  • In this paper, we establish detailed characterizations of the Weibull distribution by the independence of the upper record values. We prove that X $\in$ W EI($\alpha$), if and only if $\frac{X_{U(n)}}{X_{U(n+1)}+X_{U(n)}}$ and $X_{U(n+1)}$ are independent for n $\geq$ 1. And we show that X $\in$ W EI($\alpha$), if and only if $\frac{X_{U(n+1)}-X_{U(n)}}{X_{U(n+1)}+X_{U(n)}}$ and $X_{U(n+1)}$ are independent for n $\geq$ 1.

  • This research has a purpose to achieve experimental data used for design of ventilation systems necessary for indoor air quality control and their operation and management. For the study, spatial concentration distribution of indoor air quality according to pollutant site in a simplified model chamber. In low flow ventilation, flow pattern of indoor air was mainly influenced by diffusion and additionally, spatial distribution was formed by convection. Distribution of ventilation efficiency according to each pattern of model chamber was evaluated. It was confirmed that diffusion patterns of a pollutant among sites were formed, centering around main stream areas of supply and exhaust outlets.

  • A model for a system whose state changes continuously with time is introduced. It is assumed that the system is modeled by a Brownian motion with negative drift and an absorbing barrier at the origin. A repairman arrives according to a Poisson process and repairs the system according to an (s,S) policy, i.e., he increases the state of the system up to S if and only if the state is below s. A partial differential equation is derived for the distribution function of X(t), the state of the system at time t, and the Laplace-Stieltjes transform of the distribution function is obtained by solving the partial differential equation. For the stationary case the explicit expression is deduced for the distribution function of the stationary state of the system.

  • This paper deals with a group acceptance sampling plan for time truncated tests which are based on the total number of failures from the whole group assuming that the life time of an item follows the Dagum (inverse Burr) distribution. This study is developed when a multiple number of items as a group can be tested simultaneously in a tester. The minimum number of groups required for a given group size and acceptance number is determined such that the producer and consumer risks are satisfied simultaneously at the specified quality level, while the termination time and the number of testers are specified. Comparisons are made between the proposed plan and the existing plan on the basis of size of the groups. Two real examples are provided.

  • This paper presents an analysis of SAR(Specific Absorption Rate) distribution characteristics in a head model using FDTD(Finite Difference Time Domain). In this study human head was modelled in four elements-layered structure, consisting of skin, fat, skull and brain. To calculate the electromagnetic fields wihtin the head model, FDTD method was used. In the FDTD method, the electromagnetic wave is analyzed by solving a Maxwell's equations repeatedly. For the calculation, distance between power source and head model increased by 10[m]. Power density and incident electric field intensity were calculated. Based on the incident electric field, the program which calaculated internal electric fields intensity and SAR calculation of the head model were developed. The results of developed program using FDTD were compared with those of a commericial programs, which showed the availability and usefulness of the suggested scheme in this paper.

  • VNA(Very Narrow Aisle) forklift trucks require narrower aisle width than traditional counter-balanced trucks do because only the fork assembly turns in the aisle instead of the entire body of the truck. Substituting the VNA trucks for the existing counter-balanced trucks will result in the significant increase of revenue due to the increased storage capacity in the distribution centers. In this study, we present an economic analysis model for the substitution, in which we present a closed-form equation for the number of racks to stay unmoved, while maximizing the additional storage capacity; and resulting payback period of the substitution. A case study shows the payback period of only 8.1 months, indicating that this substitution is very profitable.

  • Consider a p-variate $(p \geq 4)$ normal distribution with mean $\b{\theta}$ and identity covariance matrix. For estimating $\b{\theta}$ under a quadratic loss we investigate the behavior of risks of Stein-type estimators which shrink the usual estimator toward the mean of observations. By using concavity of the function appearing in the shrinkage factor together with new expectation identities for noncentral chi-squared random variables, a characterization of estimators with nondecreasing risk is obtained.

  • Manufacturing system design poses many challenges for new factory construction. Factories producing the same product may nevertheless have different layouts. The machining line of the engine shop in an automotive factory is a typical flow line, but the layout concept of the line varies among factories. In this paper, a simulation study on the design concept of the manufacturing system for automotive engines is discussed. For comparison, three types of real engine block lines in different factories are analyzed, and three structures of parallel lines are extracted. The effects of failure distribution on the performance measures of three types of parallel line structures are investigated, and some insights are offered regarding the layout concept.

  • In this article, a control chart based on multiple dependent (or deferred) state sampling for the gamma distributed quality characteristic is proposed using the gamma to normal transformation. The proposed control chart has two pairs of control limits, which can be determined by considering the in-control average run length (ARL). The shift in the scale parameter of a gamma distribution is considered and the out-of-control ARL is evaluated. The performance of the proposed chart has been shown for different levels of the parameters of the proposed control chart. It is also shown that the proposed chart is better than the Shewhart chart in terms of ARLs. A case study with a real data has been included for the practical usage of the proposed scheme.

  • The objective of this study is to develop an optimal joint cost from the perspectives of both the manufacturer and the retailer. The integrated production-inventory model with Weibull distribution deteriorating items is assumed to have a constant demand rate. A limited retailer storage space and multiple delivery per order are considered in this model. A numerical example including the sensitivity analysis is given to validate the results of the production-inventory model.
