The Effects of Airline Deregulation: A Comparative Analysis

  • Purpose - The purpose of this study is to explore and examine the effects of airline deregulation in the United States and South Korea as a comparative analysis. The study focuses on identifying the purposes of airline deregulation and analyzing its benefits and consequences. Research Design, Data, and Methodology - This is a case study, a comparative method, which analyzes and measures the benefits and disadvantages of airline deregulation in both the United States and South Korea. Results - Airline deregulation removed unnecessary and ineffective government controls, resulting in more efficient airline industries in both countries. However, the negative consequences are much greater than the benefits of airline deregulation. Conclusion - The purpose of airline deregulation was to foster an efficient and effective environment in airline industry, and clear evidence of the positive intended effects of airline deregulation e.g., increasing domestic competition, decreasing airfare, increasing productivity, and removing unnecessary government regulations in the beginning of airline deregulation. However, the current state of airline industry in both countries depicts only the consequences of airline deregulation.

저비용항공사의 항공서비스 개선을 위한 과제 (Suggestions what need to be done to improve the airline services of the LCC)

  • The study aims to review airline services like the domestic line performance, the general flight fares and website discount fairs, reservation cancellation and cancellation charges, reroutings and personal discount system of the low cost carriers(LCC), and suggest what needs to be done to improve the airline service. The improvements to be made by the LCC should include increasing regular domestic lines, providing information compared for consumers, relieving the toll to call the service center, revising the conditions on reservation cancellation penalty, rerouting charges, revising the consumer dispute resolution standards, and promoting frequent fliers program. Development strategies should be established that can boost consumer benefits through the improvement of the airline services.

국내외 여객수송수단의 동향과 변동률 분석 (Analysis of Trends and Rate of Change in Domestic and Foreign Passenger Traffic)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 주요 여객수단인 철도, 지하철, 국내해운, 국내항공, 국제해운, 국제항공의 동향과 변동률을 분석하는데 있다. 사용된 자료는 통계청 국가통계포털 "국내통계, 주제별통계, 교통.물류"에서 자료를 선택하였다. 분석 기간은 1999년부터 2020년까지 총 22년간이며 전년대비 연간 변동률을 산출하였다. 기술통계량에서 국제해운과 국제항공은 상대적으로 변동성이 크게 나타난 반면 철도와 지하철은 작게 나타났다. 상승률 분석에서 국제항공과 국제해운은 2019년도 539%와 368%에서 코로나로 인해 2020년에 85%와 20%로 크게 하락하였다. 국제항공과 국제해운은 2020년에 크게 하락하였으나 코로나의 충격이 사라지면서 다시 상승할 것으로 기대하면서 이에 대비하는 전략이 필요할 것으로 보인다. 국제 무역이 다시 증가하고 해외여행이 다시 활력을 찾아가면서 기존의 상승세가 계속 이어질 것으로 예상해 본다.

세계민항계의 최적 동향과 우리나라 복수민항체제의 발전방향 (The Recent Trend in the World Air Transport Market and a Two-Airline Policy in Korea)

  • Deregulation privatization regionalism and globalization are the specific examples of the recent trends in the world air transport market. As encouraged by the international trends and the domestic policy of promoting market mechanism Korean has been driving a two-airline policy since 1989. But due to the absence of experience and philosophy about the airline co-mpetition both Korean government and the two airlines have been criticized for failing to set fair-competition rules and for struggling to secure air service rights regardless of national interest. Therefore this study shows the costs and benefits of a two-airline policy in a small count-ry reviews the empirical studies about the cost structure of American and Canadian airlines and analyzes the economic consequences of allocating air service rights between two airlines. The policy recommendations are (1) removing government restrictions and expanding ai-rport facilities to develop the domestic market (2) retaining the two-airline policy in the in-ternational market (3) increasing traffic density rather than expanding network for the small airline (4) improving comparative advantage through a global alliance and a technological innovation for the big airline and (5) building an official committee for co-ordinating the two airlines' interests.

