  • The design basis is being shifted from strength to deformation in modern performance-based design codes. This paper presents a practical method for optimization of eccentrically braced steel frames, based on the concept of uniform deformation theory (UDT). This is done by gradually shifting inefficient material from strong parts of the structure to the weak areas until a state of uniform deformation is achieved. In the first part of this paper, UDT is implemented on 3, 5 and 10 story eccentrically braced frames (EBF) subjected to 12 earthquake records representing the design spectrum of ASCE/SEI 7-10. Subsequently, the optimum strength-distribution patterns corresponding to these excitations are determined, and compared with four other loading patterns. Since the optimized frames have uniform distribution of deformation, they undergo less damage in comparison with code-based designed structures while having minimum structural weight. For further investigation, the 10 story EBF is redesigned using four different loading patterns and subjected to 12 earthquake excitations. Then a comparison is made between link rotations of each model and those belonging to the optimized one which revealed that the optimized EBF behaves generally better than those designed by other loading patterns. Finally, efficiency of each loading pattern is evaluated and the best one is determined.

  • Generally, the training set of maximum $m{\times}L(m+f)$ patterns in the pattern recognition method is required for the real-time bus reconfiguration strategy when a main transformer fault occurs in the distribution substation. Accordingly, to make the application of pattern recognition method possible, the size of the training set must be reduced as efficient level. This Paper proposes a methodology which obtains the minimized training set by applying the pattern clustering method to load patterns of the main transformers and feeders during selected period and to obtain bus reconfiguration strategy based on it. The MaxMin distance clustering algorithm is adopted as the pattern clustering method. The proposed method reduces greatly the number of load patterns to be trained and obtain the satisfactory pattern matching success rate because that it generates the typical pattern clusters by appling the pattern clustering method to load patterns of the main transformers and feeders during selected period. The proposed strategy is designed and implemented in Visual C++ MFC. Finally, availability and accuracy of the proposed methodology and the design is verified from diversity simulation reviews for typical distribution substation.

  • This paper investigates the effect of linear and non-linear distribution of carbon nanotube volume fraction in the FG-CNTRC beams on the critical buckling by using higher-order shear deformation theories. Here, the material properties of the CNTRC beams are assumed to be graded in the thickness direction according to a new exponential power law distribution in terms of the carbon nanotube volume fractions. The single-walled carbon nanotube is aligned and distributed in the polymeric matrix with different patterns of reinforcement; the material properties of the CNTRC beams are described by using the rule of mixture. The governing equations are derived through using Hamilton's principle. The Navier solution method is used under the specified boundary conditions for simply supported CNTRC beams. The mathematical models provided in this work are numerically validated by comparison with some available results. New results of critical buckling with the non-linear distribution of CNT volume fraction in different patterns are presented and discussed in detail, and compared with the linear distribution. Several aspects of beam types, CNT volume fraction, exponent degree (n), aspect ratio, etc., are taken into this investigation. It is revealed that the influences of non-linearity distribution in the beam play an important role to improve the mechanical properties, especially in buckling behavior. The results show that the X-Beam configuration is the strongest among all different types of CNTRC beams in supporting the buckling loads.

  • As the interests in eco-friendly energy has increased, the interests in Electric Vehicles(EVs) are increasing as well. Moreover, due to the government's economic support for EVs, penetration level of it has rapidly increased. These sharp increases, however, induce various problems in distribution system, such as voltage/frequency variations, peak demand increasement, demand control, etc. To minimize these possible matters, lots of research have conducted. Nevertheless, most of it assumed extremely important factors, such as numbers and charging patterns of EVs. It inevitably results in errors in their research, and thus make it difficult to prevent the possible matters from EVs. In this paper, therefore, we use actual EVs charging data from KEPCO, and analysis and deduction of it were conducted. The simulations were carried out for four aspect(season, region, purpose).

  • The seasonal distribution and abundance of larval fishes in the central and southern surface waters of the East Sea were investigated seasonally during 2011 and 2012. During the study period, the larvae of 39 species belonging to 26 families were collected. The most abundant species were Engraulisjaponicus, which accounted for 97.5% of the total number of individuals collected. Scomber japonicus, Clupea pallasii, Chromis notatus, Cottidae sp., and Coryphaena hippurus accounted for 1.7% of the total. The number of species, number of individuals, and species diversity indices fluctuated with the season. The peak number of species and individuals occurred in September and May, respectively. The larvae of the main species displayed a distinct spatial distribution and seasonal occurrence patterns. E. japonicus and C. notatus widely distributed throughout the study area. During summer and autumn, S. japonicus and C. hippurus were abundant in southern and offshore regions. C. pallasii occurred only in the southern region during winter. The seasonal occurrence and patterns of distribution of the larvae of main species seems were correlated with surface water temperature.

