  • In the re-entry control system, errors apt to induce because the time derivative of drag acceleration is analytically estimated. Still more, the difficulty of estimation of the exact drag coefficient in hypersonic velocity and the nun-reality of the scale height cause a steady-state drag error. This paper proposes the additional method of the disturbance observer. This reduces the steady-state drag error according to the following series. First, this method estimates a error in drag acceleration time derivative by the analytic calculation and then creates the new drag acceleration time derivative using the estimated error. The performance of the re-entry control system is verified about 32 reference trajectories.

  • During the aircraft conceptual design stage, rapid aerodynamic analyses over various configurations are required. Hence, empirical and analytical methods play important roles in predicting the aero-dynamic characteristics. In this study, total drag estimation method based on empirical and analytical approaches is developed. By comparing with the results of the wind tunnel experiment and existing prediction methods, it is demonstrated that the developed method is accurate and useful in predicting total drag for the whole Mach number range.

  • This paper presents a new estimation method of full scale propulsive performance for the pulling type podded propeller. In order to estimate the drag of pod housing, a drag velocity ratio, which includes the effects of podded propeller loading and Reynolds number, is presented and evaluated through the comparison of model test and numerical analysis. By separating the thrust of propeller blade and the drag of pod housing, extrapolation method of pod housing drag to full scale is deduced, and correction method of propeller blade thrust and torque to full scale is presented. This study utilized the drag coefficient ratio of the pod housing as a measure for expanding it to full scale, but in order to increase the accuracy of performance evaluation, additional study is necessary on the method for the full scale expansion via separating the drag of pod body, strut and fin which consist the pod housing.

  • In this paper, a simple practical method to estimate the drag of Super-Cavitating Underwater Vehicles (SCUV) is proposed that can obtain the drag with only principal dimensions in an initial design stage. SCUV is divided into cavitator, forebody, afterbody, base, and control fin and the drag of each part is estimated. The formulas for the drag coefficient are proposed for the disk and cone type cavitators and wedges used as control fins. The formulas are a function of cavitation number, cone or wedge angle, and Reynolds number. This method can confirm the drag characteristics of SCUV that the drag hump appears according to the coverage of the body by the cavity and the cavitator drag remains only when the entire body is covered by cavity. Applying this method to SCUV of various shapes, it is confirmed that the effects of cavitating and non-cavitating conditions, cavitator and body shape, and speed could be found.

  • A method for estimating the NORAD SGP4 atmospheric drag term from minimum osculating orbit states, i.e., two osculating orbits, is developed. The first osculating orbit state is converted into the NORAD TLE-type mean orbit state by iterative procedure. Then the converted TLE is propagated to the second orbit state using the SGP4 model with the incremental SGP4 drag term. The iterative orbit propagation procedure is finished when the difference of the two osculating semi-major axes between the propagated orbit and the given second orbit is minimized. In order to minimize the effect of the short-term variations of the osculating semi-major axis, the osculating argument of latitude of the second orbit is propagated to the same argument of latitude of the first orbit. The method is applied to the estimation of the NORAD-type TLE for the KOMPSAT-1 spacecraft. The SGP4 drag terms are estimated from both NORAD SGP4 orbit propagation and the numerical orbit propagation results. Variations of the estimated drag terms are analyzed for the KOMPSAT-1 satellite orbit determination results.

  • In the high lift devices specifications for surface smoothness requirements, as manufacturing tolerances, arise out of aerodynamic consideration to minimize drag. True optimization of tolerances is a multi-disciplinary problem involving fluid mechanics, device performance, manufacturing philosophy and life cycle costing. One of the reasons for degradation of wetted surface is discrete roughness as a consequence of manufacturing defects, collectively termed as one of the excrescences effect. Usually, excrescence drag arising out of discrete roughness is of considerable lower order of magnitude as compared to the total drag of the flight bodies. Nor was there adequate predicting tool to account for the extent of drag degradation. Estimation of excrescence drag remained as a state-of-the art based on experimental results.

  • A general investifation into the physical mechanism that is respinsible for drag above the sea surface has been undertaken. On the basis of a ID model of the Wave Boundary Layer(WBL), under a 2D wave field, a parameterization technique for estimation of the drag and mean characteristics of WBL is described. Special attention is paid to estimation of the simplifying assumption of the theory.

  • The efforts of formulation have been reviewed and the results of existing laboratory experiments are investigated in order to describe the contracted flow which occurs at the final closure of sea dike construction. The regional characteristics of contracted flow is analyzed by checking the drawdown curve, and Chezy's mean velocity equation is employed to estimate the discharge rate at the closure. Weir-type discharge equations are reviewed, which are derived from Bernoulli equation, and the problems of the equations are discussed. Chezy's mean velocity equation is considered to be widely and generally applicable, and the empirical factor introduced in Chezy's equation is named 'form drag factor' since it is primarily dependent on the form drag caused by the contraction of discharge area. Laboratory experiments were conducted mainly in order to investigate the variation of form drag factor against various parameters, and an empirical equation is developed for the estimation of form drag factor.
