  • The investigation of the electrical conductivities donor doped $BaTiO_3$at isothermal temperature 700K and 1200K as a function of the oxygen partial press between I and $10^{-20}$atm yields evidence concerning the kind of defects. The position of the minimum conductivity is moved in some orders of magnitude with increasing of donor contents when comparing that of the pure $BaTiO_3$. The conductivity for all the samples with various concentration of donor blends into a same value and the conduction properties become independent of donor contents at very oxygen pratial pressure. This indicates that the reduction has become the major source of defects.

  • The development potential of bovine somatic cells was evaluated using nuclear transfer. A single donor cell derived from fetus of HanWoo(Korean Native Cattle) was selected and deposited into perivitelline space of each enucleated oocyte before electrical fusion and activation. Nuclei of donor cells starved for 7 days (37%) tended to support the development of reconstitute embryo the blastocyst stage better than those of donor cells starved 3, 14 and 30 days. The cleavage rate was significantly lower(P<0.05) in reconstitute embryos derived from large size donor cells(51.2%), than those from small medium size donor cells(76.6 and 73.5, respectively). The developmental rate to blastocyst of reconstructed embryos from medium size donor cells was higher than those from small and medium size donor cells. This study demonstrates that an appropriate culture period for induction into quiescent stage and the size of donor cells effect on the efficiency of nuclear transfer using cultured bovine cells.

  • Background Seroma formation is the most common donor site complication following autologous breast reconstruction, along with hematoma. Seroma may lead to patient discomfort and may prolong hospital stay or delay adjuvant treatment. The aim of this study was to compare seroma rates between the deep inferior epigastric perforator (DIEP), transverse musculocutaneous gracilis (TMG), and superior gluteal artery perforator (SGAP) donor sites. Methods The authors conducted a retrospective single-center cohort study consisting of chart review of all patients who underwent microsurgical breast reconstruction from April 2018 to June 2020. The primary outcome studied was frequency of seroma formation at the different donor sites. The secondary outcome evaluated potential prognostic properties associated with seroma formation. Third, the number of donor site seroma evacuations was compared between the three donor sites. Results Overall, 242 breast reconstructions were performed in 189 patients. Demographic data were found statistically comparable between the three flap cohorts, except for body mass index (BMI). Frequency of seroma formation was highest at the SGAP donor site (75.0%), followed by the TMG (65.0%), and DIEP (28.6%) donor sites. No association was found between seroma formation and BMI, age at surgery, smoking status, diabetes mellitus, neoadjuvant chemotherapy, or DIEP laterality. The mean number of seroma evacuations was significantly higher in the SGAP and the TMG group compared with the DIEP group. Conclusion This study provides a single center's experience regarding seroma formation at the donor site after microsurgical breast reconstruction. The observed rate of donor site seroma formation was comparably high, especially in the TMG and SGAP group, necessitating an adaption of the surgical protocol.

  • Nitric oxide (NO) donors are a potent inducer of heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1). However, it is unclear whether or not HO-1 expression induced by NO donors is a direct consequence of NO released by NO donors. Here, we investigated the effects of NO donors on the expression of HO-1 in primary rat articular chondrocytes. NO donors (SIN-1, SNAP, and SNP) significantly induced the accumulation of HO-1 protein accompanied by an increase in HO-1 mRNA. NO donor-induced HO-1 expression exerted cytoprotection against NO and/or superoxide-induced cell death. Guanylate cyclase signaling was not associated with Nrf2 and HO-1 expression in NO donor-treated chondrocytes. Interestingly, NO scavenger carboxy-PTIO and SOD mimetic TEMPOL markedly inhibited NO donor-induced HO-1 expression in chondrocytes. In addition, NO donor-induced HO-1 expression was completely abrogated by the peroxynitrite scavenger MnTBAP. Since peroxynitrite can be physiologcally formed in the cell through reaction of NO with superoxide, we analyzed whether or not peroxynitrite could directly induce HO-1 expression in chondrocytes. Peroxynitrite treatment in chondrocytes evoked doseand time-dependent Nrf2 and HO-1 expression. These results indicate that HO-1 expression induced by NO donors in rat articular chondrocytes is due to NO-mediated peroxynitrite rather than NO.

  • When olfactory placodes are transplanted at stages 23/24 from Xenopus laevis to Xenopus borealis hosts of the same age, it is possible to distinguish the cell populations of the host and donor due to the peculiar nuclear Q bands specific to X. borealis. I have replaced the eye anlage in each of a number of X. borealis with the transplanted olfactory placode of an individual X. laevis, or vice versa. In most instances, the placode of the donor fuses with that of the host. When fusion occurs, but not when the host and donor orqans grow separately, the cells of the donor were replaced gradually and according to a characteristic pattern by cells of the host. The basal cells of the donor were the first to be replaced, followed by the more matured cells of the sensory epithelium. This cellular substitution, proceeding in an orderly fashion from bottom to upper layers of the epithelium, depends on the fusion of the two organs. This observation suggests intercellular contacts in the mitotic zone of the two organs favor the host's cells over those of the donor.

  • The majority of dyes belong to the chromophoric class known as donor-acceptor systems. The essential structural feature of such systems is the presence of one or more electron donating groups conjugated to one or more electron withdrawing groups via an unsaturated bridge. The pyrazolin-5-one system is an effective electron acceptor residue, and can also act as a weak electron donor. In our experiments, the various symmetrical and unsymmetrical H-chromophores were synthesized in the indoxyl, imidazo[1,2-a]pyridin-2-one, pyrazolin-5-one, and pyridin-2,6-dione residues, resulting in cross-conjugated donor-acceptor systems. And the visible light absorption was then associated with the migration of electron density from the donor region of the molecule to the acceptor region. Also, it was useful to prepare related non-cross-conjugated donor acceptor chromophores by combining these residues with other electron donor or acceptor moieties. For convenience such chromophores are referred to as merocyanines.

  • Background In this study, we characterize the morbidity at the donor-site of partial second toe pulp free flaps in terms of wound management as well as long-term outcomes. Methods A single-institutional retrospective review was performed for patients who had undergone partial second toe pulp free flap transfer to the fingertip. Patient charts were reviewed for infection, skin necrosis, wound dehiscence, and hematoma for the donor site. Additionally, a questionnaire survey was given to patients who had a follow-up of longer than 1 year to characterize long-term postoperative pain and appearance. Results The review identified a total of 246 cases. Early wound complications were significant for wound dehiscence (n=8) and hematoma (n=5) for a wound complication rate of 5.3%. The questionnaire was distributed to 109 patients, and 54 patients completed the survey. Out of these 54 patients, 15 patients continued to have donor-site pain (28%) at a mean follow-up period of 32.4 months. However, the pain intensity was relatively low in the range between 2 to 5, on a 0-10 scale. None of these patients felt this donor-site pain interfered significantly with daily activity, nor did any patient require pain medications of any type. Donor-site appearance was satisfactory to most patients. Conclusions The partial second toe pulp flap was associated with low rates of wound complications and favorable long-term outcomes. Given the functional and aesthetic gain in the recipient finger, donor-site morbidities appear acceptable in this patient population. This study can be helpful in counseling patients regarding donor-site morbidity during the informed consent process.
