  • Improved estimates of populations at risk for quick and effective response to natural and man-made disasters require spatial disaggregation of zonal population data because of the spatial mismatch problem in areal units between census and impact zones. This paper implements a dasymetric surface model to facilitate spatial disaggregation of the population of a census block group into populations associated with each constituent pixel and evaluates the performance of the surface-based spatial disaggregation model visually and statistically. The surface-based spatial disaggregation model employed geographic information systems (GIS) to enable dasymetric interpolation to be guided by satellite-derived land use and land cover data as additional information about the geographic distributor of population. In the spatial disaggregation, percent cover based empirical sampling and areal weighting techniques were used to objectively determine dasymetric weights for each grid cell. The dasymetric population surface for the Atlanta metropolitan area was generated by the surface-based spatial disaggregation model. The accuracy of the dasymetric population surface was tested on census counts using the root mean square error (RMSE) and an adjusted RMSE. The errors related to each census track and block group were also visualized by percent error maps. Results indicate that the dasymetric population surface provides high-precision estimates of populations as well as the detailed spatial distribution of population within census block groups. The results also demonstrate that the population surface largely tends to overestimate or underestimate population for both the rural and forested and the urban core areas.

  • This study aimed to analyze open access features of 1,890 Korean scientific journals registered in the Korea Citation Index (KCI). To this end, this study classified open access features of the target scientific journals into two main aspects, free access and free redistribution. The analysis results indicated that the target scientific journals had strong free access aspects. Based on websites, 67% of the target scientific journals allowed for free access without a login process and based on free database, 48% provided free access. On the other hand, the target scientific journals had weaker free redistribution aspects compared to their free access aspects. Only 14% of them offered the CC (creative commons) license. Another finding was that there were clear differences in open access aspects by academic field. Medicine, pharmacy, natural science, agriculture, fisheries, oceanography, and engineering had stronger open access aspects than humanities, sociology, arts, physical education, and interdisciplinary science. It appears that the difference was caused by the presence or absence of organizations supporting distribution of scientific journals of the fields concerned. To narrow the gap, it is recommended that the open access governance system is established to set up open access policies for Korean scientific journals regardless of academic fields and to support them.

  • The statistical indexes such as RMSE (Root Mean Square Error), Mean Bias error, and IOA (Index of agreement) are used to evaluate 3 Dimensional wind and temperature fields predicted by operational meteorological model RAMS (Regional Atmospheric Meteorological System) implemented in CARIS (Chemical Accident Response Information System) for the dispersion forecast of hazardous chemicals in case of the chemical accidents in Korea. The operational atmospheric model, RAMS in CARIS are designed to use GDAPS, GTS, and AWS meteorological data obtained from KMA (Korean Meteorological Administration) for the generation of 3-dimensional initial meteorological fields. The predicted meteorological variables such as wind speed, wind direction, temperature, and precipitation amount, during 19 ∼ 23, August 2002, are extracted at the nearest grid point to the meteorological monitoring sites, and validated against the observations located over the Korean peninsula. The results show that Mean bias and Root Mean Square Error are 0.9 (m/s), 1.85 (m/s) for wind speed at 10 m above the ground, respectively, and 1.45 ($^{\circ}C$), 2.82 ($^{\circ}C$) for surface temperature. Of particular interest is the distribution of forecasting error predicted by RAMS with respect to the altitude; relatively smaller error is found in the near-surface atmosphere for wind and temperature fields, while it grows larger as the altitude increases. Overall, some of the overpredictions in comparisons with the observations are detected for wind and temperature fields, whereas relatively small errors are found in the near-surface atmosphere. This discrepancies are partly attributed to the oversimplified spacing of soil, soil contents and initial temperature fields, suggesting some improvement could probably be gained if the sub-grid scale nature of moisture and temperature fields was taken into account. However, IOA values for the wind field (0.62) as well as temperature field (0.78) is greater than the 'good' value criteria (> 0.5) implied by other studies. The good value of IOA along with relatively small wind field error in the near surface atmosphere implies that, on the basis of current meteorological data for initial fields, RAMS has good potentials to be used as a operational meteorological model in predicting the urban or local scale 3-dimensional wind fields for the dispersion forecast in association with hazardous chemical releases in Korea.

  • This paper presents a method for classifier selection that uses distribution information of the training samples in a small region surrounding a sample. The conventional DCS-LA(Dynamic Classifier Selection - Local Accuracy) selects a classifier dynamically by comparing the local accuracy of each classifier at the test time, which inevitably requires long classification time. On the other hand, in the proposed approach, the best classifier in a local region is stored in the FSA(Feature Space Attribute) table during the training time, and the test is done by just referring to the table. Therefore, this approach enables fast classification because classification is not needed during test. Two feature space attributes are used entropy and density of k training samples around each sample. Each sample in the feature space is mapped into a point in the attribute space made by two attributes. The attribute space is divided into regular rectangular cells in which the local accuracy of each classifier is appended. The cells with associated local accuracy comprise the FSA table. During test, when a test sample is applied, the cell to which the test sample belongs is determined first by calculating the two attributes, and then, the most accurate classifier is chosen from the FSA table. To show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, it is compared with the conventional DCS -LA using the Elena database. The experiments show that the accuracy of the proposed algorithm is almost same as DCS-LA, but the classification time is about four times faster than that.

