of using the point scale rainfall data. To overcome the limitations as mentioned above, many researchers have studied to apply the distributed rainfall-runoff model to flood forecasting system. In this study, to apply the Grid-based Rainfall-Runoff Model (GRM) to the Korean flood forecasting system, the optimal resolution is determined by analyzing the difference of the results of the runoff according to the various resolutions. If the grid size is to small, the computation time becomes excessive and it is not suitable for applying to the flood forecasting model. Even if the grid size is too large, it does not fit the purpose of analyzing the spatial distribution by applying the distributed model. As a result of this study, the optimal resolution which satisfies the accuracy of the bsin runoff prediction and the calculation speed suitable for the flood forecasting was proposed. The accuracy of the runoff prediction was analyzed by comparing the Nash-Sutcliffe model efficiency coefficient (NSE). The optimal resolution estimated from this study will be used as basic data for applying the distributed rainfall-runoff model to the flood forecasting system.