  • 본 연구에서는 항공이용객이 접하게 되는 일련의 항공사 선택 속성요인을 세부적으로 살펴보아 체계적인 서비스 요인의 분석을 하고자 하며, 이 세부적인 선택속성 중에서 어느 부분이 가장 중요한 요인이며 가장 이용자의 요구수준이 높은지를 측정하고자 했다 즉, 계층화 분석기법 (Analytic Hierarchy Process ; AHP)을 활용하여 국내선 항공사를 선택하는 항공이용객의 항공사선택에 영향을 미치는 요인을 분석하였다. 선택속성의 설정은 선행연구 및 국내선 항공시장의 특성을 고려하여 마케팅, 예매서비스, 공항서비스, 기내서비스, 부대서비스의 5개의 상위선택기준과 상위선택기준의 하위단계인 17가지 세부적인 선택요인을 결정하였다. 하위단계의 선택속성은 1) 프로모션/이벤트, 2) 홍보/광고, 3) 신속하고 안정적인 예매, 4) 예매의 편리성, 5) 예매의 신축성, 6) 선호좌석배정 7) 수하물처리서비스, 8) 비정상운항시 후속조치, 9) 탑승라운지 운영, 10) 기내분위기, 11) 음료서비스. 12) 읽을거리 13) 좌석공간. 14) 비즈니스석 운영, 15) 다양한 제휴사, 16) 마일리지제도 운영, 17) IT 서비스이다. 분석결과 첫째, 국내선 항공사 이용객의 선택속성 중 상위단계의 5가지 선택기준에서 공항서비스가 국내선 항공교통 이용객에게 중요한 선택기준이 되고 있으나, 예매서비스 및 기내서비스도 상당히 중요한 기준임을 알 수 있었다. 소득수준별 상위단계 선택기준 및 하위단계 선택속성의 중요도 분석에서는 저소득자와 중소득자 그리고 고소득자 간에는 선택속성의 중요도의 차이가 나타났으며, 항공사는 이러한 차이를 반영한 고객지향적인 경쟁우위 방안이 요구된다 하겠다.

국내 항공사 운항승무원 안전문화 인식도 비교 연구 (A Comparative Study on the Perception of Safety Culture of Airline Flight Crew in Korea)

  • Despite the development of the aviation industry, aircraft accidents caused by human errors by flight crews continue to occur. In order to reduce such human error accidents, it is important to strengthen flight-related regulations and establish a safety culture in which pilots themselves seek to ensure flight safety, rather than requiring flight crew members to follow them. In this study, the sub-concept of safety culture was classified into three latent variables (safety management, safety atmosphere, and process culture) and eight measured variables to investigate the safety culture awareness of domestic flight crew. The survey results were analyzed by type of airline and flight crew. The purpose of this study is to present a plan to improve the performance of revitalizing the safety culture of domestic flight crew through an empirical comparative analysis according to the number of flight hours and years of service at the airline.

A Study of Airline Marketing Communication

  • Purpose - The purpose of this study is to set up the elements of the airline marketing communication and find out the effect of each element on brand trust. It also aims to figure out how brand trust affects the customer's repurchase intention and WOM intention respectively, and whether repurchase intention has an influence on WOM intention. Eventually, this research intends to provide not only academic but practical application of the research by figuring out the marketing communication factors. Research design, data, and methodology - The survey for this study has been conducted for about 2 months, targeting those who have flown with either domestic or foreign airlines. The number of 249 surveys were distributed and the total number of specimens is 244. Data analysis methods were verifiable factor, discriminant, nomological, and structural equation model analysis. Result - Only advertisement, promotion and WOM have a positive effect on brand trust while publicity has no impact on brand trust. Brand trust was found to have a positive effect on repurchase intention. Also Brand trust also has a positive effect on WOM intention. Finally repurchase intention has a positive effect on WOM intention. Conclusion - There are insufficient existing studies of airline marketing communication which has the direct influence on brand trust. Therefore, the study provided the theoretical foundation of airline marketing communication elements that directly effect on airline brand trust.

