  • A 2014 nationwide survey in radish fields investigated the distribution of common viruses and possible emerging viruses. Radish leaves with virus-like symptoms were collected and 108 samples assayed by RT-PCR using specific primers for Radish mosaic virus (RaMV), Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV), and Turnip mosaic virus (TuMV); 47 samples were TuMV positive, and RaMV and CMV were detected in 3 and 2 samples, respectively. No samples showed double infection of TuMV/RaMV, or RaMV/CMV, but two double infections of TuMV/CMV were detected. TuMV isolates were sorted by symptom severity, and three isolates (R007-mild; R041 and R065-severe) selected for BLAST and phylogenetic analysis, which indicated that the coat protein (CP) of these isolates (R007, R041, and R065) have approx. 98-99% homology to a previously reported TuMV isolate. RaMV CP showed approx. 99% homology to a previously reported isolate, and the CMV CP is identical to a previously reported Korean isolate (GenBank : GU327368). Three isolates of TuMV showing different pathogenicity (degree of symptom severity) will be valuable to study determinants of pathogenicity.

  • In this study, we investigated and analysed the water quality, distribution of the vegetation and the wildlife to seven wetlands in Donghae city. As a result, most of the wetlands was found to be very poor water quality and some specific pollutants from entering the wetland. A total of 234 taxa on vegetation were identified including 207 species, 24 varieties, 3 formaes, 168 genera and 69 families. 2 species were recorded as designated rare plant of Korea Forest Service. The naturalized plants were 27 species. The urbanization rate of naturalization index was 8.4% and 11.6% respectively. The number of benthic macroinvertebrate taxa was 35 species, 26 families, 12 orders, 5 classes and 3 phylums. Rare species were recorded 3 species. Taxa for fishes were 5 family and 5 species. Endangered wildlife was found 1 species. Most wetlands in Donghae city were the relatively small in size, and some wetlands were separately located from forest and river ecosystems. It was limited inflow and outflow of species into a wetland from the outside. However, various vegetation were found at whole wetlands and some special species also inhabited. The wetlands performed the role as a habitat of wild life.

  • Recent global warming seems to be dramatic and has influenced forest ecosystems. Changes in phonology of biota, species distribution range shift and catastrophic climatic disasters due to recent global warming have been observed during the last century. Korean forests located mainly in the temperate zone also have been experienced climatic change impacts including shifting of leafing and flowering phonology, changes in natural disasters and forest productivity, However, little research has been conducted on the impact of climate change on forest ecosystems in Korea which is essential to assess the impact and extent of adaptation. Also there is a shortage in basic long-term data of forest ecosystem processes. Careful data collection and ecological process modeling should be focused on characteristic Korean forest ecosystems which are largely complex terrain that might have hindered research activities. An integrative ecosystem study which covers forest dynamics, biological diversity, water and carbon flux and cycles in a forest ecosystem and spatial and temporal dynamics modeling is introduced. Global warming effects on Korean forest ecosystems are reviewed. Forestry activity and the importance of forest ecosystems as a dynamic carbon reservoir are discussed. Forest management options and challenges for future research, impact assessment, and preparation of mitigating measures in Korea are proposed.

  • Numerical model with LPT (Lagrangian Particle Tracking) module was used to understand the variation of residence time in the outer sea of the Sihwa lake result operating from the Sihwa tidal power plant. Numerical model was composed in order to investigate the spatial distribution characteristics, the average residence time in each area was calculated by dividing the outer sea area of Sihwa lake into 4 areas. The average residence time of the areas appeared to be increase as it entered the areas located in the inner bay (13 days) from the area located in most outer sea (3 days) both before and during operation. Variation of average residence time by areas were increased in the area that was located in the most outer sea of during operation compared to before operation, and decreased in the other area. Artificial discharges from tidal power plant induces particle traps in the formation of vortex in the area located in the most outer seas, entrainment in the remaining areas, which affects variation in residence time. In other words, the jet flow generated during drainage and the change in the residence time due to the vortex and entrainment action indicate the increase horizontal mixing of water in the outer sea and in the inner bay.

  • Agricultural activities in Chejudo require more specialized weather services in this region. The meteorological information available from the Korea Meteorological Service (KMS) is limited in its areal coverage because the KMS stations are located along the narrow band of coastal area. topoclimatological technique which makes use of empirical relationships between the topography and the weather can be applied to produce reasonable estimates of the climatic variables such as air temperature and precipitation over remote land area where routine observations are rare. Presentation of these estimates in a from of fine-mesh grid map can also be helpful to upgrade the quality of weather services in this region. Altitude values of the 250 m grid points were read from a 1: 25000 topographic map and the mean altitude, the mean slope, and the aspect of the slope were determined for each 1 km$^2$ land area from these altitude data. Daily minimum air temperature data were collected from 18 points in Chejudo during the winter period from November 1987 to February 1988. The data were grouped into 3 sets based on synoptic pressure pattern. Departures from the KMS observations were regressed to the topographical variables to delineate empirical relationships between the local minimum temperature under specific pressure patterns and the site topography. The selected regression equations were used to calculate the daily minimum temperature for each 1 km$^2$ land area under the specific pressure patterns. The outputs were presented in a fine-mesh grid map with a 6-level contour capability.

