To increase the utilization of soil survey results, classification of morphological types of paddy soils which was consisted of land-form, texture, and drainage classes etc. was attempted as an interpretive classification system. The paddy soils could be classified into 37 types. Among the types, the "Lfi(Fine loamy textured semi-wet paddy on local valley and fans)" acreage of about 224 thousand ha, "Lfd(Fine loamy textured dry paddy on local valley and fans)" 160 thousand ha. "Lmi(Coarse loamy textured semi-wet paddy on local valley and fans)" 112 thousand ha, and "Lkd(Loamy skeletal dry paddy on local valley and fans)" 93 thousand ha, respectively were the dominant types. The possibility of double cropping, plastic film house, green manure cropping etc., and that for soil managements such as application of raw straw or compost, deep plowing or adding fine earth materials, mole drainage, susceptibility to erosion or reduction injury etc. for each types were recommended.

This experiment was conducted to investigate the selection of regional double cropping system for production of organic forage in middle part of Korea and investigated their productivity, feed values and stock carrying capacity. The test results proved the Sorghum${\times}$Sudangrass hybrid was 10.9 $ton{\cdot}ha^{-1}$, the one of Rye + Red clover and Rye + Hairy vetch were the highest one as 3.3 $ton{\cdot}ha^{-1}$ and the relative yield about a Rye is higher in the dry matter yield in the field soil. And as for the relative forage values (RFV), Corn is the most excellent ones as 96.6 but there were no the significant difference between the Sorghum${\times}$Sudangrass hybrid of 84.4 and it. The total digestible nutrient (TDN) content in Rye + Hairy vetch is higher than others as 59.7%. As for the relative feed value, Rye + Red clover is the highest one as 83.8 but there was no significant differences between them. As for the ability to raise livestock in the field soil, the average values of $K_{CP}$ and $K_{TDN}$ are shown as 4.27 head/ha/yr in Sorghum${\times}$Sudangrass hybrid. As for the same crops, the average values of $K_{CP}$ and $K_{TDN}$ showed the highest ones as 1.74 head/ha/yr, in Rye + Red clover but there were no the significant differences. As for the dry matter yield of the rice field soil, organic rice straw was 3.3 $ton{\cdot}ha^{-1}$ and Rye + Red clover significantly showed the highest values as 4.1 $ton{\cdot}ha^{-1}$. In the rice filed soil, the crude protein content of organic rice straw was 3.1% and the TDN content of organic rice straw was 55%. The TDN content in Rye + Red clover was higher than others as 59.7%. As for the relative forage values, Rye + Red clover showed the highest one as 83.8 but there were no significant differences between them. As for the ability to raise livestock in the rice field, the average values of $K_{CP}$ and $K_{TDN}$ in the organic rice straw was 1.04 head/ha/yr and the average values of $K_{CP}$ and $K_{TDN}$ in Rye + Red clover is the highest one as 1.84 head/ha/yr, but there were no significant differences in all of them.
It is important to determine the optimum harvesting time that impact decisively on the quality of vegetable waxy corns. In general, it takes 20~25 days from silking to harvest according to ecotype when waxy corn hybrids were sown in April. We identified the optimum harvesting time by the ecotypes and seeding dates for the establishment of corn double cropping system of waxy corn. It takes 23~25 days from silking to harvest regardless of ecotype, when waxy corns were sown at early in April or late in June. It takes 28~31 days when Chalok1, early maturing type, was sown between in July 10, and in July 30. It takes 29~31 days when Ilmichal, medium late maturing type, was sown between in July 10 and in July 20, but 39 days were required when sown at in July 30. The cumulative temperature for harvesting was about $1700^{\circ}C{\sim}2100^{\circ}C$. The minimum cumulative temperature from seeding to harvest was approximately $600^{\circ}C$. These results will be helpful to the farmers for determining the optimum harvest time of vegetable waxy corns.