  • Purpose: This study aims to not only measure the elderly welfare supply index but investigate spatial patterns and determinants of local elderly welfare services in South Korea. Research design, data, and methodology: The index for local elderly welfare services is measured by employing standardized scores for critical variables related to elderly welfare. The present study utilized the GIS technique and Moran's I index to examine spatial patterns of elderly welfare services. The determinants of local elderly welfare service are analyzed by a series of regression models using R. Results: Spatial imbalance and asymmetric distribution were serious in the supply of elderly welfare service. It was also confirmed that the factors affecting the level of welfare services for the elderly vary depending on the type of service. In particular, the higher the proportion of the elderly population and the social welfare budget, the lower the level of welfare services for the elderly. Conclusions: Given the circumstance of spatial mismatch between supply and demand for elderly welfare services, it is necessary to consider and provide policy tactics about how the economic benefits and welfare budgets generated in the region can contribute to strengthening the welfare service system for the elderly.

  • Micro-LEDs can be applied to various parts of a product. However, it has disadvantages compared to general LEDs in large displays such as low efficiency, intensity, and contrast ratio, among others, owing to their short history of study. The simulations were carried out using ray-tracing software to investigate the change in light intensity and light distribution according to pattern shapes on the sapphire substrate of the flip-chip micro-LED (FC μ-LED) array. Three patterns-concave square patterns, convex square patterns, and Ag coated convex patterns-which existed on the opposite side of FC μ-LEDs (115 ㎛ × 115 ㎛) array, were applied. The intensity of FC μ-LEDs on the center of the receivers depends on the pattern depth with shape. The concave square patterns having FC μ-LEDs arrays show that decreasing intensity as the patterns depth. On the contrary, the convex square patterns having FC μ-LEDs arrays shows that increasing intensity as the patterns depth. In addition, the highest intensity shows that FC μ-LEDs having Ag-coated convex patterns on the opposite side of sapphire lead to a reduction in light crosstalk owing to the Ag film.

  • In this paper, we propose new smoothing filters, i.e., occluding patterns that can accurately correct disparities of occluded areas in the estimated disparity map. An image is composed of several layers and each layer presents similar disparity. Furthermore, the distribution of the estimated disparities has a specific direction around the boundary of the occlusion, and this distribution presents the different direction with respect to the left- and the right-based disparity map. However, typical smoothing filters, such as mean filter and median filter, did not take into account those characteristic. So, they can decrease some error, but they cannot guarantee the accuracy of the corrected disparity. On the contrary, occluding patterns can accurately correct disparities of occluded areas because they consider both the characteristic that occlusion occurs and the characteristic that disparities of the occlusion are ranged, from estimated disparity maps with respect to the left and the right images. We made experiments on occluding patterns with some real stereo image set, and as a result, we can correct disparities of occluded areas more accurately than typical smoothing filters did.

  • Recently among several tennis techniques forehand stroke has been greatly changed in the aspect of spin, grip and stance. The most fundamental factor among the three factors is the stance which consists of open, square and closed stance and it is very important to know the patterns of plantar pressure distribution for the better understanding of forehand stroke. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the change of plantar pressure distribution according to close, square and open stance patterns during forehand stroke in tennis. Three high school tennis players were recruited for the study and required to perform forehand stroke five consecutive trials in the condition of open, square and close stance. The forehand strokes were filmed with two digital video cameras and measured with pedar system for plantar pressure. The plantar regions under the foot were divided into 3 regions, which were forefoot, midfoot, and rear foot.. In conclusion, the first hypothesis, "The plantar pressure of close stance during forehand stroke would be distributed more largely to the left foot.", was rejected and the result showed that The plantar pressure of close stance during forehand stroke was distributed transferring from right foot to left foot similar to square stance. The second hypothesis, "The plantar pressure of square stance during forehand stroke would be distributed transferring from right foot to left foot." was accepted. The third hypothesis, "The plantar pressure of open stance during forehand stroke would be distributed more largely to the right foot.", was accepted.

  • Asymmetrical stance posture, balance, and gait disturbance are common problems in hemiplegic patients. Posterior leaf springs (PLS) are frequently prescribed to correct these problems. Recently, anterior leaf springs (ALS) have also been prescribed, but only limited studies have been performed to investigate the effects of ALS. The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of three conditions, i.e., wearing an ALS, wearing a PLS, and not wearing an AFO (ankle foot orthosis),: on 1) the distribution of weight bearing on the affected side, 2) standing balance, and 3) the gait patterns of hemiplegic patients. Eleven hemiplegic patients (10 men and 1 woman) participated in this study. The data were analyzed by the Friedman test. The results were as follows: 1) More weight bearing on the affected leg was observed in the ALS and PLS conditions than in the condition without an AFO. No significant difference between the ALS and PLS conditions was found. 2) There were statistically significant differences in the composite equilibrium scores (CES) among the three conditions. The CES in the PLS condition was significantly higher than in the ALS condition or the condition without an AFO. 3) Gait patterns improved significantly in the ALS and PLS conditions. No statistically significant difference between the ALS and PLS conditions was found. These results suggest that both ALS and PLS effectively improve the distribution of weight bearing on the affected side, standing balance, and gait patterns of hemiplegic patients. Further study using three-dimensional kinematic analysis and dynamic electromyography is needed to support these findings.