  • In this study, vibrational tendon tension measurement methods are applied to estimate tension of external tendons used in segmental post-tensioned bridges. The acceleration of various length type of tendons is measured and natural frequencies are obtained using FFT (Fast Fourier Transform). The obtained natural frequencies are within 1% error regardless of sensor direction and location. On the basis of natural frequency of tendon, estimation of the tendon tension is performed by using many types of solutions such as string theory equation, multi mode estimation, practical formula estimation and stiff string with clamped-clamped boundary conditions. The results are compared with each other and have shown that the flexural stiffness is not negligible in tendons of this type causing the vibration mode to be inharmonically related. The results have shown that the method using stiff string equation with clamped-clamped boundary conditions is more accurate than the other methods. Application example of in-service bridges has shown that force distribution effects from friction at deviation blocks can be effectively detected.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the current states of interior design as a major at vocational high schools and to suggest ways in which it can be improved. Three hundred and four students and twelve teachers of two vocational high schools comprised the sample population for this study. Data was collected using two methods, questionnaires and interviews. Frequency distribution, mean, and chi-square tests were used to analyze the data. The findings of this study are as follows: The student respondents were more interested in studying residential design, furniture design and making, drafting and perspective drawing than other areas of study. Most teachers had difficulties teaching the subject of residential design because they were not well educated with this area. Surprisingly most students hoped to extend their education to a university or college after graduation, not to enter the workforce. According to teachers'responses, almost ninety percentage of students entered university or college. And more than two thirds of the students desired to study an interior design related major at the university level. Among graduates having jobs, half of them were working in interior design fields. If the students had to choose their jobs, they would work in interior design fields. The variables differentiating several related careers after graduation were school, grade, and sex. The students viewed interior design, interior coordination, and CAD related work as fields likely to enter upon graduating from vocational high schools; however, teachers viewed furniture making, interior accessorizing, and home fashion as fields more appropriate to the students'level of training. The teacher respondents criticized the textbooks in four categories; suitability with the students'level was average or below average; students'interest level and students'understanding level were average or above average; and whether the book was easy or difficult to be utilized for the purposes of teaching was also average or above average. The criticism was a little diverse depending on each book or each chapter. The teachers pointed out several problems using those books, such as insufficient examples or explanation, lack of coherence between some chapters, and an incompatibility with the allotted time frame in class. The merits of the textbooks varied such as a well organized structure, ability to generate students'interest. This study revealed that the strategy for improving the interior design major at vocational high schools should invoke, 1) dividing students into two groups-one to enter a university; the other to have jobs after graduation to focus their interests. 2) improving textbooks more appropriate to the students. 3) providing present teachers the opportunities for in-service training and hiring new teachers with credentials more suitable to educate students who desire to be interior designers.

  • About the patients who visited the emergency department of a hospital, investigative study was performed to assess and to classify them with triage tool, and to estimate the characteristics of them. 210 patients older than 15 years were investigated. Among them 11 patients who had responded inappropriately were excluded and remaining 210 patients were chosen as study subjects. Investigation had been performed for 30 days from Jan. 10, 2001 to Feb. 9, 2001. The triage tool was designed through the modification of triage tools developed by Kim and Choi. The data were analyzed with the SPSS program using mean, standard deviation, frequency, percentage, ANOVA and Scheffe's test. The results were as follows: 1. Of the characteristics of the study subjects, mean age of patients were 55.76 years and 70-79 years group which included 41 patients(20.6%) were most numerous. 101 (51.8%) patients visited emergency room by 119 emergency service and 91(45.7%) patients walked with assistance. 127 patients were cared in internal medicine department. 2. The distribution of triage scores were from minimum 6 points to maximum 18 points with mean $13.76{\pm}2.58$ points. 3. Triage scores had significant relationship with age(F=13.349,P=0.000), visiting method (F=8.832, P=0.000), walking status(F=28.185, p=0.000), care department(F=2.596, P=0.019), and preexisting disease(F=12.012, P=0.000). 4. After trage there were no urgent patient, 35 emergent patients(17.6%),109 subemergent patients(54.8%), and 55 nonemergent patients (27.6%). The result of emergency care were 80 admission(40.2%), 59 discharge (29.6%), 34 ICU admission(17.1%), 14 transfer to other hospital(7%), 10 operation (5%), and 2 death (2%). 5. About the time required for triage, mean duration to triage were $7.54{\pm}2.28$ mins in emergent patients, mean $7.23{\pm}2.50$ mins in subemergent patients and mean $6.49{\pm}2.19$ mins in nonemergent patients. There were no differences in duration to triage according to the severity of triage. 6. Time required in emergency treatment were mean $116.23{\pm}88.10$ in emergent patients mean $101.61{\pm}73.27$ in subemergent patients and mean $81.56{\pm}61.01$ in nonemergent patients. There were no significant difference among groups. This study depicted that triage scores were below the middle level and there were many geriatric patients in this hospital. Among the characteristics of patients, age, visiting method, walking status, care department, and accompanying disease could be data for triage of emergency patients. With triage score of a patient, the outcome of emergency care of a patient could be anticipated and this could be basal data in determining the priority of emergency nursing.
