Geographic Variation of Body Color and Morphological Characteristics of Pale Chub, Zacco platypus (Cyprinidae, Pisces) (피라미, Zacco platypus (Cyprinidae, Pisces)의 체색과 형태의 지리적 변이)

  • In comparison of the body color of Zacco platypys from Korea, it was found that there were significant differences among geographical populations in the color of upper eye, snout tip and anterior margin of pectoral fin. In individuals with red upper eye the snout tip was red but in those with black upper eye red color did not appeared on the snout tip. There was no difference between male and female in this characteristic and it was expressed uniformly within the same population. So we divided Z. platypus into two types by the color of upper eye; R type with red upper eye and B type with black upper eye. Red band on anterior margin of pectoral fins appeared in all males of both R and B type populations but in females it appeared only in B type individuals. The two types shown different distribution pattern in Korean Peninsula. R type distributed in almost whole area but B type distributed only in southeastern part of the peninsula: Nakdong, Hyeongsan, Taehwa, Suyeong and Jinjeon River. In analysis of external morphology among two types of Z. platypus from Korea and Z. platypus from Japan, there were no significant differences. But they were relatively well separated in discriminant function analysis.

Efficient Thermal Stress Analysis of Laminated Composite Plates using Enhanced First-order Shear Deformation Theory (일차전단변형이론을 이용한 복합재료 적층평판의 효율적 열응력 해석)

  • In this paper, an efficient yet accurate method for the thermal stress analysis using a first order shear deformation theory(FSDT) is presented. The main objective herein is to systematically modify transverse shear strain energy through the mixed variational theorem(MVT). In the mixed formulation, independent transverse shear stresses are taken from the efficient higher-order zigzag plate theory, and the in-plane displacements are assumed to be those of the FSDT. Moreover, a smooth parabolic distribution through the thickness is assumed in the transverse normal displacement field in order to consider a transverse normal deformation. The resulting strain energy expression is referred to as an enhanced first order shear deformation theory, which is obtained via the mixed variational theorem with transverse normal deformation effect(EFSDTM_TN). The EFSDTM_TN has the same computational advantage as the FSDT_TN(FSDT with transverse normal deformation effect) does, which allows us to improve the through-the-thickness distributions of displacements and stresses via the recovery procedure. The thermal stresses obtained by the present theory are compared with those of the FSDT_TN and three-dimensional elasticity.

Use of Biosurfactant for the Removal of Organic Pollutants in Soil/Groundwater (바이오 계면활성제에 의한 토양/지하수내 유기성 오염물질 제거)

  • Partitioning of hydrophobic organic compounds (HOCs) to a biosurfactant, hydroxypropyl-${\beta}$-cyclodextrin (HPCD), was conducted to evaluate the feasibility of using HPCD to remove HOCs from soil/groundwater. HOC partitioning to HPCD was very fast, with over 95% of the complexation occurring within 10 min. Some influence of solution chemistry and HOC concentration on HOC-HPCD complex formation coefficients was observed. HPCD sorption on soil as quantified by both a fluorescence technique and total organic carbon measurements was negligible, indicating no significant affinity of HPCD for the solid phase. Although the HOC solubilization capability of HPCD was lower than that of synthetic surfactants such as SDS and Tween 80, HPCD can be effective in removing sorbed HOCs from a model subsurface environment, primarily because of its negligible sorption to the solid phase (i.e., all the HPCD added facilitates HOC elution). However, in contrast with conventional surfactants, HPCD becomes relatively less effective for HOC partitioning with increasing HOC size and hydrophobicity. Therefore, comparisons between HPCD and synthetic surfactants for enhanced remediation applications must consider the specific HOC(s) present and the potential for surfactant material losses to the solid phase, as well as other more generally recognized considerations such as material costs and potential toxicological effects.

  • This study suggest that firms can use online brand communities as an IMC tool to achieve high brand loyalty through marketer-controlled or loyal customer-controlled brand contacts. In this perspective, the online brand community as a marketing communication tool can help the firm in eliciting favorable responses from customers. This study finds that an online brand community, as a critical marketing promotion tool, helps a firm elicit favorable relationship with customers and build strong brand loyalty. In particular, this study suggests several important theoretical and managerial implications.   • The Shap granite encloses well developed quartz veins and veinlets containing molybdenite in association with other ore sulphide minerals. The preliminary study of the geochemical aspects of the granite stock and mineralisation of molybdenite in comparison with the porphyry deposits is carried out; the distribution of major, minor and ore metal elements in wall rocks, altered envelope and veins, and the molybdenum mineralisation, mainly in connexion with hydrothermal alteration are discussed. The molybdenite and other ore mineralisation, especially bismuthinite and chalcopyrite, are spatially closely related to the hydrothermal alteration adjacent to the veinings, and are dominant where the strong orthoclase alteration has taken place. A pattern of alteration and mineralisation can be recognised and forms the basic for the subdivision of the quarry into several distinct zones, which correspond with the sequence of alteration and mineralisation. The veins, veinlets and their alteration haloes can be further subdivided into a series of concentric zones.