To maintain the self-sufficiency of food production , it is required to improved the productivity and increase the effective utilization of land in the double cropping areas using improved cultivation technology. The following reasons encourage this cours of action because the overlapping rice harvest and barely seeding seasons complete for labour, the lower price of barley makes it financially less attractive to grow and these two facts together are responsible for a decrease in barley being planted in certain more seasonably marginal double cropping areas. Fro these reasons, it is desirable to carry out tests to improve the current cultivation techniques . In this interest , the following studies were carried out in the experimental field located at Banweol-myeon, Whasung-jkun, Gyeonggi-do from October 1977 to July 1978 in order to establish the mechanical method of barley cultivation using the power tiller. The summarized results are as follows. 1. The work performance in the seeding operation using the rotary barley seeder was 68 minutes per 10 ares which compares favourably with 408 min/10a using the conventional method. This is only one sixth of the time required by th conventional method. The operating costs using the rotary barley seeder was 1, 463 won per 10 areas as against 3, 486 Won per 10 ares for the conventional method, showing a saving of about 50% in comparison with the conventional method. 2. In the manure spreading operation, the work performance was 25 min/10a for the manure spreading machine , compared to 1089 min/10a for the manual operations. This is about one fourth of the time required by the conventional method, The operating costs were 810 Won/10a for the machine and 857 Won/10a for the manual labour. This cost shows little advantage by the machine over the manual labor costs. The conventional method of manure spreading will continue pending decision which will develope and improve the machine.3. Work performance in the rolling operation using the barley rolIer was 30 min/lOa which compares favourably with 135 min/10a using conventional method. This was one fourth of the time required by the conventional method. The operating costs were 514 Won/103. for the machine and 1, 003 Won/lOa for manual labour. In the weed control operation, the work performance and operating costs were 45min/lOa, 1, 399won/10a for the herbcide application using the power sprayer, 1, 149min/10a 8, 541won/lOa for the conventional method respectively. This is 26 times higher efficiency in comparison to the conventional method. 4. In the harvesting operation using the reaper binder and tiller attachment, the work performance was 60min/lOa and represents a cost of 2, 039won/10a. The con\ulcornerventional method took 640min/10a at a cost of 4, 757won/lOa. The reaper binder showns a saving of one tenth over the conventional method. The automatic thresher is already recommended for the current situations, and is now being used. 5. From a comparison of the results of the above trials, the serial cultivation system using the attachment for the power tiller such as the rotary barley seeder is now to be recommended for the current barley cultivation system. It is also recommend from these results that the mechanized technology now available must be used to improve and maintain the increase in barley production. It is seen th1t this is the only course now avaihble to solve the peak seasonal requirements of labour needed for l11rvesting and seeding between rice and barley cultivation.
For the labor-saving cultivation of barley in rice-barley double cropping system in paddy field, a series of expriments on the effect of rice straw application were carried out at the National Yeongnam Agricultural Experiment Station from 1992 to 1993. The affection of phenol compounds released from fresh rice straw could be lessened when seeded under rice straw in the soil and that made emergence rate increase by 11%, compared with that on application on the rice straw. Although utilization of rice straw as an organic material caused the poor growth of barley in early stage, it could be enhanced the culm breaking strength. On this reason, affected by rice straw, grain yield was increased from 8% in common barley and up to 20% in malting barley. The more nitrogen, CaO$_2$2 and SiO$_2$ applied, the more decomposition of rice straw accelerated from 2% to 6.9%. On the application of rice straw as an organic material in malting barely cultivation, the content of crude protein was decreased while 1,000-grain-weight and grain assortment was increased.

Based on in-situ monitoring data produced by National Institute of Meteorological Sciences, we evaluated the performance of Joint UK Land Environment Simulator (JULES) on the surface energy balance for rice-paddy and cropland in Korea with the operational ancillary data used for Unified Model (UM) Local Data Assimilation and Prediction System (LDAPS) (CTL) and the high-resolution ancillary data from external sources (EXP). For these experiments, we employed the one-year (March 2015~February 2016) observations of eddy-covariance fluxes and soil moisture contents from a double-cropping rice-paddy in BoSeong and a cropland in AnDong. On the rice-paddy site the model performed better in the CTL experiment except for the sensible heat flux, and the latent heat flux was underestimated in both of experiments which can be inferred that the model represents flood-irrigated surface poorly. On the cropland site the model performance of the EXP experiment was worse than that of CTL experiment related to unrealistic surface type fractions. The pattern of the modeled soil moisture was similar to the observation but more variable in time. Our results shed a light on that 1) the improvement of land scheme for the flood-irrigated rice-paddy and 2) the construction of appropriate high-resolution ancillary data should be considered in the future research.
