Implementation and field test for autonomous navigation of manta UUV (만타형 무인 잠수정의 개발과 실해역 성능시험)

  • This paper describes the development and field experiments of Manta-type Unmanned Underwater Vehicle (UUV). Various simulations for Manta UUV are performed by using the nonlinear 6-DOF motion of equations. Through this simulation we verified the motion performances of Manta UUV. To acquire the blueprint of Manta UUV, it was designed with the simulation results. The Manta UUV uses a Doppler Velocity Log (DVL), gyrocompass, GPS, pressure sensor and other minor sensors, applied to measure the motion, position and path of Manta UUV. For its propulsion and changing a direction in the underwater, one vertical fin and four horizontal fins are installed at the hull of UUV. The Manta UUV system was verified with motion and autonomous navigation test at field.

  • To obtain the system requirement specification in the beginning of the precision guidance system development, the effectiveness and reliability analysis for the system are necessary. The main purpose of this research is to obtain the system requirement specification for the high speed unmanned underwater vehicles by carrying out the effectiveness analysis using the modeling and simulation scheme. The effectiveness is position error for target position. Reaching accuracy is expected to be affected by the navigation sensor parameter. Assume that the navigation sensors that is consist of inertial navigation system(INS) and doppler velocity log(DVL) is the parameter. To analyze the effectiveness of each parameter, Monte-Carlo numerical simulation is performed in this research. The effectiveness analysis is carried out using circular error probability(CEP) and variance analyze scheme. Considering the cost function, the specification of the navigation sensor is provided. The cost function is consist of the INS and DVL specification and the price of those sensors.

  • This paper presents a rotating ann test for assessment of an underwater hybrid navigation system for a semi-autonomous underwater vehicle. The navigation system consists of an inertial measurement unit (IMU), an ultra-short baseline (USBL) acoustic navigation sensor and a doppler velocity log (DVL) accompanying a magnetic compass. The errors of inertial measurement units increase with time due to the bias errors of gyros and accelerometers. A navigational system model is derived to include the error model of the USBL acoustic navigation sensor and the scale effect and bias errors of the DVL, of which the state equation composed of the navigation states and sensor parameters is 25 in the order. The conventional extended Kalman filter was used to propagate the error covariance, update the measurement errors and correct the state equation when the measurements are available. The rotating ann tests are conducted in the Ocean Engineering Basin of KRISO, KORDI to generate circular motion in laboratory, where the USBL system was absent in the basin. The hybrid underwater navigation system shows good tracking performance against the circular planar motion. Additionally this paper checked the effects of the sampling ratio of the navigation system and the possibility of the dead reckoning with the DVL and the magnetic compass to estimate the position of the vehicle.

  • This paper presents an integrated navigation system that combines ultra-short baseline (USBL), Doppler velocity log (DVL), and heading measurements for a deep-sea remotely operated vehicle, Hemire. A navigation model is introduced based on the kinematic relation of the position and velocity. The system states are predicted using the navigation model and corrected with the USBL, DVL, and heading measurements using the Kalman filter. The performance of the navigation system was confirmed through re-navigation simulations with the measured data at the Southern Mariana Arc submarine volcanoes. Based on the characteristics of the measurements, the design process for the parameters of the system modeling error covariance, measurement error covariance, and initial error covariance are presented. This paper reviews the influence of the outliers and blackout of the USBL and DVL measurements, and proposes an outlier rejection algorithm that is robust to USBL blackout. The effectiveness of the method is demonstrated with re-navigation for the data that includes USBL blackouts.

M&S model is constructed using 6-DOF dynamic model, environment model, guidanc -navigation & control model. Assume that the navigation sensor is consist of inertial navigation sensor(INS) and doppler velocity log(DVL), and the speed and direction of current is environment parameter. The effectiveness analysis is carried out using circular error probability(CEP) and variance analyze scheme. Also, the effectiveness analysis is utilized for cost-performance analysis considering the cost of commercial INS and DVL sensor. This paper shows the high-level INS and the low-level DVL configure a high price-performance integrated navigation system.

  • This paper proposes a navigation system with a robust localization method for an underwater unmanned vehicle. For robust localization with IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit), a DVL (Doppler Velocity Log), and depth sensors, the EKF (Extended Kalman Filter) has been utilized to fuse multiple nonlinear data. Note that the GPS (Global Positioning System), which can obtain the absolute coordinates of the vehicle, cannot be used in the water. Additionally, the DVL has been used for measuring the relative velocity of the underwater vehicle. The DVL sensor measures the velocity of an object by using Doppler effects, which cause sound frequency changes from the relative velocity between a sound source and an observer. When the vehicle is moving, the motion trajectory to a target position can be recorded by the sensors attached to the vehicle. The performance of the proposed navigation system has been verified through real experiments in which an underwater unmanned vehicle reached a target position by using an IMU as a primary sensor and a DVL as the secondary sensor.

  • The Kinematic GPS is well known to provide a quite good accuracy of positioning within an level. Although kinematic GPS assures high precision measurement on the basis of an appreciable distance between a reference station and an observational point, it has measurable distance restriction within 20 km from a reference station on land. Therefore, it is necessary to make out a simple and low-cost method to obtain accurate positioning information without distance restriction In this paper, the velocity integration method to get the precise velocity information of a ship is explained. The experimental results of Zig-zag maneuver and Williamson turn as the ship's maneuvering test, and other experimental results of ship's movement during leaving and entering the port with low speed were shown. From the experimental results, ship's course, speed and position are compared with those obtained by kinematic-GPS, velocity integration method and dead reckoning position using Gyro-compass and Doppler-log.

  • Kinematic GPS provides quite good accuracy of position in cm level. Though K-GPS assures high precision measurement in cm level on the basis of an appreciable distance between a station and an observational point, but it has measurable distance restriction within 20 km from a reference station on land. So it is necessary to make out a simple and low-cost method to obtain accurate positioning information without distance restriction. In this paper, the velocity integration method to get the precise velocity information of ship is explained.   • This paper presents the results of an integrated navigation performance analysis for selecting the sensor of an unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV) using Monte Carlo numerical simulation. An inertial measurement unit (IMU) and Doppler velocity log (DVL) are considered to build the integrated navigation system. The position error and price of the sensor are selected as performance indices to evaluate the volunteer integrated navigation systems. Monte-Carlo simulation is introduced to analyze the circular error probability (CEP) and its variance. Simulation results provide the proper sensor combination for integrated navigation in relation to the performance and price.

  • This paper compares methods for attitude estimation of a UUV(Unmanned Underwater Vehicle). Attitude estimation plays a key role in underwater navigation using DVL(Doppler Velocity Log). The paper proposes attitude estimation methods using EKF(Extended Kalman Filter), UKF(Unscented Kalman Filter), and CF(Complementary Filter). It derives methods using the measurements from MEMS-AHRS(Microelectromechanical Systems-Attitude Heading Reference System) and DVL. The methods are used for navigation in a test pool and their navigation performance is compared. The results suggest that even if there is no measurement relative to some absolute landmarks, DVL-only navigation can be useful for navigation in a limited time and range.