Distribution of Carabid Beetles(Coleoptera: Carabidae) in different forests of Central Kangwon-do (강원 중부지역 산림내의 딱정벌레과(科) 분포에 관한 연구)

  • This study deals with the structure of Carabid beetle community surveyed in different stands. Species richness and abundance of Carabid beetles were 1,162 individuals, 23 species, 10 genera in the Pinus densiflora stand, 418 individuals, 23 species, 11 genera in the Pinus koraiensis stand, 782 individuals, 25 species, 11 genera in the Larix leptolepis stand, 1,383 individuals 25 species, 12 genera in the Quercus variabilis stand. Dominant species were Synuchus cycloderus(19.8%), Synuchus nitidus(16.6%), Pterostichus pertirax(16.2%) in the Pinus densiflora stand. Pterostichus sp.1(27.9%), Synuchus nitidus(24.4%), Synuchus cycloderus(10.2%) in the Pinus koraiensis stand, Synuchus sp.1(40.0%), Synuchus nitidus(9.3), Pterostichus sp.1(7.4%) in the Larix leptoepis stand. Pterostichus sp.2(17.4%), Synuchus cycloderus(14.4%). Pterostichus pertirax(14.1%) in the Quercus variabili stand. Shannon species diversity index(H') in the Pinus densiflora, Pinus koraiensis, Larix leptolepis and Quercus variabilis stand were 2.11, 2.25, 2.23 and 2.32 respectively and Evenness index(J') were 0.64, 0.72, 0.69 and 0.72, respectively. Community similarity index showed the lowest value (0.66) between Quercus variabilis stand and Pinus koraiensis stand and the highest value (0.83) between Pinus densiflora stand and Larix leptolepis stand.

Screening of Rhizobium, Hairy Vetch Root Nodule Bacteria, with Promotion of Nodulation and Nitrogen Fixation (뿌리혹 형성능과 질소 고정능이 우수한 헤어리베치 유래 Rhizobium의 분리 및 선발)

  • This study was conducted to select rhizobia from hairy vetch (Vicia villosa Roth) with nodulation and excellent nitrogen-fixing ability. Hairy vetch root was collected from 7 of cultivation region of all over the country, rhizobia were isolated from the root nodules. Isolates were re-inoculated into a hairy vetch separately and studied nodulation and nitrogen-fixing ability. As a result, total of 52 Rhizobium isolates were isolated from the hairy vetch root nodules, among these, 16 isolates were Rhizobium which show good growth at more than 0.5% NaCl concentration. These 16 isolates were re-inoculated separately, 8 weeks after, good root nodule formation was observed from Rhizobium sp. RH1, RH3, RH81, RH82, RH84, and RH93 strain treated samples. Six isolates were positive for nitrogen fixing ability, the highest acetylene reduction activity was shown by Rhizobium sp. RH84. Results suggest that the Rhizobium sp. RH84 could be used as the possibility of its application as a green manure crop of hairy vetches in nonuniform salt distribution reclaimed land.

Late Quaternary Sedimentation in the Yellow Sea off Baegryeong Island, Korea (한국 황해 백령도 주변해역 후 제4기 퇴적작용)

  • High-resolution chirp profiles were analyzed to investigate the echo types of near-surface sediments in the Yellow Sea off the Baegryeong Island. On the basis of seafloor morphology and subbottom echo characters, 7 echo types were identified. Flat seafloor with no internal reflectors or moderately to well-developed subbottom reflectors (echo type 1-1 and 1-2) is mainly distributed in the southern part of the study area. Flat seafloor with superposed wavy bedforms (echo type 1-3) is also distributed in the middle part. Mounded seafloor with either smooth surface or superposed bedforms (echo type 2-1, 2-2, and 2-3) occurs in the middle part of the study area. Irregular and eroded seafloor with no subbottom reflectors (echo type 3-1) is present in the northern part of the study area off the Baegryeong Island. According to the distribution pattern and sedimentary facies of echo types, depositional environments can be divided into three distinctive areas: (1) active erosional zone due to strong tidal currents in the northern part; (2) formation of tidal sand ridges in response to tidal currents associated with sea-level rise distributed in the middle part; and (3) transgressive sand sheets in the southern part. Such a depositional pattern, including 7 echo types, in this area reflects depositional process related to the sea-level rise and strong tidal currents during the Holocene transgression.

Distribution of Higher Fungi in Wolchulsan National Park (월출산 국립공원의 고등균류 분포)

  • The result of the survey on higher fungi in the Wolchulsan National Park from April 2009 to October 2011 is as follows. During the survey, total of 1 kingdoms 2 divisions 5 classes 18 orders 56 families 133 genera and 298 species were surveyed, Basidiomycota has 12 orders 47 families 120 genera 278 species, Ascomycota 6 orders 9 families 13 genera 20 species. As for Basidiomycota, Agaricomycetes has 46 families 118 genera 276 species. The most occurred fungi were Russulaceae with 37 species, followed by Boletaceae, Amanitaceae, Agaricaceae and Polyporaceae. Various species of most higher fungi occurred during the period with average temperature of 26.0~27.9, max. 32.0~34.9, min. 24.0~25.9, and over 100 mm of precipitation.

Spatial Variability of in situ and GOCI and MODIS Chlorophyll and CDOM in Summer at the East Sea (여름철 동해의 현장측정치와 GOCI와 MODIS 위성 자료로 측정한 엽록소와 유색용존유기물의 공간 변동성)

  • Because of impact on the underwater light field, CDOM can influence the accuracy of global satellite-based measurement of ocean chlorophyll and primary productivity. So we investigated the distribution and seasonal variation of CDOM in the East Sea during summer 2009 and 2011. Among them we report two distinctively different summer cases between 2009 and 2011 year, in which showed the different main sources for CDOM. Regulating factors and sources of CDOM in the East Sea were examined. Comparison between in situ and satellite derived Chl a and CDOM were made to find an influence of CDOM on measurement of satellite derived Chl a. Similar pattern and matching of MODIS Chl a with in situ Chl a 2009 was comparable, but significant discrepancy between MODIS Chl a and in situ Chl a was found, when CDOM was high in summer of 2011. GOCI data showed better matching with in situ data for both Chl a and CDOM, compared to MODIS data in summer of 2011. The presence of high CDOM at the surface layer supplied by vertical mixing seems to affect on the overestimation of Chl a by satellite data.
