Nowadays Climate disasters are frequently happening due to occasional occurrences of EI Nino and La Nina events and among them, water shortage is one of the serious problems. To cope with this problem, climate model simulations can give very helpful information. To utilize the climate model for enhancing the water resources planning techniques, probabilistic measures of the effectiveness of global climate model (GCM) simulations of an indicator variable for discriminating high versus low regional observations of a target variable are proposed in this study. The objective of this study is to present the various analysis methods to find the suitable application methods of GCM information for Korean water resources planning. The basic formulation uses the significance probability of the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test for detecting differences between two variables. The various methods for adopting correct association, changing the window size, discrimination condition, and the use of temporally down scaled data were proposed to find out the suitable way for Korean water resources planning.

Multiple earthquakes that occur during short seismic intervals affect the inelastic behavior of the structures. Sequential ground motions against the single earthquake event cause the building structure to face loss in stiffness and its strength. Although, numerous research studies had been conducted in this research area but still significant limitations exist such as: 1) use of traditional design procedure which usually considers single seismic excitation; 2) selecting a seismic excitation data based on earthquake events occurred at another place and time. Therefore, it is important to study the effects of successive ground motions on the framed structures. The objective of this study is to overcome the aforementioned limitations through testing a two storey RC building structural model scaled down to 1/10 ratio through a similitude relation. The scaled model is examined using a shaking table. Thereafter, the experimental model results are validated with simulated results using ETABS software. The test framed specimen is subjected to sequential five artificial and four real-time earthquake motions. Dynamic response history analysis has been conducted to investigate the i) observed response and crack pattern; ii) maximum displacement; iii) residual displacement; iv) Interstorey drift ratio and damage limitation. The results of the study conclude that the low-rise building model has ability to resist successive artificial ground motion from its strength. Sequential artificial ground motions cause the framed structure to displace each storey twice in correlation with vary first artificial seismic vibration. The displacement parameters showed that real-time successive ground motions have a limited impact on the low-rise reinforced concrete model. The finding shows that traditional seismic design EC8 requires to reconsider the traditional design procedure.
A steam generator tube rupture accompanying a core damage may cause the fission product to be released to environment bypassing the containment. In such an accident, the steam generator is the major path of the radioactive aerosol release. AEOLUS facility, the scaled-down model of Korean type steam generator, was built to examine the aerosol removal in the steam generator during the steam generator tube rupture accident. Integral and separate effect tests were performed with the facility for the dry and flooded conditions, and the decontamination factors were presented for different tube configurations and submergences. The dry test results were compared with the existing test results and with the analyses to investigate the aerosol retention physics by the tube bundle, with respect to the particle size and the bundle geometry. In the flooded tests, the effect of submergence were shown and the retention in the jet injection region were presented with respect to the Stokes number. The test results are planned to be used to constitute the aerosol retention model, specifically applicable for the analysis of the steam generator tube rupture accident in Korean nuclear power plants to evaluate realistic fission product behavior.
This study is aimed at figuring out the reasons of the mass mortality of abalone and the increase in its mortality rate in the sea cage. The study suggests that lack seawater circulation in an abalone aquaculture cage is an important culprit for it. We analyzed the current distribution around a 1/20 scaled-down abalone unit cage of 4 rows and 10 columns by fluid flow visualization technique (PIV : Particle Image Velocimetry). The speed of current in the model cage definitely slowed down in the first column of a unit cage. We also observed currents going down to the bottom of a water tank from the unit cages placed in the middle. The speed of wakes behind inside the row in the middle was slower than that outside the row. Water velocity inside and outside a real abalone cage at Nowha Island adjacent to Wan Island was measured to verify results from the tank test. The speed of current in front of the cage by 2 m was 0.11 m/sec while it was only 0.0009 m/sec inside the cage. It had similar findings with those of a tank test.
High-damping rubber bearings (HDRB) are commonly used as seismic isolation devices to protect civil engineering structures from earthquakes. However, the nonlinear hysteresis characteristics of the HDRB, such as their dependence on material properties and hardening phenomena, make predicting their behavior during earthquakes difficult. This study proposes a hysteretic model that can accurately predicts the behavior of shear deformation considering the nonlinearity when designing the seismic isolation structures using HDR bearings. To model the hysteretic characteristics of the HDR, dynamic loading tests were performed by applying sinusoidal and random waves on scaled-down specimens. The test results show that the nonlinear characteristics of the HDR strongly correlate with the shear strain experienced in the past. Furthermore, when shear deformation occurred above a certain level, the hardening phenomenon, wherein the stiffness increased rapidly, was confirmed. Based on the experimental results, the dynamic characteristics of the HDR, equivalent stiffness, equivalent damping ratio, and strain energy were quantitatively evaluated and analyzed. In this study, an improved bilinear HDR model that can reproduce the dependence on shear deformation and hardening phenomena was developed. Additionally, by proposing an objective parameter-setting procedure based on the experimental results, the model was devised such that similar parameters could be set by anyone. Further, an actual dynamic analysis could be performed by modeling with minimal parameters. The proposed model corresponded with the experimental results and successfully reproduced the mechanical characteristics evaluated from experimental results within an error margin of 10%.