An investigation was carried out to find out the effects of long-term application (14 and 28 years) of rice straw, compost and wheat straw on changes in soil chemical and physical properities, aspests of releasing potential nitrogen and nitrogen uptake by rice and maize from fine textured paddy soils with double cropping system in warm temperate area. The result obtained were summarized as follows : 1. The long-term application of organic matters improved plow layer and soil physical properties : bulk density and solid phase were decreased, while porosity and gaseous phase were decreased. 2. Average increment of total carbon per year was 0.0371% and 0.0407% for rice straw and compost, respectively, from 1 through 14 years ; it was 0.0007% and 0.0014% for the rice straw and compost, respectively, from 15 years through 28 years. The average increment of total notrogen per year was 0.0025% and 0.038% for the rice straw and compost, respectively, from 1 through 14 years ; 0.0014% and 0.0024% for the same treatments from 15 through 28 years. 3. $NH_4-N$ and amide-N were high in the soils with wheat straw application for 28 years ; the amino sugar-N in the soils with compost application for 28 years ; amino acid -N in the soils with rice straw application for 14 and 28 years ; and unidentified-N, in the control. 4. The released amount of available nitrogen with the submerged condition was higher at $30^{\circ}C$ than at $25^{\circ}C$ during the incubation. The amount of released available nitrogen at the field was aproximately same as that of $25^{\circ}C$ incubation. However, the released amounts from the incubation and the field were always lower than those extracted with reagents. 5. The amount of nitrogen uptake by rice and maize was highly correlated with available nitrogen extracted with phosphate buffer(pH 7.0). 6. The ratio of yield increase(milled rice) was 17, 12 and 7%, respectively, by application of rice straw, compost and wheat straw for 28 years, and 11% by application of rice straw for 14 years.
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of application of composted cattle manure (CCM) on the productivity of the whole crop rice (WCR) and Italian ryegrass (IRG) on both Sancheong and Asan area from 2005 to 2008. Application levels of CCM such as chemical fertilizer (CF), CCM 150% and CCM 200% were tested in paddy field. Amount of CCM was adjusted equal to total nitrogen value relative to its value of CF. Mean dry matter yield (DMY) of WCR and IRG increased in order; CCM 200% > CF > CCM 150% in Asan and there was no significant difference between CCM 200% and CF. In Sancheong, DMYs of WCR and IRG significantly decreased (p<0.05) in order CF > CCM 200% > CCM 150%. The plant length and number of tiller of WCR were not different among treatments, however the percentage of ripeness of WCR was higher (p<0.05) in CF compared to CCM 150% and CCM 200%. Also, there were no differences in NDF and ADF contents, however CP content was higher (p<0.05) in CF treatment compared to CCM 150% and CCM 200%. Based on the results of this experiment, IRG-WCR double cropping system with application of CCM may be effective in producing the forage resources of 18~20 tons every year with eco-friendly way.
'Manjong' is a new japonica rice cultivar developed in 2009 derived from a cross between 'Yeongdeog34' and 'Nampyeongbyeo' at the Department of Functional Crop, NICS, RDA. This cultivar is suitable for the double cropping system after the cash crop cultivation. Heading date of 'Manjong' is later than 'Keumobyeo' under the late transplanting cultivation on July 10. It has high grain fertility under cold conditions and low premature heading. One of the distinguishing characteristics of this variety is its resistance to major diseases like leaf blast and rice stripe virus disease. However, it shows susceptibility to major insect pests and bacterial blight disease. Milled rice kernels are translucent with non-glutinous endosperm and have 7.2% protein and 18.7% amylose contents. Ripening ratio and head rice ratio is very higher than those of 'Keumobyeo'. The palatability of cooked rice is also better than 'Keumobyeo'. The milled rice yield of 'Manjong' in local adaptability tests after harvest of the cash crop is $4.81MT\;ha^{-1}$. This cultivar is suitable for planting in the plain paddy fields of Honam and Yeonnam regions in Korea.

Soybean is one of the important food crop around the world. Especially in East Asia, it is the main ingredient for traditional food like soy sauce and soy paste. The double cropping system including soybean following onion, Chinese cabbage, and potato is widely adopted in Southern region of Korea. In this system, sowing date of second crop (soybean) can be delayed depending on first crops' growth period and weather condition. When planting date is delayed it is known that soybean yield is declined because of shorter vegetative growth period and earlier flowering induced by warm temperature and changes in photoperiod. The objective of this study was to determine soybean growth and yield responses as plant populations at late planting date. Field experiment was conducted at Department of Functional Crop, National Institute of Crop Science, RDA located in Miryang, Gyeongsangnam-Do for two years ('13-'14) in upland field with mid-late maturity cultivar Daewon. A split-plot block design was used with three replications. Main plots were three sowing dates from June 20 to July 20 with 15 days intervals, and subplots were 4 levels of planting densities. Data of maturity (R8) was recorded, yield components and yield were examined after harvesting. Experimental data were analyzed by using PROC GLM, and DMRT were used for mean comparison. Optimum planting population for maximizing soybean yield in late planting which compared with standard population. In mid-June planting, higher planting density causes increased plant height and decreased diameter which lead to higher risk of lodging, however, reduced growth period due to late planting alleviated this problem. Therefore higher seeding rates can provide protection against low seedling emergence caused by late planting in this region.
