Large Eddy Simulation of Flow around Twisted Offshore Structure with Drag Reduction and Vortex Suppression (와류감쇠 및 저항저감형 나선형 해양 구조물 주위 유동 LES 해석)

  • A twisted cylinder has been newly designed by rotating the elliptic cross section along the spanwise direction in order to reduce the drag and vorticies in wake region. The flow around the twisted cylinder at a subcritical Reynolds number (Re) of 3000 is investigated to analyze the effect of twisted spiral pattern on the drag reduction and vortex suppression using large eddy simulation (LES). The instantaneous wake structures of the twisted cylinder are compared with those of a circular and a wavy cylinder at the same Re. The shear layer of the twisted cylinder covering the recirculation region is more elongated than that of the circular and the wavy cylinder. Successively, vortex shedding of the twisted cylinder is considerably suppressed, compared with those of the circular and the wavy cylinder. Consequently, the mean drag coefficient and the fluctuating lift of the twisted cylinder are less than those of the circular and the wavy cylinder.

Characteristic calculations of flowfield around a square prism having a detached splitter plate using vortex method (와법을 이용한 분리된 분할판을 가진 정방형주의 유동장 특성계산)

  • The characteristics of the unsteady flowfield of a square prism having a detached splitter plate at the wake side were investigated by advanced vortex method. The instantaneous and average velocity field and pressure field around a square prism without and having splitter plate were calculated by forcing the gap ratio having the maximum drag reduction rate, at Reynolds number $Re=1.0{\times}10^4$ and the width ratio H/B=1.0 of splitter to the prism width. The drag and lift coefficients on the square prism were also obtained. The calculated results agree with the measured drag coefficients and pressure distributions on the square prism. The vortices of the opposite direction at upside and down side of the splitter plate were generated by installing of the plate. And the drag on the square prism was decreased by increasing of the pressure of back face of the prism with the vortices.

Flow and Structural Response Characteristics of a Box-type Artificial Reef (상자형 어초의 흐름 및 구조응답 특성)

  • We carried out flow and structural response analysis of a box-type artificial reef (AR), which is made of concrete and structural steel. From the flow analysis, the wake region and drag coefficient were evaluated and accordingly, the structural analysis was performed to evaluate the stress and deformation of the target reef by considering the pressure field obtained from the flow analysis. The concept of wake volume was presented to quantitatively estimate the wake region and its variation according to flow direction and velocity. From the results, it is shown that the flow responses are only sensitive to the flow direction; the structural responses are sensitive to both of the flow velocity and direction although the magnitudes are negligible; and the wake volume became 3.52 times the AR volume with an optimum installation condition ($30^{\circ}$, flow direction) of the target unit.

Development of a Surface Shape for the Heat Transfer Enhancement and Reduction of Pressure Loss in an Internal Cooling Passage (내부 냉각유로에서 열전달 강화와 압력손실 감소를 위한 표면 형상체의 개발)

  • A new surface shape of an internal cooling passage which largely reduces the pressure drop and enhances the surface heat transfer is proposed in the present study. The surface shape of the cooling passage is consisted of the concave dimple and the riblet inside the dimple which is protruded along the stream-wise direction. Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) for the fully developed turbulent flow and thermal fields in the cooling passage is conducted. The numerical simulations for five different surface shapes are conducted at the Reynolds number of 2800 based on the mean bulk velocity and channel height and Prandtl number of 0.71. The driving pressure gradient is adjusted to keep a constant mass flow rate in the x direction. The thermoaerodynamic performance for five different cases used in the present study was assessed in terms of the drag, Nusselt number, Fanning friction factor, volume and area goodness factor in the cooling passage. The value of maximum ratio of drag reduction is -22.86 %, and the value of maximum ratio of Nusselt number augmentation is 7.05% when the riblet angle is $60^{\circ}$. The remarkable point is that the ratio of Nusselt number augmentation has the positive value for the surface shapes which have over $45^{\circ}$ of the riblet angle. The maximum volume and area goodness factors are obtained when the riblet angle is $60^{\circ}$.

Laminar Flow past a Sphere Rotating in the Transverse Direction (횡 방향으로 회전하는 구 주위의 유동특성)

  • Numerical simulations are conducted for laminar flow past a sphere rotating In the transverse direction, in order to investigate the effect of the rotation on the characteristics of flow over a sphere. The Reynolds numbers considered are Re=100, 250 and 300 based on the free-stream velocity and the sphere diameter, and the rotational speeds are in the range of $0{\leq}{\omega}{\leq}1$, where ${\omega}^{\ast}$ is the maximum velocity on the sphere surface normalized by the free-stream velocity. At ${\omega}^{\ast}=0$ (without rotation), the flow past the sphere experiences steady axisymmeoy, steady planar-symmetry and unsteady planar-symmetry, respectively, at Re=100, 250 and 300. However, with rotation, the flow becomes planar-symmetric for all the cases investigated and the symmetry plane is orthogonal to the axis of the rotation. The flow is also steady or unsteady depending on both the Reynolds number and the rotational speed, and the vortical structures behind the sphere are significantly modified by the rotation. For example, at Re=300, hairpin vortices completely disappear in the wake at ${\omega}^{\ast}=0.4\;and\;0.6$, and at ${\omega}^{\ast}=1$ vortical structures of a high frequency are newly generated due to the shear layer instability. It is also shown that with increasing rotational speed, the time-averaged drag and lift coefficients increase monotonically.

