  • A diode laser sensor system based on absorption spectroscopy techniques has been developed to measure $CO_2$ concentration and temperature non-intrusively in high temperature combustion environments using a 2.0 ${\mu}m$ DFB(Distributed Feedback) laser. Two optics was fabricated in pig-tail fashion and all optical components were implemented in a single box. The evolution of measurement sensitivity was done using test cell by changing sweep frequency and $CO_2$ concentration. Gas temperature was determined from the ratio of integrated line strengths. Species concentration was determined from the integrated line intensity and the measured temperature. The result show that the system has 2% error in wide operation frequency range and accuracy of $CO_2$ concentration was about 3%. The system was applied to measure temperature and concentration in the combustion region of a premixed $CH_4$ +air triangular flame. The measurement results of gas temperature agreed well with thermocouple results. Many considerations were taken into account to reduce optical noise, etalon effect, beam steering and base line matching problem. The evaluations results and actual combustion measurement demonstrate the practical and applicability for in-situ and real time combustion monitoring in a practical system.

  • The paper reports the development of a distributed temperature sensing (DTS) system, which is a fire detection system using optical sensor linear detectors that depends on foreign and domestic technologies. This study accordingly analyzed the electrical signal patterns of Raman scattering light mainly used for temperature sensing among back-scattered light generated in optical fiber by using an oscilloscope. Through the measurement results, it could be verified that the Stokes signal patterns had little change by the temperature increase, but the temperature-sensitive anti-Stokes patterns had relative increase of the changes. This study developed a K-DTS system, which is an optical sensor linear fire detection system composed of an optical repeater and a receiver that can detect fires using Raman scattering light. It could be verified that the developed K-DTS system satisfied the type approval standards through the sensitivity tests using the rate of rise type and fixed temperature type sensitivity testers. In addition, performance experiments have been performed for performance evaluation of the K-DTS system developed in comparison with S-DTS system which has been imported from abroad and widely used in Korea. It can be confirmed from the results of the performance experiments using model tunnels that comparable performances can be obtained in fire detection locations and the measurements of fire temperatures.

  • A distributed healthcare monitoring system prototype for clinical and trauma patients, was developed, using wireless sensor network node. The proposed system aimed to measure various vital physiological health parameters like ECG and body temperature of patients and elderly persons and transfer his/ her health status wirelessly in Ad-hoc network, to remote base station which was connected to doctor's PDA/PC or to a hospital's main Server using wireless sensor node. The system also aims to save the cost of healthcare facility for patients and the operating power of the system because sensor network is deployed widely and the distance from sensor to base station was shorter than in general centralized system. The wireless data communication will follow IEEE 802.15.4 frequency communication with ad-hoc routing thus enabling every motes attached to patients, to form a wireless data network to send data to base-station, providing mobility and convenience to the users in home environment.

  • The Sea Surface Temperature (SST) is one of the most important oceanic environmental factors in determining the change of marine environments and ecological activities. Satellite thermal infrared images can be effective for understanding the global trend of sea surface temperature due to large scale. However, their low spatial resolution caused some limitations in some areas where complicated and refined coastal shapes due to many islands are present as in the Korean Peninsula. The coastal ocean is also very important because human activities interact with the environmental change of coastal area and most aqua farming is distributed in the coastal ocean. Thus, low-cost airborne thermal infrared remote sensing with high resolution capability is considered for verifying its possibility to extract SST and to monitor the changes of coastal environment. In this study, an airborne thermal infrared system was implemented using a low-cost and ground-based thermal infrared camera (FLIR), and more than 8 airborne acquisitions were carried out in the western coast of the Korean Peninsula during the periods between May 23, 2012 and December 7, 2013. The acquired thermal infrared images were radiometrically calibrated using an atmospheric radiative transfer model with a support from a temperature-humidity sensor, and geometrically calibrated using GPS and IMU sensors. In particular, the airborne sea surface temperature acquired in June 25, 2013 was compared and verified with satellite SST as well as ship-borne thermal infrared and in-situ SST data. As a result, the airborne thermal infrared sensor extracted SST with an accuracy of $1^{\circ}C$.

