  • The purpose of the study is designing and implementing 'Sampling Distributions Simulation' to help students to understand concepts of sampling distributions. This computer simulation is developed to help students understand sampling distributions more easily. 'Sampling Distributions Simulation' consists of 4 sessions. 'The first session - Confidence level and confidence intervals - includes checking if the intended confidence level is actually achieved by the real relative frequency for the obtained sample confidence intervals containing population mean. This will give the students clearer idea about confidence level and confidence intervals in addition to the role of sampling distribution of the sample means among those. 'The second session - Sampling Distributions - helps understand sampling distribution of the sample means, through the simulation method to make comparison between the histogram of sampling distributions and that of the population. The third session - The Central Limit Theorem - includes calculating the means of the samples taken from a population which follows a uniform distribution or follows a Bernoulli distribution and then making the histograms of those means. This will provides comprehension of the central limit theorem, which mentions about the sampling distribution of the sample means when the sample size is very large. The forth session - the normal approximation to the binomial distribution - helps understand the normal approximation to the binomial distribution as an alternative version of central limit theorem. With the practical usage of the shareware 'Sampling Distributions Simulation', we expect students to have a new vision on the sampling distribution and to get more emphasis on it. With the sound understandings on the sampling distributions, more accurate and profound statistical inferences are expected. And the role of the sampling distribution in the inferences should be more deeply appreciated.

  • Wood dust is created when machines are used to cut or shape wood materials. Industries of high risk of wood dust exposure are sawmills, dimension mills, furniture industries, and carpenters, etc. Health effects associated with wood dust exposure includes dermatitis, allergic respiratory effects and cancer. Health effects of wood dus t are mainly depend on the concentration, dust size and exposure time. This study were carried out to evaluate the concentration and particle size distribution of wood dust during working processes. The subjects of this study were 53 workers exposed to wood dust in 7 furniture factories and 5 musical instruments, and 5 sawmill factories. The average total wood dust concentrations measured by personal cascade impactor were $1.82{\pm}2.31mg/m^3$ in primary manufacture, $3.59{\pm}1.72mg/m^3$ in s econdary manufacture, $5.09{\pm}1.46mg/m^3$ in sanding operation. Mass median diameters of hardwoods dust were $3.36{\mu}m$ in primary manufacture, $4.25{\mu}m$ in secondary manufacture, $4.21{\mu}m$ in sanding operation. softwoods dust were $3.39{\mu}m$ in primary manufacture, $4.34{\mu}m$ in secondary manufacture. Particle size distributions showed a nearly the same pattern in each working processes. The sample concentration of all hardwood dust exceeded the Threshold Limit Value(TLV) and 20.8% of the softwood dust exceeded the Threshold Limit Value. The range of size distribution were $0.5-10{\mu}m$ in the soft and hardwood dust. The respirable dust of soft and hardwood took up 59% and above. Therefore new threshold limit value for wood dust should be needed in Korea. Also, it should be done for various studies on health effects related to occupational exposure of wood dust.

  • The coastal water is a space where salmon (Oncorhynchus keta), critical energy-conveying mediator, stay to adapt to different environments while traveling between ocean and river ecosystems for spawning and growth. The mid-eastern coast of Korea (MECW) is the southern limit of salmon distributed in the North Pacific Ocean. Understanding the distribution and migration characteristics of salmon in the MECW is important for the prediction of changes in the amount and distribution of salmon related to changes in the future marine environment. We analyzed the relationship between the salmon migratory timing ascending the Wangpi river and change in vertical seawater temperature and tidal elevation. Overall results highlight that (1) Salmon began to ascend the river when the sea surface water temperature (SST) decreased below 20℃; (2) The number of salmon ascending the river increased when the temperature difference between the upper and lower layers decreased, but decreased when the temperature difference was higher than 5℃; (3) The number of salmon ascending the river peaked, when the SST was 18℃-19℃ and sea levels rose at high tide. This study provide important insight into predicting changes in the ecosystem energy circulation through climate change at its southern distribution limit.