A scaled version of a roller rig is developed to demonstrate the dynamic characteristics of a railway vehicle for academic purposes. This rig is designed based on Jaschinski's similarity law. It is scaled to 1/10 of actual size and allows 9-DOF motion to examine the up and down vibration of a train set. The test rig consists of three sub-hardware components: (i) a driving roller mechanism with a three-phase AC motor and an inverter, (ii) a bogie structure with first and second suspensions, and (iii) the vehicle body. The motor of the rig is capable of 3,600rpm, allowing the test to simulate a vehicle up to a maximum speed of 400Km/hr. Because bearings and joints are properly connected to the sub-structures, various motion analyses, such as a lateral, pitching, and yawing motion, are allowed. The slip motion between the rail and the wheel set is also monitored by several sensors mounted in the rig. After the construction of the hardware, an experiment is conducted to obtain the natural frequencies of the dynamic behavior of the specimen. First, the test rig is run and data are collected from six sets of accelerometers. Then, a numerical analysis of the model based on the ADAMS program is derived. Finally, the measurement data of the first three fundamental frequencies are compared to the analytical result and the validation of the test rig is conducted. The results show that the developed roller rig provides good accuracy in simulating the dynamic behavior of the vehicle motion. Although the roller rig designed in this paper is intended for academia, it can easily be implemented as part of a dynamic experiment of a bogie and a vehicle body for a high-speed train as part of the research efforts in this area.
The method in a bid to make better use of limited urban space amidst increasingly expanding urban area have been attempted in various ways. Efficient using underground space is one of the examples. The pipe roof and excavation for underground crossing implemented in this study was the part of evaluation of such attempt. However, the pipe roof method for underground crossing may cause the ground surface to be uplifted or settled down, having effect on structure above the ground. Thus in this study, a laboratory model test designed to evaluate the effect on surface during implementing pipe roof and excavation was carried out. The ground displacement during pipe roof advancing and excavation is usually occurred in a radial shape but as the study focused on trackbed, the evaluation included ground settlement only. Thus, appropriately-scaled model was selected considering domestic geological characteristics and operation characteristics of traditional and high-speed rail trains and the qualitative evaluation of displacement was carried out with a certain ground loss depending on excavation after categorizing trackbed settlement pattern depending on depth of top soil.
We developed a preliminary CFD analysis methodology to predict a pressure build up due to hydrogen flame acceleration in the APR1400 IRWST on the basis of CFD analysis results for test data of hydrogen flame acceleration in a scaled-down test facility performed by Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute. We found out that ANSYS CFX-13 with a combustion model of the so-called turbulent flame closure and a model constant of A = 5.0, a grid model with a hexahedral cell length of 5.0 mm, and a time step size of $1.0{\times}10^{-5}$ s can be a useful tool to predict the pressure build up due to the hydrogen flame acceleration in the test results. Through the comparison of the simulated results with the test results, we found out that the proposed CFD analysis methodology enables us to predict the peak pressure within an error range of about ${\pm}29%$ for the hydrogen concentration of 19.5%. However, the error ranges of the peak pressure for the hydrogen concentration of 15.4% and 18.6% were about 66% and 51%, respectively. To reduce the error ranges in case of the hydrogen concentration of 15.4% and 18.6%, some uncertainties of the test conditions should be clarified. In addition, an investigation for a possibility of flame extinction in the test results should be performed.
The experiments for aerodynamic characteristics on railway acoustic screen are performed using 1/61 scale-down mock-up facility. The train model for the experiment is high speed train (KTX) and the tested speed is about 300km/h. The tested train length is about 61cm which is corresponding to two units of train. The strength of pressure wave is measured using piezo typed pressure sensor. The measured pressure is compared with field test data and UIC 779-1 values.
This paper shows the series power device in the massive roof-top PVs and domestic loads. D-UPFC as the series power device controls the distribution voltage during voltage rise (or fall) condition. D-UPFC consists of the bi-directional ac-ac converter and the transformer. In order to verify the D-UPFC voltage control, the distribution model is used in the case study. D-UPFC enables the voltage control in the distribution voltage range. Dynamic voltage control from voltage rise and voltage fall conditions is performed. Scaled-down experimental test of the D-UPFC is verified the voltage control and it is well performed without high voltage spikes in the inductive load.
