  • Intraosseous phlebography was performed to determine the healing effect of the dosing treated with vitamin-D$_3$ and/or calcium phosphate on the fractured bone in male rabbits. Femoral shafts of 16 adult male rabbits were fractured and these animals were divided into 3 treated groups and 1 control group l. The 1st treated group of rabbits was dosed with vitamin-D$_3$(VD), the 2nd treated group of rabbits was given calcium phosphate(CP), and the 3.d treated group of rabbits received vitamin-D$_3$ and calcium phosphate. The control group of rabbits was dosed with saline alone. Radiographs were taken weekly in each rabbit over 6 weeks period and the results obtained were as follows. 1. Sinusoidal vein was visualized at 3rd week in eve animal received CP and VC, at 5 week in animals received VD and in control animals. 2. Main nutrient vein was observed more clearly in treated groups than in control group of animals. 3. These results indicate that venous reconstruction of the fractured bone in groups of rabbits received CP and VC was earlier and more complete than those of other groups of rabbits. 4. Therefore, intraosseous phlebography is suitable for determination of the bone healing effect of vitamin-D$_3$ and/or calcium phosphate in femoral fractured rabbits.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare with the Persian texile design having an out-standing skill in fertile designs with the Byzantine textile dosing being influenced a lot by Christinity and many Oriental factors including Hellenism. These two textile design have some similarities and differences in their patterns. The results of the study were as follows: Similarities ; 1. The Persian traditional animals, hunting scenes and cavaliers are used as the major subject in both patterns. 2. Decorative designs enclosed circular are used in both patterns. Differences ; 1. The Persian textile designs are based on Zoroasterianism, and their animal designs have the Zoroasterian religious meanings. While the Byzantine designs are affected by the Christianity. In the Byantine textile designs, the mythical subjects from ancient Rome and Greece, and the circus scenes are dominent. 3. The Persian textile designs are combative, momentary, dignifed, and realistic pattern, while the Byzantin textile designs are playful, sketchy, humouristic, and evasive pattern. 4. Vivid color effect was found in the Persian textile patterns: however, more refined and gorgeous color was used by the Byzantine textile patterns. Thus, the Persian and the Byzantine textile patterns have interrelations with each other. In general, the Persian textile patterns have affected a great deal on the Byzantine textine textile patterns. They are essentially corelated with each other, but each of them has its own characteristics.

  • In this research the genotoxic effect of $Polycan^{TM}$ ${\beta}$-glucans originated from Aureobasidium pullulans SM-2001, was evaluated using the mouse micronucleus test. $Polycan^{TM}$ was administered once a day for 2 days by oral gavage to male ICR mice at doses of 1000, 500 and 250 mg/kg. Cyclophosphamide was used as a known genotoxic agent in a positive control group. The appearance of a micronucleus is used as an index for genotoxic potential. The results obtained indicated that $Polycan^{TM}$ shows no genotoxicity effect up to 1000 mg/kg dosing levels. In addition, it is also considered that there were no problems from cytotoxicity of $Polycan^{TM}$ tested in this study because the polychromatic erythrocyte ratio was detected as > 0.47 in all tested groups.

  • This study was to evaluate the single dose toxicity of Arecae Semen (AS) in male and female ICR mice. Aqueous extracts of AS (Yield = 13.15%) were administered as an oral dose of 2,000, 1,000 and 500 mg/kg (body weight) according to the recommendation of Korea Food and Drug Administration (KFDA) guidelines. Animals were monitored for the mortality and changes in body weight, clinical signs and gross observation during 14 days after dosing, upon necropsy; organ weight and histopathology of 12 principle organs were examined. We could not find any mortality, clinical signs, and changes in the body and organ weight except for diarrhea. Diarrhea were observed in all three different dosage groups of male mice, and in 2000 mg/kg groups of female mice within 48hrs after administration. In addition, no AS extract related abnormal gross findings and changes in histopathology of principle organs were detected except for some sporadic accidental findings. Although the 50% lethal dose and approximate lethal dose of AS aqueous extracts in female and male mice were detected as over 2,000 mg/kg - the limited highest dosage recommended by KFDA guidelines. It should be carefully used in clinics because AS may be induced severe digestive tract disorders.