  • Member force, strain and stress distribution of a section are obtained for prestressed steel and concrete(PSSC) composite bridge subjected to dead and live load in order to interpret the effect of prestressing and deformation of tendon. The stress and strain distribution and moment capacity are obtained for both noncomposite and composite section and for allowable stress limit state, yield limit state and strength limit state. Reliability analysis is conducted after assuming limit states for deflection, stress and flexural strength. Comparing that the reliability index for stress is near 0 for example section which is designed to satisfy the allowable stress exactly, the reliability indexes for deflection and flexural strength are high. Reliability of PSSC girder which is designed based on allowable stress of bridge design code is high for deflection and flexural strength.

  • Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF), discovered by Stanley Cohen in 1960, has a potential healing effect for wounds and bums. Considering wound care, in order to avoid physical stress at the wound surface and efficiently apply EGF, the need for viscous spraying solutions was essential. Viscous spraying solutions containing EGF were prepared by utilizing viscosity-building polymer, poloxamer 407, and by introducing liposome systems. On the other hand, EGF is purified on reverse HPLC gradient program with the mobile solvent of acetonitrile. It is necessary to observe liposomal EGF changes as the acetonitrile contents varied in order to introduce liposome systems at the step of EGF solution (at the time of EGF purifying). By evaluating the size distribution and entrapment efficiency of EGF liposome, it was possible to detemine the limit contents of acetonitrile and establish the optimal conditions for solution formulations. It has been revealed that, as the acetonitrile content increases, mean diameter of EGF liposomes increased and the width of size distribution tends to decrease. The limit contents of acetonitrile were 10%, since there was little difference to the acetonitrile free liposomes.

  • This paper presents an improved grid voltage control strategy for wind farms with doubly-fed induction generators (DFIGs) connected to distribution networks based on an analysis of the operation limits of DFIG systems. A modified reactive power limit calculation method in different operation states is proposed and a reactive power control strategy during grid voltage dips/rises is further discussed. A control strategy for compensating unbalanced grid voltage, based on DFIG systems, by injecting negative sequence current into the grid through the grid side converter (GSC) is proposed. In addition, the negative current limit of the GSC is discussed. The distribution principle of the negative sequence current among the different DFIG systems in a wind farm is also introduced. The validity of the proposed voltage control strategy is demonstrated by Matlab/Simulink simulations. It is shown that the stability of a wind farm and the power grid can be improved with the proposed strategy.

  • On the basis of Hoek-Brown failure criterion, a numerical solution for the shape of collapsing block in the rectangular cavity subjected to seepage forces is obtained by upper bound theorem of limit analysis. The seepage forces obtained from the gradient of excess pore pressure distribution are taken as external loadings in the limit analysis, and the pore pressure is easily calculated with pore pressure coefficient. Thus the seepage force is incorporated into the upper bound analysis as a work rate of external force. The upper solution of the shape of collapsing block is derived by virtue of variational calculation. In order to verify the validity of the method proposed in the paper, the result when the pore pressure coefficient equals zero, and only hydrostatic pressure is taken into consideration, is compared with that of previous work. The results show good effectiveness in calculating the collapsing block shape subjected to seepage forces. The influence of parameters on the failure mechanisms is investigated.

  • Performed here is a comparative assessment study for the generation of the pressure- temperature (P/T) limit curve of the reactor vessel. Using the cooling or heating rate and vessel material properties, the stress distribution is obtained to calculate stress intensity factors, which are compared with the material fracture toughness to determine the relations between operating pressure and temperature during cool-down and heat-up. P/T limit curves are generated with respect to crack direction, clad thickness, toughness curve, cooling or heating rate and neutron fluence, and their results are compared.

  • Natural gas, which is getting more important as a fuel, should be liquefied and shipped in a special tank. During transportation, a spill of liquefied natural gas(LNG) could occur by a collision or even an accident. As a result, violent explosion called the superheat-limit explosion(SLE) can take place in some cases, unexpectedly. Such explosion may result from the formation of a superheated liquid which has attained the superheat-limit temperature when hot(water) and cold(LNG) liquids come into contact. Natural gas mixtures can be considered as discrete light components plus continuous heavy fractions where several continuous distribution function can be adopted. This work is aiming at prediction of the superheat-limit explosion condition by suing continuous thermodynamics development of algorithm to predict.
