Sensing Characteristics of Uncoated Double Cladding Long-period Fiber Grating Based on Mode Transition and Dual-peak Resonance

  • In this paper, the sensing characteristics of a double cladding fiber (DCF) long-period fiber grating (LPFG) to the surrounding refractive index (SRI) are studied. The outer cladding of the DCF plays the role of the overlay, thus, the mode transition (MT) phenomenon of DCF can be induced by etching the outer cladding radius instead of coating overlays. The response characteristics of the effective refractive index (ERI) of the cladding mode to the outer cladding radius are analyzed. It is found that in the MT range, the change rate of ERIs of cladding modes is relatively larger than that for other ranges. Further, based on the features of the mode transition region (MTR), the phase-matching curve of the 11th cladding mode is investigated, and the response of the DCF-LPFG to the SRI is characterized by the change of wavelength intervals between the dual peaks under different outer cladding radii. The numerical simulation results show that the SRI sensitivity is greatly improved, which is available to 3484.0 nm/RIU with the fitting degree 0.998 in the SRI range of 1.33-1.37. The proposed DCF-LPFG can provide new theoretical support for designing the DCF-LPFG refractive index sensor with excellent performances of sensitivity, linearity and structure.

  • We report the fabrication of double clad fiber (DCF) and DCF coupler, suitable for fiber based imaging systems requiring the dual-channel transmission. Unlike the conventional DCF which uses silica for both cladding layers, the proposed DCF uses a low-index polymer for its outer-cladding layer coated over the conventional silica inner-cladding layer. The DCF is drawn with a conventional SMF preform but a low-index polymer coating is used for both jacket and outercladding of the fiber. To achieve the cladding mode coupling, a DCF coupler is fabricated by simply twisting two pieces of the proposed DCF after removing the polymer-coating at contacting regions. A cladding mode coupling ratio of 30% was achieved with a contact length of 16 cm. The proposed DCF and DCF coupler were employed in a composite optical coherence tomography (OCT) and fluorescence spectroscopy (FS) system, and both OCT images and FS signal from a plant tissue are measured simultaneously.

  • We report a probe using a single double clad fiber (DCF) for fluorescence spectroscopy. Bidirectional separate transmission for excitation and fluorescence light in a single fiber was implemented. A DCF coupler made by side-polished method could extract none but the collected fluorescence signals propagating in inner cladding mode, thereby diminishing the interference of silica background generated by the excitation in core mode. The experimental results show that the fluorescence spectra of biological tissues obtained using the DCF probes have much less silica background than using a standard multiple-mode fiber.

Highly Birefringent and Dispersion Compensating Photonic Crystal Fiber Based on Double Line Defect Core

  • We propose a highly birefringent and dispersion compensating photonic crystal fiber based on a double line defect core. Using a finite element method (FEM) with a perfectly matched layer (PML), it is demonstrated that it is possible to obtain broadband large negative dispersion of about -400 to -427 ps/(nm.km) covering all optical communication bands (from O to U band) and to achieve the dispersion coefficient of -425 ps/(nm.km) at 1.55μm. In addition, the highest birefringence of the proposed PCF at 1.55 μm is 1.92 × 10-2 and the value of birefringence from the wavelength of 1.26 to 1.8 μm (covering O to U bands) is about 1.8 × 10-2 to 1.92 × 10-2. It is confirmed that from the simulation results, the confinement loss of the proposed PCF is always less than 10-3 dB/km at 1.55 μm with seven fiber rings of air holes in the cladding.

  • 광통신 시스템에 필요한 여러 가지 광소자들과 광섬유간의 결합손실을 줄이고 결합거리를 향상시키기 위한 연구가 많이 이루어져 왔다. 광섬유의 클래딩 모드를 이용하여 정렬오차를 줄인 광커넥터에 대한 결과가 보고된 바 있다. 그러나, 장주기 광섬유격자를 통하여 여기된 광섬유의 클래딩 모드는 외부환경에 매우 민감하여 외부 접촉에 의한 손실과 공진 파장의 변화 등이 문제로 제시되었다. 본 연구에서는 코어와 통상의 클래딩 사이에 또 하나의 클래딩 층을 갖는 이중 클래딩 구조의 광섬유에 장주기 격자를 만들고, 장주기 격자에 의하여 여기된 여러 클래딩 모드 가운데 광섬유의 코어와 내부 클래딩 층으로만 주로 진행하는 첫 번째 클래딩 모드를 사용하는 광커넥터를 제안한다.   • In this paper, the double-refractive index profile, which is generalized a trapezoidal index profile, is proposed to study the characteristics of a optical fiber in the wave length 1.55um. Being compared with a triangle profile, it has many advantages over an optimum core radius, the minimum refractive index difference and the change of chromati dispersion characteristics with wavelength. Though the value of a varies from 2 to infinite, the same results are approximately obtained. Therefore, in fabrication of a fiber, the step part of trapezoidal index profile can replace the profile of a-power refractive index. Because the refractive index presented in this paper varies with a, it can be applied to multiple cladding fiber or segmented core fiber. And it is expected that the characteristics of the fiber are obtained.

  • Design and fabrication of a TCRR (Triple-coupler Ring Resonator) filter which can provide a doubled FSR (Free Spectral Range) compared with a conventional DCRR (Double-coupler Ring Resonator) filter, are discussed. Through the use of a polymer material with a good thermo-optic property and with high contrast between core and cladding polymer, a compact TCRR filter composed of straight and curved buried waveguides of small radius is designed and fabricated. The transmission characteristics from the through and drop ports are measured using a tunable laser and a fiber array block, and the FSR is observed to be 4.4 nm, about twice that of DCRR filter, and almost the same as that obtained from the analysis using a transfer matrix method.