Mean wind loads on T-shaped angle transmission towers

  • Compared with traditional transmission towers, T-shaped angle towers have long cross-arms and are specially used for ultrahigh-voltage direct-current (UHVDC) transmission. Nevertheless, the wind loads of T-shaped towers have not received much attention in previous studies. Consequently, a series of wind tunnel tests on the T-shaped towers featuring cross-arms of varying lengths were conducted using the high-frequency force balance (HFFB) technique. The test results reveal that the T-shaped tower's drag coefficients nearly remain constant at different testing velocities, demonstrating that Reynolds number effects are negligible in the test range of 1.26 × 104-2.30 × 104. The maximum values of the longitudinal base shear and torsion of the T-shaped tower are reached at 15° and 25° of wind incidence, respectively. In the yaw angle, the crosswind coefficients of the tower body are quite small, whereas those of the cross-arms are significant, and as a result, the assumption in some load codes (such as ASCE 74-2020, IEC 60826-2017 and EN 50341-1:2012) that the resultant force direction is the same as the wind direction may be inappropriate for the cross-arm situation. The fitting formulas for the wind load-distribution factors of the tower body and cross-arms are developed, respectively, which would greatly facilitate the determination of the wind loads on T-shaped angle towers.

Geological Structure around Andong Fault System, Pungcheon-myeon, Andong, Korea (안동시 풍천면 안동단층계 주변의 지질구조)

  • The Pungcheon-myeon, Andong, consists mainly of Precambrian metamorphic rocks, Jurassic igneous rocks, Cretaceous sedimentary rocks (Hasandong, Jinju and Iljik Formations) and Cretaceous igneous rocks (gabbroic rocks, dykes), in which several major faults are developed; Andong fault of ENE trend, which is the boundary fault of the Cretaceous Gyeongsang Basin and the Precambrian-Jurassic basement (Yeongnam Massif), Namhu fault parallel to it, Maebong fault of NNW direction, bow-shaped Gwangdeok fault of ENE direction which is convex toward SSE direction, and Hahoe fault of NNE direction. This paper is researched the geological structures around these major faults by means of the detailed geometric analysis on beddings, joints, faults and drag folds. As a result, a reverse slip faulting of top-to-the SSE movement accompanied with a regional drag folding is recognized from the arrangement of bedding poles measured around the Gwangdeok and Hahoe faults at its northeastern extension, and a zone of Gwangdeok drag fold of 150-300 m width, which is wider at the central and eastern parts of Gwangdeok fault and narrower at its western part and Hahoe fault, is also defined. It indicates that the Hahoe and Gwangdeok faults are a single fault and their movements are coeval unlike the results of earlier reasearchers. And, In this area are recognized two types of faults [(E)NE${\sim}$EW(fault I), WNW${\sim}$NNW (fault II), trending faults] and four types of joints [EW (I), (N)NW (II), NNE (III), NE (IV) trending joints]. These fractures were formed at least through four different events, named as Dn to Dn+3 phases. (1) Dn phase; the formation of joint (I) (Gwangdeok joint) and the intrusion of acidic dykes of EW trend under the compression of EW direction. (2) Dn+1 phase; the formations of joint (II) (Maebong joint), lens-shaped boudinage of acidic dykes, oblique-slip reverse fault (Fault I-Gwangdeok fault) under the compression of (N)NW direction, and the formation of regional zone of Gwangdeok drag fold accompanying the Gwangdeok faulting. (3) Dn+2 phase; those of joint (III), Fault II (Maebong fault) by dextral strike-slip movement of Maebong joint under the compression of NNE direction, and the extension cutting of Dn+1 structures due to the Maebong faulting. (4) Dn+3 phase; the jointing (IV) and the reactivation of Fault II as oblique-slip type with predominant dextral motion which took place under the compression of NE direction. It also suggests that the Maebong fault is not a tear fault deveolped during thrust tectonics of the Andong and Gwangdeok faults but is a post-fault during different tectonic event.

A Study for Aerodynamic Drag Reduction on Variable Message Sign using Flow Analysis (유동해석 기반 도로전광표지 공기저항 저감 구조 연구)

  • As the demand of Variable Message Sign(VMS) has become pervasive in fulfilling the ITS policy, the costs of maintaining the Variable Message Sign operation have also increased. This paper proposes the U-curved figure, the C-curved figure and the ventilated figure type for aerodynamic drag reduction on Variable Message Sign and shows the analysis of aerodynamic drag effects using Flow Analysis. As a results of the flow analysis for right-angled, 45 degrees from side to side and 45 degrees from up or down, the C-curved figure and the ventilated figure type show about 30% aerodynamic drag reduction in all direction. And the U-curved figure type shows vivid aerodynamic drag reduction for right-angled and 45 degree from side to side, but trivial aerodynamic drag reduction for 45 degree from up or down. It is possible to reduce not only the damage on Variable Message Sign due to typhoon because of the aerodynamic drag reduction, but also installation constraints because of lighter Variable Message Sign support structure by appling the proposed structure and analysis in this paper.

Lock-in and drag amplification effects in slender line-like structures through CFD

  • Lock-in and drag amplification phenomena are studied for a flexible cantilever using a simplified fluid-structure interaction approach. Instead of solving the 3D domain, a simplified setup is devised, in which 2D flow problems are solved on a number of planes parallel to the wind direction and transversal to the structure. On such planes, the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations are solved to estimate the fluid action at different positions of the line-like structure. The fluid flow on each plane is coupled with the structural deformation at the corresponding position, affecting the dynamic behaviour of the system. An Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) approach is used to take in account the deformation of the domain, and a fractional-step scheme is used to solve the fluid field. The stabilization of incompressibility and convection is achieved through orthogonal quasi-static subscales, an approach that is believed to provide a first step towards turbulence modelling. In order to model the structural problem, a special one-dimensional element for thin walled cross-section beam is implemented. The standard second-order Bossak method is used for the time integration of the structural problem.
