Penetration of distributed generator(DG) to power distribution system can cause malfunction of existing protection schemes. Because grid interconnected DG can contribute fault currents and make bidirectional current flows on the system, fault contributions from DG can cause an interference of protection relay operation. Therefore, over current protection device of the distribution system with DGs need directional protection schemes. In this paper, improved directional protection algorithms are proposed for the distribution system with DG considering their fault characteristics. And than, these directional protection algorithms are tested and validated in various fault conditions. From the simulation results, it can be seen that the proposed directional protection algorithms are practically efficient for the radial distribution system with DG.
Recently, there has been growing interest in utilizing distributed generation (DG). However, an insertion of DG to existing distribution system can cause several problems such as voltage variations, harmonics, protective coordination, increasing fault current etc,. The typical protection system of the existing distribution system is designed for radial network. But penetration of DG to distribution system changes existing unidirectional power flow to bidirectional power flow. Therefore, investigation to cover whole field of distribution system must be accomplished such as changing of protection devices rating by increasing fault current, reevaluation of protective coordination. This paper presents that PSCAD/EMTDC simulations was accomplished to analyze effect of DG on the distribution protective coordination. In addition, directional recloser-sectionalizer coordination are evaluates distribution system with DG by using PSCAD/EMTDC simulation.
DG (Distributed Generation) devices such as co-generation systems, fuel cells and photovoltaic power generation systems, etc is introducing into the distribution systems by the deregulation. In this paper, the controller of synchronous generator used for DG is newly designed in order to regulate the real & reactive power and the effect on the islanding phenomenon compared with the traditional controller.
This paper proposes determining a optimal number, size and allocation of DGs(Distributed Generations) needed to minimize operation cost of distribution system, obtains economic benefit in operation planning of DG and improves system reliability. System reliability is assessed whether DG install and reliability cost consider. DG optimal allocations are determined to minimize total cost with power buying cost, operation cost of DG, loss cost and outage cost using GA(Genetic Algorithm). And it was determined installed load-point and order.
The liberalization of electricity market and environmental concerns are the major driving forces for the development of Distributed Generation (DG). The mode of grid-connected wind power generation is becoming popular and has matured as a reliable DG technology. The voltage generated by the wind generator is stepped up to the higher voltage by the transformers before connecting to the grid. Operating algorithm of the differential relays for transformer protection used in the wind farms need to be modified to take care of the dynamic nature of fault current caused by the intermittent nature of the wind power. An algorithm for the differential relay is proposed in which dual slope characteristics are adjusted with varying fault level situation according to the wind generator in service as well as with the wind speed. A case study conducted for a typical wind farm shows that the proposed method avoids mal-operation of the differential relay in varying wind power conditions.
The high penetration level of inverter-based distributed generation (DG) power plants is challenging the low-voltage ride-through requirements, especially under unbalanced voltage sags. Recently, a flexible injection of both positive- (PS) and negative-sequence (NS) reactive currents has been suggested for the next generation of grid codes. This can enhance the ancillary services for voltage support at the point of common coupling (PCC). In light of this, considering distant grid faults that occur in a mainly inductive grid, this paper proposes a complete voltage support control scheme for the interface inverters of medium or high-rated DG power plants. The first contribution is the development of a reactive current reference generator combining PS and NS, with a feature to increase the PS voltage and simultaneously decrease the NS voltage, to mitigate voltage imbalance. The second contribution is the design of a voltage support control loop with two flexible PCC voltage set points, which can ensure continuous operation within the limits required in grid codes. In addition, a current saturation strategy is also considered for deep voltage sags to avoid overcurrent protection. Finally, simulation and experimental results are presented to validate the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme.
The present trend of increasing the penetration levels of Distributed Generator (DG) in the distribution network has made the issue of Islanding crucial for the reliable operation of the network. The islanding, if not detected early may lead to the collapse of the system as it can drive the distribution system to the cascaded failure. In this paper, an extensive study of the effect of DG placement and sizing is performed by dividing the system into different zones to obtain a reduced effect of islanding. The siting and sizing of DG is carried out to improve the overall voltage profile or/and reduction in active power loss using two stage Genetic Algorithm (GA). In the first stage a basic knockout selection is considered and the best population is taken for next stage, where roulette selection for crossover and mutation is performed for optimal placement and sizing of DGs. The effect of the islanding, due to load variations is reduced by optimal siting and sizing of DG. The effectiveness of the proposed scheme is tested on the IEEE 33 and 69 radial bus systems and the results obtained are promising.
To improve the power quality of distributed generation (DG) systems even in the presence of distorted grid condition, dual current control scheme of a grid-connected inverter is proposed. The proposed current control scheme is achieved by decomposing the inverter state equations into the fundamental and harmonic components. The derived models are employed to design dual current controllers. The conventional PI decoupling current controller is used in the fundamental model to control the main power flow in DG systems. At the same time, the predictive control is applied in the harmonic model to suppress undesired harmonic currents to zero quickly. To decompose the voltage inputs and state variables into the fundamental and harmonic components, the fourth order band pass filter (BPF) is designed in the discrete-time domain for a digital implementation. For experimental verification, 2kVA prototype of a grid-connected inverter has been constructed using digital signal processor (DSP) TMS320F28335. The effectiveness of the proposed strategy is demonstrated through comparative simulation and experimental results.
As distributed generation (DG) is connected to grid, there is new node-type occurring in distribution network. An efficient algorithm is proposed in this paper to calculate power flow for weakly meshed distribution network with DGs in different load models. The algorithm respectively establishes mathematical models focusing on the wind power, photovoltaic cell, fuel cell, and gas turbine, wherein the different DGs are respectively equivalent to PQ, PI, PQ (V) and PV node-type. When dealing with PV node, the algorithm adopts reactive power compensation device to correct power, and the reactive power allocation principle is proposed to determine reactive power initial value to improve convergence of the algorithm. In addition, when dealing with the weakly meshed network, the proposed algorithm, which builds path matrix based on loop-analysis and establishes incident matrix of node voltage and injection current, possesses good convergence and strong ability to process the loops. The simulation results in IEEE33 and PG&G69 node distribution networks show that with increase of the number of loops, the algorithm's iteration times will decrease, and its convergence performance is stronger. Clearly, it can be effectively used to solve the problem of power flow calculation for weakly meshed distribution network containing different DGs.
Fuel cell (FC) distributed generation (DG) is gradually becoming more attractive to mainstream electricity users as capacity improves and costs decrease. New technologies including inverters are becoming available to provide a uniform standard interconnection of DGs with an electric power system. Some of the operating conflicts and the effect of DG on power quality are addressed and investigated through simulations on a real distribution network with an FC power plant. The results of these simulations have proved load tracking capability following the real and reactive power change of the load and have shown the flow of overcurrent from an FC power plant during the ground fault of a distribution line.