  • Background: In Malaysia, data from the Malaysian Health Ministry showed colorectal cancer (CRC) to be the second most common type of cancer in 2007-2009, after breast cancer. The same was apparent after looking at males and females cases separately. In the present study, the Geographic Information System (GIS) was employed to describe the distribution of CRC cases in Kuala Lumpur (KL), Malaysia, according to socio-demographic factors (age, gender, ethnicity and district). Materials and Methods: This retrospective review concerned data for patients diagnosed with colorectal cancer in the years 1995 to 2011 collected from the Wilayah Persekutuan Health Office, taken from the cancer notification form (NCR-2), and patient medical records from the Surgical Department, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Centre (UKMMC). A total of 146 cases were analyzed. All the data collected were analysed using ArcGIS version 10.0 and SPSS version 19.0. Results: Patients aged 60 to 69 years accounted for the highest proportion of cases (34.2%) and males slightly predominated 76 (52.1%), Chinese had the highest number of registered cases at 108 (74.0%) and staging revealed most cases in the 3rd and 4th stages. Kernel density analysis showed more cases are concentrated up in the northern area of Petaling and Kuala Lumpur subdistricts. Spatial global pattern analysis by average nearest neighbour resulted in nearest neighbour ratio of 0.75, with Z-score of -5.59, p value of <0.01 and the z-score of -5.59. Spatial autocorrelation (Moran's I) showed clustering significant with p<0.01, Z score 3.14 and Moran's Index of 0.007. When mapping clusters with hotspot analysis (Getis-Ord Gi), hot and cold spots were identified. Hot spot areas fell on the northeast side of KL. Conclusions: This study demonstrated significant spatial patterns of cancer incidence in KL. Knowledge about these spatial patterns can provide useful information to policymakers in the planning of screening of CRC in the targeted population and improvement of healthcare facilities to provide better treatment for CRC patients.

  • Digital TV broadcasting's resolution or tone quality is very excellent than analog broadcasting and has many advantages including various multimedia functions such as home shopping, home banking, internet search, telecommuting, VOD, etc. In this study, it is essential to analyze the regional electromagnetic environment before Digital TV broadcasting, and therefore we analyzed Busan area's limitation using ETRI propagation model. For maintaining high-quality Digital TV signals, we measure electric field intensity wide and far in Busan including mountains area and high-rise buildings. Generally, it has lower value by a standard ETRI propagation model than simulated value about standard model, but distribution pattern are similar with it. Compared theoretical values with the measured results, they have similar values for flat area but very different values for crowded city area and mountains area So we conclude that ETRI propagation model and theoretical model are not suitable for Busan in a free space.

  • The increasing popularity of multimedia streaming services introduces new challenges in content distribution. Especially, it is important to provide the QoS guarantees as they are increasingly expected to support the multimedia applications. The service providers can improve the performance of multimedia streaming by caching the initial segment (prefix) of the popular streams at proxies near the requesting clients. The proxy can initiate transmission to the client while requesting the remainder of the stream from the server. In this paper, in order to apply the prefix caching service based on IETF's RTSP environment to the wireless networks, we propose the effective RTSP handling scheme that can adapt to the radio situation in wireless network and reduce the cutting phenomenon. Also, we propose the traffic based caching algorithm (TSLRU) to improve the performance of caching proxy. TSLRU classifies the traffic into three types, and improve the performance of caching proxy by reflecting the several elements such as traffic types, recency, frequency, object size when performing the replacement decision. In simulation, TSLRU and RTSP handling scheme performs better than the existing schemes in terms of byte hit rate, hit rate, startup latency, and throughput.

  • Since Sensor nodes around a fixed sink have huge concentrated network traffic, the battery consumption of them is increased extremely. Therefore the lifetime of sensor networks is limited because of huge battery consumption. To address this problem, a mobile sink has been studied for load distribution among sensor nodes. Since a mobile sink changes its location in sensor networks continuously, the mobile sink has time limits to communicate with each sensor node and unstable signal strength from each sensor node. Therefore, a fair and stable data collection method between a mobile sink and sensor nodes is necessary in this environment. When some sensor nodes are not able to send data to the mobile sink, a real-time application in sensor networks cannot be provided. In this paper, the new scheduling method, FQMS (Fair Queuing for Mobile Sink), is proposed for fair and stable data collection for mobile sinks in sensor networks. The FQMS guarantees balanced data collecting between sensor nodes for a mobile sink. In out experiments, the FQMS receives more packets from sensor nodes than legacy scheduling methods and provides fair data collection, because moving speed of a mobile sink, distance between a mobile sink and sensor nodes and the number of sensor nodes are considered.

  • Wireless sensor networks (WSN) are composed of sensor nodes and a base station. The sensor nodes deploy a non-accessible area, receive critical information, and transmit it to the base station. The information received is applied to real-time monitoring, distribution, medical service, etc.. Recently, the WSN was extended to mobile wireless sensor networks (MWSN). The MWSN has been applied to wild animal tracking, marine ecology, etc.. The important issues are mobility and energy consumption in MWSN. Because of the limited energy of the sensor nodes, the energy consumption for data transmission affects the lifetime of the network. Therefore, efficient data transmission from the sensor nodes to the base station is necessary for sensing data. This paper, proposes an energy consumption model using two-tier clustering in mobile sensor networks (TTCM). This method divides the entire network into two layers. The mobility problem was considered, whole energy consumption was decreased and clustering methods of recent researches were analyzed for the proposed energy consumption model. Through analysis and simulation, the proposed TTCM was found to be better than the previous clustering method in mobile sensor networks at point of the network energy efficiency.