  • Wireless Sensor Network(WSN) is considered as a core technology necessary for Ubiquitous computing, with its numerous possible applications in many practical areas, is being researched and studied actively by many around the world. WSN utilizes wireless sensors spatially placed to gather information regarding temperature, light condition, motion and change in speed of the objects within their surrounding environment. This paper implements an environmental information monitoring and indexing system based on spatial indexing technique by constructing a WSN system. This Multi-Query Indexing Technique coupled with wireless sensors provides an output based on the pre-defined built-in data index and new input from the sensors. If environment data is occured, system have to perform a proper action after collecting and analyzing this data. This is the purpose of implementing environment data monitoring system. We constructed environmental application using TinyOS and built tested with MICAz sensor bords. We designed and implemented a monitoring system which detects and multi-indexing process environmental data from distributed sensors.

  • We have analyzed sea surface temperature and salinity data collected in the western Pacific Ocean by using an automated Thermosalinograph (TSG) installed on the RV Onnuri during May - June of 2001. The TSG data exhibit characteristics of water masses distributed in the near surface layer of the cruise area very well. Especially, they reveal the diurnal surface temperature cycle and the effect of rainfall on temperature and salinity in the equatorial region, showing the effectiveness of the use of TSG. Problems to be improved for the better TSG operation are the method of water sampling and calibration of TSG sensors. Installation of a pressure gauge in the TSG system and periodical sensor calibration are strongly recommended to ensure reliability of data.

  • In this study, a temperature distribution sensing method using optical fiber was applied to a large-scale levee experiment, and the applicability of wide-area levee or embankment monitoring technology to observe the changes inside the levee was reviewed. The optical fiber was buried in a large-scale levee, and the temporal and spatial temperature changes were measured according to the water level changes in the reservoir. As the water level of the reservoir increased, the temperature of the embankment slope decreased, and as the infiltration progressed, a change in the spatial location of the temperature change was detected. The temperature change due to embankment infiltration varied depending on the time of the infiltration progress, and the change assumed to be the seepage line could be observed. This study has demonstrated that information about temperature changes inside the levee can be interpreted as the information on the locations that are judged to be relatively vulnerable, investigating the changes in the condition inside the levee.

  • Recently, United States Geological Survey (USGS) distributed Landsat 8 Collection 2 Level 2 Science Product (L2SP). This paper aims to derive land surface temperature from L2SP and to validate it. Validation is made by comparing the land surface temperature with the one calculated from Landsat 8 Collection 1 Level 1 Terrain Precision (L1TP) and the one from Automated Synoptic Observing System (ASOS). L2SP is calculated from Landsat 8 Collection 2 Level 1 data and it provides land surface temperature to users without processing surface reflectance data. Landsat 8 data from 2018 to 2020 is collected and ground sensor data from eight sites of ASOS are used to evaluate L2SP land surface temperature data. To compare ground sensor data with remotely sensed data, 3×3 grid area data near ASOS station is used. As a result of analysis with ASOS data, L2SP and L1TP land surface temperature shows Pearson correlation coefficient of 0.971 and 0.964, respectively. RMSE (Root Mean Square Error) of two results with ASOS data is 4.029℃, 5.247℃ respectively. This result suggests that L2SP data is more adequate to acquire land surface temperature than L1TP. If seasonal difference and geometric features such as slope are considered, the result would improve.

  • This paper proposes a marine engine state monitoring system using a DPQ (Distributed Precedence Queue) mechanism which collects the state of bearings, temperature and pressure of engine through the CAN network. The CAN is developed by Bosch Corp. in the early 1980' for automobile network. The data from various sensors attached in the marine engine are converted to digital by the analog to digital converter and formatted to fit the CAN protocol at the CAN module. All the CAN modules are connected to the SPU (Signal Processing Unit) module for the efficient communication and processing. This design reduces the cost for wiring and improves the data transmission reliability by recognizing the sensor errors and data transmission errors. The DPQ mechanism is newly developed for the performance improvement of the marine engine system, which is demonstrated through the experiments.
