  • The design of a scramjet inlet is a process to search global optimization results among those factors influencing the geometry of scramjet in their ranges for some requirements. An optimization algorithm of hybrid genetic algorithm based on genetic algorithm and simplex algorithm was established for this purpose. With the sample provided by a uniform method, the compressive angles which also are wedge angles of the inlet were chosen as the inlet design variables, and the drag coefficient, total pressure recovery coefficient, pressure rising ratio and the combination of these three variables are designed specifically as different optimization objects. The contrasts of these four optimization results show that the hybrid genetic algorithm developed in this paper can capably implement the optimization process effectively for the inlet design and demonstrate some good adaptability.

  • This work deals with designing the aircraft wing and simulating the flow behavior on it to determine the aerodynamically efficient wing design. A NACA 4412 airfoil is used to design the base wing model. A wing with a rectangular planform and the one with curved leading edge planform was designed such that their surface areas are the same. Then, a comprehensive flow analysis is carried out at various velocities and angle of attacks using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and the results were interpreted and compared with the experimental values. This study shows that there is a significant improvement in the aerodynamic performance of the curved leading edge wing over the wing with rectangular planform.

  • The new aerofoil, KA2 was designed to apply to the wind turbine blade. For the aerofoil, numerical analysis was performed to review aerodynamic characteristics like lift and drag coefficient. And they are verified with test data using the digital wind tunnel and test samples from 3D printer. The digital wind tunnel was developed to test wing in the small laboratory, and verified with test of NACA0012 airfoil. KA2 aerofoil is asymmetric, and has the thickness ratio of 14%, and 12 degree of AOA at the maximum lift coefficient of 1.3. In this paper, aerodynamic characteristics from numerical and test approaches will be proposed with AOA in detail. Therefore, this aerofoil will be used for the design of wind turbine blade.

  • This paper presents a theoretical method to deal with the aerodynamic performance and pitch optimization of the horizontal axis wind turbine blades at low wind speeds. By considering a blade element, the functional relationship among the angle of attack, pitch angle, rotational speed of the blade, and wind speed is derived in consideration of a quasi-steady aerodynamic model, and aerodynamic loads on the blade element are then obtained. The torque and torque coefficient of the blade are derived by using integration. A polynomial approximation is applied to functions of the lift and drag coefficients for the symmetric and asymmetric airfoils respectively, where specific expressions of aerodynamic loads as functions of the angle of attack (which is a function of pitch angle) are obtained. The pitch optimization problem is investigated by considering the maximum value problem of the instantaneous torque of a blade as a function of pitch angle. Dynamic pitch laws for HAWT blades with either symmetric or asymmetric airfoils are derived. Influences of parameters including inflow ratio, rotational speed, azimuth, and wind speed on torque coefficient and optimal pith angle are discussed.

  • This study performed numerical simulation to elucidate the characteristics of flow past a rectangular cylinder with various values of the aspect ratio(AR) of the cylinder. We calculated the flow field, force coefficients and Strouhal number of vortex shedding depending on the Reynolds number(Re) and the aspect ratio. The $AR{\approx}1$ is preferred for drag reduction, and 0.375$AR{\approx}0$ is recommended if suppression of the lift-coefficient fluctuation and the shedding frequency is desirable. Furthermore the criticality of the Hopf bifurcation is also reported for each AR.

  • We investigate two-dimensional laminar flow around rectangular cylinders placed in a uniform stream. Numerical simulations are performed, using finite volume method, in the ranges of $50{\leq}Re{\leq}150$ and $0.1{\leq}W/H{\leq}1.0$, where Re and W/H are the Reynolds number and the width-to-height ratio, respectively. The immersed boundary method is used to handle the rectangular cylinder in a rectangular grid system. Comparisons with the previous results show good agreement in Strouhal number, drag and lift coefficient. The present study reports the detailed information of flow structure at different width-to-height ratios in the ranges of $50{\leq}Re{\leq}150$.

  • In wind tunnel experiments, the blockage effect is a very important factor which affects the test results significantly. A number of investigations into this problem, especially on the blockage correction of drag coefficient, have been carried out in the past. However, only a limited number of works have been reported on the wind tunnel blockage effect on wind-induced vibration although it is considered to be fairly important. This paper discusses the aerodynamic characteristics of the square model and square model with corner cut based on a series of the wind tunnel tests with various blockage ratios and angles of attack. From the test results, the aerodynamic behavior of square models with up to 10% blockage ratio are almost the same and square models with up to 10% blockage ratio can be tested as a group which behaves similarly.

  • An aerodynamic design tool was developed for small wind turbine blades based on the blade element momentum theory. The lift and drag coefficients of blades that are needed for aerodynamic blade design were obtained in real time from the Xfoil program developed at University of Illinois. While running, the developed tool automatically accesses the Xfoil program, runs it with proper aerodynamic and airfoil properties, and finally obtains lift and drag coefficients. The obtained aerodynamic coefficients are then used to find out optimal twist angles and chord lengths of the airfoils. The developed tool was used to design a wind turbine blade using low Reynolds number airfoils, SG6040 and SG6043 to have its maximum power coefficient at a specified tip speed ratio. The performance of the blade was verified by a commercial code well known for its prediction accuracies.

  • Wind tunnel tests and numerical aerodynamic analyses were conducted for an integrated catwalk structure under strong winds. From the wind tunnel tests, it is found that the aerodynamic coefficients were different from those of the typical type. The drag coefficient was larger than typical and was sensitive to number of vertical meshes installed rather than the solidity ratio. Comparing with typical catwalk, the integrated one showed larger deformation under strong wind, and the large torsional deformation are mainly caused by drag force. It did not show aerodynamic divergence even the torsional deformation reaching $20^{\circ}$. The reason could be that the stiffness is smaller and thus the catwalk is able to deform to the shape compactable with higher loading. Considering safety for construction, storm rope system is introduced to the catwalk to reduce the deformation to acceptable level.
