  • We use a Markov chain model to analyze the Korean Baseball League. We derive the distributions of the number of runs scored and the number of batters that complete their turn at bat in a baseball game using the time inhomogeneous Markov chain. The model is tested with real data produced from the 2011 Korean Baseball League.

  • Consider a multitype queue where queued customers arc served in their order of arrival at a rate which depends on the customer type. Here we calculate the sharp asymptotics of the probability the total number of customers in the queue reaches a high level before emptying. The natural state space to describe this queue is a tree whose branches increase in length as the number of customers in the queue grows. Consequently it is difficult to prove a large deviation principle. Moreover, since service rates depend on the customer type the stationary distribution is not of product form so there is no simple expression for the stationary distribution. Instead, we use a change of measure technique which increases the arrival rate of customers and decreases the departure rate thus making large deviations common.

  • X-Ray Diffraction method that gives direct information about the deformation of crystal lattice is used for the determination of profiles of the residual stress along the depth of heavily boron doped silicon. The residual stress distribution is obtained by XRD method as measuring the deformation of the front surface of the $p^+$ silicon layer fabricated through different etch time. It is determined that the compressive residual stress exists in the most region except the font surface.

  • This paper deals with the loss distribution analysis of 250 kW traction induction motor using a coupled transient finite element method (FEM) and Preisach modeling, which is presented to analyze the characteristics under the effect of saturation and hysteresisloss. The focus of this paper is the efficiency evaluation relative to hysteresis loss, copper loss, etc. on the basis of speed condition a 250 kW Traction Induction Motor. Computer simulation and experimental result for the efficiency using dynamometer show the propriety of the proposed method.

  • This study attempted to find a proper method applicable to simulating practical equifield lines of two-dimensional Accelerate Lithium Migration Technique (ALMT), and evaluate the feasibility of using the theoretical ion migration model of one-dimensional ALMT to predict the ion migration behavior of two-dimensional ALMT. The result showed that the electrolyte or carbon plate can be used as matrix to draw equifield line graph similar to that by using mortar as matrix. Using electrolyte electrode module for simulation has advantages of simple production, easy measurement, rapidness, and economy. The electrolyte module can be used to simulate the equifield line distribution diagram in practical two-dimensional electrode configuration firstly. Then, several equifield line zones were marked, and several subzones under one-dimensional ALMT were separated from various equifield line zones. The theoretical free content distribution of alkali in concrete under two-dimensional electric field effect could be obtained from duration analysis.

  • In this paper, a structural damage identification method (SDIM) is developed for cylindrical shells and the numerically simulated damage identification tests are conducted to study the feasibility of the proposed SDIM. The SDIM is derived from the frequency response function solved from the structural dynamic equations of damaged cylindrical shells. A damage distribution function is used to represent the distribution and magnitudes of the local damages within a cylindrical shell. In contrast with most existing modal parameters-based SDIMs which require the modal parameters measured in both intact and damaged states, the present SDIM requires only the FRF-data measured in the damaged state. By virtue of utilizing FRF-data, one is able to make the inverse problem of damage identification well-posed by choosing as many sets of excitation frequency and FRF measurement point as needed to obtain a sufficient number of equations.

  • This study is conducted for the evaluation of corrosion and lifetime prediction of fire extinguishing pipelines in residential buildings. The fire extinguishing pipeline is made of carbon steel. Twenty-four samples were selected among all the fire extinguishing pipelines in a building; the selection was based on specimenspositions, pipeline diameters, and pipeline thickness. Analysis was conducted by using the results of visual inspection, electrochemical potentiodynamic anodic polarization test, pitting depth measurements, and extreme value statistics with the Gumbel distribution. The maximum pitting depth and remaining life were statistically predicted using extreme value statistics. During visual inspection, pitting corrosion was observed in several samples. In addition, extreme value statistics demonstrated that there were several pipelines that were very sensitive to pitting corrosion. However, the pitting corrosion was not critical in all the pipelines; thus, it was necessary to change only those pipelines that were severely corroded.

  • The effect of the September 2008 global financial crisis weighed heavily on stock markets around the world. The purpose of this study is to empirically investigate the impact of the crisis on Amman Stock Exchange. Event study methodology has been adopted on a period of 24 months, from January 2008 to December 2009. Monthly average abnormal returns across a sample of 52 industrial and services companies have been tested separately. The results reveal that Amman Stock Exchange experienced significant negative abnormal returns in the fourth quarter of the year 2008. However, there were no significant abnormal returns observed thereafter. This means that Amman Stock Exchange managed to overcome its adverse consequences. Since the event study tests for market efficiency, as well, the results show that Amman Stock Exchange reaction is consistent with the semi-strong form of the efficient market hypothesis.

  • In this paper we propose a distribution-free rank test for ordered alternatives in a randomized block design and investigate the properties of the proposed test. The proposed test is an extension of the Page test to allow replications in each cell. Some asymptotic properties including ARE's are investigated. A small sample Monte Carlo study was performed to compare the powers of the test considered in this paper for small samples. The results show that our proposed test is robust and efficient in the case of equally-spaced treatment effects.