대학 부설 비행훈련원의 효율적인 조종인력 양성을 위한 교육효과성 측정 연구 (A Research on the Educational Effect to Train Pilots Efficiently at the Flight Training Academy in a University)

  • Due to the rapid growth of domestic and overseas airline markets, the demand for airline pilots has also been growing fast. Meeting such a market needs, central government, Ministry of Land and Transportation has set up civil airline pilot training center at Ulgin airport to train and provide the market with commercial airline pilots. Not only central government but universities in Korea also have tried to train pilots by operating flight training academies. Even though there are more than a dozen of flight training centers including colleges and private academies, there have been less efforts to measure and evaluate the effectiveness of the flight training school's curriculums compared to other scholar majors in a university. Therefore this paper tried to evaluate the educational effectiveness of the curriculums using the Kirk-Patrick measurement model, which has been regarded as one of the most popular and accurate measurement tool for an empirical research in social science. According to the empirical research, it was found out the inter-personal relationship between an instructor pilot and flight trainee was perceived as the most important factor to have an impact on learning abilities and student's behaviors.

국내 저비용 항공사 이용승객의 안전에 관한 인식 연구 (A Study of Passenger's Safety Perception on Domestic Low-Cost Carriers)

  • This paper examines the safety perception of passengers on low cost carriers which has made several accidents and incidents at the early stage of their business. The concept of low cost carrier is becoming more important to airline industry in Korea. This study achieves the first selecting attribute among airline service factors on domestic flights and try to indicate that how much the passengers trust in the safety of low cost carriers. It is also sets the comparative safety awareness between low cost carriers and two full service national carriers in domestic market. The safety perception of aircraft type can be a major factor for LCC choice in Korea due to frequent accidents and incidents for last two years. More than 60% of LCC passengers have increasingly considered the safety after recent accidents. The low cost airlines' images of the passengers showed that the first image of the LCC was the fare and the second image was safety. This study indicates that most of the LCC travelers will use the international low cost airlines when LCC extend their destination to adjacent countries. For the accomplishment of the low cost carriers' competitiveness in domestic market, they have to try to get rid of bad image for safety and pay extra attention to find out better services other than the safety and develop other strategies to compete against existing full service carriers.

감정노동에 따른 공항서비스 직원의 심리적 메커니즘에 관한 실증연구 (An Empirical Study on the Airline Service Employees' Psychological Mechanism according to the Emotional Labor)

  • Purpose - Service employees who work at airline check-in counters in airport are typically employed to undergo emotional labor. Emotional labor of airport service employees is an important managerial issue that must be solved. This study attempts to examine the underlying mechanism of emotional labor on turnover intention. It focuses on the consequences of emotional labor of service employees. The purpose of this study is to examine and empirically test how the two-types of emotional labor(deep-acting & surface-acting) of service employees differently affect the level of their job satisfaction and job stress. It also investigates the relationship between job satisfaction, job stress, and turnover intention. For this purpose, first, this study identified the structural relationship between emotional labor, job satisfaction, job stress, and turnover intention. Second, it investigated the mediating effects of job satisfaction between deep-acting and turnover intention. Research design, data, and methodology - To empirically test these structural relationships among research variables, data were collected by a interview from service manager of domestic airline companies and survey from 179 service employees who are working at single domestic airline check-in counters in airports in Korea using a self-rating questionnaire with total 19 items dealing with emotional labor, job satisfaction, job stress, and turnover intention. To test the research hypotheses, collected data were analyzed by confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and structure equation model (SEM). Results - This study obtains meaningful research results. The results from this study are as follows. First, deep-acting has a positive effect on job satisfaction, whereas, deep-acting has a negative effect on job satisfaction. Second, surface-acting has a positive effect on job stress, whereas, the effects of surface-acting on job satisfaction did not show statistically significant result. Also, job satisfaction has partial mediating roles to the relationship between deep-acting and turnover intention. Conclusions - Based on the results of this empirical study, emotional labor of service employees is one of the key factors influencing their job satisfaction and job stress. In particular, deep-acting is the important factor in emotional labor to increase job satisfaction and reduce job stress. Finally, theoretical, managerial implications, and research limitations are mentioned in discussion parts.
