Performance Optimization of Parallel Algorithms

  • The high intensity of research and modeling in fields of mathematics, physics, biology and chemistry requires new computing resources. For the big computational complexity of such tasks computing time is large and costly. The most efficient way to increase efficiency is to adopt parallel principles. Purpose of this paper is to present the issue of parallel computing with emphasis on the analysis of parallel systems, the impact of communication delays on their efficiency and on overall execution time. Paper focuses is on finite algorithms for solving systems of linear equations, namely the matrix manipulation (Gauss elimination method, GEM). Algorithms are designed for architectures with shared memory (open multiprocessing, openMP), distributed-memory (message passing interface, MPI) and for their combination (MPI + openMP). The properties of the algorithms were analytically determined and they were experimentally verified. The conclusions are drawn for theory and practice.

  • Recently Hopfield proposed a model for content-addressable memory, which has been shown to be capable of storing information in a distributed fashion and determining the nearest-neighbor. Its application is, however, inherently limited to the case that the number of l's in each stored vector is nearly the same as the number of O's in that vector. If not the case, the model has high probability of failure in finding the nearest-neighbor. In this work, a modification of the Hopfield's model, which works well irrespective of the number of l's (or O's) in each stored vector, is suggested.

The Design and Implementation of the Reliable Network RAM using Compression on Linux (리눅스에서 압축을 이용한 안정적인 네트웍 램의 설계 및 구현)

  • Traditional operating systems use a virtual memory to provide users with a bigger memory than a physical memory. The virtual memory augments the insufficient physical memory by the swap device. Since disks are usually used as the swap device, the cost of a page fault is relatively high compared to the access cost of the physical memory. Recently, numerous papers have investigated the Network RAM in order to exploit the idle memory in the network instead of disks. Since today's distributed systems are interconnected with high-performance networks, the network latency is far smaller than the disk access latency In this paper we design and implement the Network RAM using block device driver on Linux. This is the first implementation of the Network RAM on Linux. We propose the new reliability method to recover the page when the other workstation's memory is damaged. The system using the Network RAM as the swap device reduces the execution time by 40.3% than the system using the disk as the swap device. The performance results suggest that the new reliability method that use the processor more efficiently has the similar execution time with others, but uses smaller server memory and generates less message traffic than others.

Design and Implementation of 3D Studio Max Plug-In in Collaborative Systems (협력시스템에서 3D 스튜디오 맥스 플러그인 설계 및 개발)

  • Collaborative systems allow users, who may be far removed from each other geographically, to do collaborative work such as 3D animation, computer game, and industrial design in a single virtual space. This paper describes our experience to develop a collaborative system framework that aims at expanding the some functions of a stand-alone visual modeling tool, called 3D Studio Max, into those of the distributed collaborative working environments. The paper mainly deals with design and implementation of a 3D shared-object Plug-In with respect to the 3D Studio Max Plug-In Software Development Kit in the distributed collaborative system developed by the authors. There are two major functions of the proposed scheme; one is to write 3D object-information to the shared memory after extracting it from the 3D Studio Max, the other is to create 3D objects after retrieving them from the shared memory. Also, the proposed scheme provides a simple way of storing 3D objects that have variable size, by means of shared memory which located in between the collaborative system clients and 3D studio Max. One of the remarkable virtures of the Plug-In is to reduce a considerable amount of shared object data which in consequence can mitigate the network overhead. This can be achieved by the fact that the system is able to extract a minimum amount of 3D objects that are required to transmit. Also, using the proposed scheme, user can facilitate 3D Studio Max into distributed collaborative working environments. This, in consequence give many benefits such as saving time as well as eliminating space constraints in the course of 3D modeling when we are under industrial design process.

Web-Based Distributed Visualization System for Large Scale Geographic Data (대용량 지형 데이터를 위한 웹 기반 분산 가시화 시스템)

  • In this paper, we propose a client server based distributed/parallel system to effectively visualize huge geographic data. The system consists of a web-based client GUI program and a distributed/parallel server program which runs on multiple PC clusters. To make the client program run on mobile devices as well as PCs, the graphical user interface has been designed by using JOGL, the java-based OpenGL graphics library, and sending the information about current available memory space and maximum display resolution the server can minimize the amount of tasks. PC clusters used to play the role of the server access requested geographic data from distributed disks, and properly re-sample them, then send the results back to the client. To minimize the latency happened in repeatedly access the distributed stored geography data, cache data structures have been maintained in both every nodes of the server and the client.

  • RT-eCos 3.0 is a micro-sized embedded real-time kernel that has been developed based on the open source eCos 3.0 to support the basic task model of the well-known distributed real-time object model, TMO(Time-Triggered Message-triggered Object). In this paper, the design and implementation techniques of the RMMC(Real-time Multicast & Memory replication Channel) that is a standard distributed IPC model of the TMO is described based on the RT-eCos 3.0. And the support technique of the global time for using the same time in a distributed environment using the RMMC is also described. The developed global time based RMMC supports highly abstracted distributed IPC environment in a wide area distributed computing environment with the RT-eCos 3.0.

MAXIMUM TOLERABLE ERROR BOUND IN DISTRIBUTED SIMULATED ANNEALING

  • Simulated annealing is an attractive, but expensive, heuristic method for approximating the solution to combinatorial optimization problems. Attempts to parallel simulated annealing, particularly on distributed memory multicomputers, are hampered by the algorithm's requirement of a globally consistent system state. In a multicomputer, maintaining the global state S involves explicit message traffic and is a critical performance bottleneck. To mitigate this bottleneck, it becomes necessary to amortize the overhead of these state updates over as many parallel state changes as possible. By using this technique, errors in the actual cost C(S) of a particular state S will be introduced into the annealing process. This paper places analytically derived bounds on this error in order to assure convergence to the correct optimal result. The resulting parallel simulated annealing algorithm dynamically changes the frequency of global updates as a function of the annealing control parameter, i.e. temperature. Implementation results on an Intel iPSC/2 are reported.

  • High performance digital computer technology enables the digital computer-based controllers to replace traditional analog controllers used for factory automations. This replacement, however, brings up the side effects caused by discrete quantization and non-real-time execution of control softwares. This paper describes the structure of real-time simulator and controller that can be used for design and verification of real-time digital controllers. The virtual machine concept adopted by real-time simulator make the proposed simulator be independent from the specific hardware platforms. The proposed system can also be used in the loosely coupled distributed environments connected through local area network using real-time message passing algorithm and virtual data table based on the shared memory mechanism.

  • In this paper the structure of 2-DOF controller based on artificial immune network algorithms has been suggested for nonlinear system. Up to present time, a number of structures of the 2-DOF controllers are considered as 2-DOF (2-Degrees Of Freedom) control functions. However, a general view is provided that they are the special cases of either the state feedback or the modification of PID controllers. On the other hand, the immune network system possesses a self organizing and distributed memory, also it has an adaptive function by feed back law to its external environment and allows a PDP (parallel distributed processing) network to complete patterns against the environmental situation, since antibody recognizes specific antigens which are the foreign substances that invade living creatures. Therefore, it can provide optimal solution to external environment. Simulation results by immune based 2-DOF controller reveal that immune algorithm is an effective approach to search for 2-DOF controller.
