  • Boron trifluoride lithium methacrylate ($BF_3$LiMA)-based gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs) were synthesized with various $BF_3$LiMA concentration to elucidate the effect on ionic conductivity and electrochemical stability by a AC impedance and linear sweep voltammetry (LSV). As a result, the highest ionic conductivity reached $5.3{\times}10^{-4}Scm^{-1}$ at $25^{\circ}C$ was obtained for 4 wt% of $BF_3$LiMA. Furthermore, high electrochemical stability up to 4.3 V of the $BF_3$LiMA-based GPE was observed in LSV measurement since the counter anion was immobilized in this self-doped system. On the other hand, it was assumed that there was a rapid decomposition of electrolytes on a lithium metal electrode which results in a high solid electrolyte interface (SEI) resistance. However, a high stability toward graphite or lithium cobalt oxide (LCO) electrode thereby a low SEI resistance was observed from the AC impedance measurement as a function of storage time at $25^{\circ}C$. Consequently, the high ionic conductivity, good electrochemical stability and the good interfacial compatibility with graphite and LCO were achieved in $BF_3$LiMA-based GPE.

  • High Ni content layered oxide materials for the positive electrode in lithium-ion batteries have high specific capacity. However, their poor electrochemical and thermal stability at elevated temperature restrict the practical use. A small amount of $Al_2O_3$ was added to the mixture of transition metal hydroxide and lithium hydroxide. The $LiNi_{0.6}Co_{0.2}Mn_{0.2}O_2$ was simultaneously doped and coated with $Al_2O_3$ during heat-treatment. Electrochemical characteristics of modified $LiNi_{0.6}Co_{0.2}Mn_{0.2}O_2$ were evaluated by the galvanostatic cycling and the LSTA(linear sweep thermmametry) at the constant voltage conditions. The nano-sized $Al_2O_3$ added materials show better cycle performance at elevated temperature than that of micro-sized $Al_2O_3$. As the added amount of nano-$Al_2O_3$ increased, the thermal stability of electrode also enhanced, but the use of 2.5 mol% Al showed the best high temperature performance.

  • We developed a high-resolution micro-CT system based on rotational gantry and flat-panel detector for live mouse imaging. This system is composed primarily of an x-ray source with micro-focal spot size, a CMOS (complementary metal oxide semiconductor) flat panel detector coupled with Csl (TI) (thallium-doped cesium iodide) scintillator, a linearly moving couch, a rotational gantry coupled with positioning encoder, and a parallel processing system for image data. This system was designed to be of the gantry-rotation type which has several advantages in obtaining CT images of live mice, namely, the relative ease of minimizing the motion artifact of the mice and the capability of administering respiratory anesthesia during scanning. We evaluated the spatial resolution, image contrast, and uniformity of the CT system using CT phantoms. As the results, the spatial resolution of the system was approximately the 11.3 cycles/mm at 10% of the MTF curve, and the radiation dose to the mice was 81.5 mGy. The minimal resolving contrast was found to be less than 46 CT numbers on low-contrast phantom imaging test. We found that the image non-uniformity was approximately 70 CT numbers at a voxel size of ${\sim}55{\times}55{\times}X100\;{\mu}^3$. We present the image test results of the skull and lung, and body of the live mice.
