  • It is certain that the future manufacturing environment will be network-centric and spatially distributed based on Internet. Today, wide variety of distributed computing and communication technologies are available for implementing a system for product data exchange and sharing. One of the technologies that have been received most attentions for product data exchange and sharing is Product Data Management (PDM). PDM tries to integrate and manage process of data and technical documents that are connected to physical product components. In accordance to previous researches about PDM, it can be regarded as an integration tool of many different areas, which ensures that the right information is available to the right person at the right time and in the right form throughout the enterprise. PDM with Web-enabled CAD system is proposed in this paper in order to acknowledge the usefulness of the system mentioned. The system will use Web service on Visual Studio C#.Net to invoke the web application system.

  • Data mining is an effective method of the discovery of useful information such as rules and previously unknown patterns existing in large databases. The discovery of association rules is an important data mining problem. We have developed a new parallel mining called Distributed Frequent Pattern Tree (abbreviated by DFPT) algorithm on a distributed shared nothing parallel system to detect association rules. DFPT algorithm is devised for parallel execution of the FP-growth algorithm. It needs only two full disk data scanning of the database by eliminating the need for generating the candidate items. We have achieved good workload balancing throughout the mining process by distributing the work equally to all processors. We implemented the algorithm on a PC cluster system, and observed that the algorithm outperformed the Improved Count Distribution scheme.

  • The Active Appearance Model (AAM) is a class of deformable models, which, in the segmentation process, integrates the priori knowledge on the shape and the texture and deformation of the structures studied. This model in its sequential form is computationally intensive and operates on large data sets. This paper presents another framework to implement the standard version of the AAM model. We suggest a distributed and parallel approach justified by the characteristics of the model and their potentialities. We introduce a schema for the representation of the overall model and we study of operations that can be parallelized. This approach is intended to exploit the benefits build in the area of advanced image processing.

  • In these days of world-wide business environment, the characteristics of quality management are variety, specialty, decentralization, totality, etc. Thus nowadays quality management is demanded to incorporate these new concepts. We propose a web-bused distributed expert system for this purpose. The system consists of four expert systems for design of experiment, acceptance inspection, statistical process control and reliability management corresponding to design quality, incoming-material quality, manufacturing quality and usability quality, respectively, throughout the total product life cycle. Each distributed expert system at the horizontal level in the hierarchy carries out its own quality jobs independently. At the lower level in the hierarchy there is an expert system for measurement analysis to provide reliable data, and at the upper level, an expert system for total quality management to coordinate, integrate and make final decisions. A prototype has been developed and its application is presented.

  • In this paper, we propose a distributed synchronization algorithm for wireless mesh networks based on orthogonal frequency division multiple access. For time and frequency synchronization, a node requests its neighbor nodes for a change of fast Fourier transform starting points, transmission times, and carrier frequencies needed for synchronization. The node also updates its own time and frequency elements through simple formulas based on request messages received from neighbor nodes using a guard interval and a cyclic prefix. This process with the cooperation of neighbor nodes leads to a gradual synchronization of all nodes in the network. Through a performance comparison with a conventional scheme, we obtain simulation results indicating that the proposed scheme outperforms the conventional scheme in random topologies and a grid topology.

  • In this paper design and implementation of ship's distributed remote control system using dual-microprocessor is presented for real time process. The proposed system is implemented with the single chip microprocessors in tightly coupled mode and results in speed up of $s_p$=1.74. Under the assumption that the nodes are interconnected in multidrop, the overall system performance such as average throughout-delay characteristics and effective throughput are analyzed using M/G/1 queneing model, and results show that the proposed node can be used in medium sized distributed monitoring and control system.

  • The purpose of this study was to interpret modeling-based elementary science lessons from a perspective of distributed cognition. Data sources included three consecutive elementary science lessons dealing with particle models of gases and students' worksheet generated from modeling activities during the lessons. The data were analyzed in ways that could reveal the affordances and constraints of students' mental models and an external model in the science textbook, as well as the evolution of the models. The results showed that the students' mental models and the external model provided both affordances for and constraints to scientific problem solving and that the models evolved in the process of overcoming the constraints. Implications for science lessons and science education research were suggested.

  • We consider a distributed estimation where many nodes remotely placed at known locations collect the measurements of the parameter of interest, quantize these measurements, and transmit the quantized data to a fusion node; this fusion node performs the parameter estimation. Noting that quantizers at nodes should operate in a non-regular framework where multiple codewords or quantization partitions can be mapped from a single measurement to improve the system performance, we propose a low-weight estimation algorithm that finds the most feasible combination of codewords. This combination is found by computing the weighted sum of the possible combinations whose weights are obtained by counting their occurrence in a learning process. Otherwise, tremendous complexity will be inevitable due to multiple codewords or partitions interpreted from non-regular quantized data. We conduct extensive experiments to demonstrate that the proposed algorithm provides a statistically significant performance gain with low complexity as compared to typical estimation techniques.

  • In this paper, we design a digital protection IED(Intelligent Electric Device) for a distributed power system in connection with power grid. The device can measure various elements for protection and communicate with another devices through network. The protection IED is composed of specific function modules: signal process module which converts analog signal from PT and CT handle algorithm to digital one; communication module for connection with another IEDs; input/output module for user-interfaces; main control module for control the whole modules. A general purpose DSP board with TMS320C2812 is used in the IED. Experiments with the power system simulator DOBLE have been made to verily the proposed hardware system.

  • OTS(Operator Training System) requires computation for the systematic training in real-time. So we have developed a distributed operator training system that is composed of workstation based server and PC based user modules. Sever and OM(OTS Manager) modules are located in the workstation server and user modules are located in PCs. User modules have DCS-like user interfaces and transfer data with OM over the coaxial ethernet. This paper delineates a total system architecture and definition of data transferring between OM and User module. Having applied this system to a batch process, we could analyze operator's tasks.