  • Flocculation and flotation are used as pretreatment steps prior to the reverse osmosis (RO) process. During seawater treatment, high temperature can change the water chemistry of seawater during the process of coagulation. It also affects bubble volume concentration (BVC) and bubble characteristics. Coagulants such as alum and ferric salts at $40^{\circ}C$ can also change flux rates in the seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) process. In this study, the bubble characteristics in dissolved air flotation (DAF), used as a SWRO pretreatment process, were studied in synthetic seawater at $20^{\circ}C$ and $40^{\circ}C$. The flux of an RO membrane was monitored after dosing the synthetic seawater with coagulants at different temperatures. Results showed that BVC increases as the operating pressure increases and as the salt concentration decreases. The bubble size released at $40^{\circ}C$ is far smaller than that at $20^{\circ}C$The addition of a ferric salt is effective for turbidity removal in synthetic seawater at $20^{\circ}C$; it is more effective than alum. When synthetic seawater was dosed with a ferric salt, the RO membrane flux increased by 27 % at $40^{\circ}C$.

  • Macrolide antimicrobial agents including erythromycin, roxithromycin, clarithromycin, and azithromycin are commonly used in the treatment of respiratory tract infections in children. Newer macrolides that have structural modifications of older drug erythromycin show improved change in the spectrum of activity, dosing, and administration. However, recent studies reported that increasing use of macrolide antibiotics is the main force driving the development of macrolide resistance in streptococci. In particular, azithromycin use is more likely to select for macrolide resistance with Streptococcus pneumoniae than is clarithromycin use, a possible reflection of its much longer half life. Recently, erythromycin resistance rates of S. pneumoniae and Streptococcus pyogenes are rapidly increasing in Korea. Two main mechanisms of acquired macrolide resistance have been described, altered binding site on the bacterial ribosome encoded by the ermB gene and active macrolide efflux pump encoded by the mef gene. Relationship between the susceptibility of S. pneumoniae and the response to macrolides has been shown in studies of acute otitis media, but less clear in cases of pneumonia. This article reviews the spectrum of activity, pharmacokinetic properties, mechanisms of action and resistance, and clinical implication of resistance on the treatment of respiratory tract infections in children.

  • Sandimmune Neoral$\^$(R)/ and Neoplanta$\^$(R)/ capsules were administered to twenty four healthy Korean male subjects at a cyclosporin A (CsA) dose of 175 mg in a 2 ${\times}$ 2 crossover investigation with a two-week wash-out phase. Concentrations of CsA in blood were measured by RIA method for over a period of 48 h. Result : The two formulations were found bioequivalent, but analysis of variance (ANOVA) indicated that there is a significant (p<0.01) period effect in AUC$\_$0-LAST/ (area under the blood concentration above assay limit of quantification-time curve) and C$\_$MAX/ (maximum blood concentration) between the administrations. Paired t-test revealed 6 and 9% decreases in AUC$\_$0-LAST/ and C$\_$MAX/, respectively at the second administration. This period effect on the pharmacokinetics of CsA may be relevant for the patients who need consecutive administration of the drug. A number of mechanisms, such as induction of the enzymes responsible for metabolism of the drug in the gut wall and/or liver and modulation of P-glycoprotein upon the consecutive dosing, appear consistent with the change, and needs experimental proof.

  • The genotoxic effects of DHU001, a polyherbal formula were evaluated using the mouse micronucleus test. DHU001 was administered once a day for 2 continuous days by oral gavage to male ICR mice at doses of 2000, 1000 and 500 mg/kg. Cyclophosphamide was used as a known genotoxic agent in a positive control. The appearance of a micronucleus is used as an index for genotoxic potential. In addition, the changes on the total white blood cells and differential counts on the lymphocytes, neutrophils, eosinophils, basophils and monocytes in the prepared blood smears were also conducted to observe the possible immunosuppression. The results indicats that DHU001 showed no genotoxicity effects up to 2000 mg/kg dosing levels and did not influenced on the total white blood cells and differential counts. In addition, it is also considered that there were no problems from cytotoxicity of DHU001 tested in this study because the polychromatic erythrocyte ratio was detected as > 0.41 in all tested groups.
