  • The emitting structure of multi-channel-type flat fluorescent lamps (FFLs) combined by a lenticular-lens-patterned diffuser plate was optimized by the ray tracing technique. The optimal parameters such as the distance between the channels of the FFL and the distance between the FFL and the diffuser plate were suggested from the viewpoint of the luminance uniformity. The best luminance uniformity, which was higher than 90%, was obtained at the channel distance of 4 mm and the distance of 12.5 mm between the FFL and the patterned diffuser plate.

  • We show that large subsets of vector spaces over finite fields determine certain point configurations with prescribed distance structure. More specifically, we consider the complete graph with vertices as the points of $A{\subseteq}F^d_q$ and edges assigned the algebraic distance between pairs of vertices. We prove nontrivial results on locating specified subgraphs of maximum vertex degree at most t in dimensions $d{\geq}2t$.

  • Most distance functions, including taxicab distance, are defined on Cartesian plane, and recent studies on distance functions have been mainly focused on Cartesian plane. However, most streets in cities include not only straight lines but also curves. Therefore, there is a significant need for a distance function to be defined on a curvilinear coordinate system. In this paper, we define a new function named polar taxicab distance, using polar coordinates. We prove that this function satisfies the conditions of distance function. We also investigate the geometric properties and classifications of circles in the plane with polar taxicab distance.

  • Background: Maize fodder is being used as staple feed for livestock but it lacks protein and essential amino acids; lysine and tryptophan. Intercropping maize with leguminous soybean crop is promising technique under limited land resources of South Korea but it can only give considerable advantages when adequate distance is provided between corn and soybean rows. Main aim of present study was to find-out adequate distance between corn and soybean seeding rows for optimum growth, yield and nutritive value of intercropped forage. Methods: Different interrow distances between corn and soybean were evaluated under four treatments, viz. 1) Corn sole as positive control treatment 2) Zero cm between corn and soybean (control); 2) Five cm between corn and soybean; 3) 10 cm between corn and soybean, with three replicates under randomized block design. Results: Findings depicted that height and number of corn stalks and ears were similar (P > 0.05) among different treatments. Numerically average corn ear height was decreased at zero cm distance. Dry matter percentage in all components; corn stalk, corn ear and soybean was also found not different (P > 0.05) but dry matter yield in component of corn ear was lower (P < 0.05) at zero cm distance as compared to that of 5 and 10 cm interrow distances. In case of nutritive value, total digestible nutrient yield in intercropped corn was also found lower (P < 0.05) at zero cm distance than that of 5 and 10 cm interrow distances between corn and soybean seeding rows. Substantial decrease in dry matter yield of maize ear at zero cm distance might be attributed to factor of closed interrow spacing which made interplant competition more intensified for light interception, necessary for photosynthetic activity. Lower dry matter yield in ear also reduced total digestible nutrients in intercropped maize because it was determining factor in calculation of digestible nutrients. The optimum yield and nutritive value of forage at wider interrow distance i.e. 5 cm between corn and soybean might be due to adequate interseed distance. Conclusion: Conclusively, pattern of corn and soybean seeding in rows at 5 cm distance was found suitable which provided adequate interrow distance to maintain enough mutual cooperation and decreased competition between both species for optimum production performance and nutritive value of intercropped forage.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the proximity of the mandibular molar apex to the buccal bone surface in order to provide anatomic information for apical surgery. Materials and Methods: Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images of 127 mandibular first molars and 153 mandibular second molars were analyzed from 160 patients' records. The distance was measured from the buccal bone surface to the root apex and the apical 3.0 mm on the cross-sectional view of CBCT. Results: The second molar apex and apical 3 mm were located significantly deeper relative to the buccal bone surface compared with the first molar (p < 0.01). For the mandibular second molars, the distance from the buccal bone surface to the root apex was significantly shorter in patients over 70 years of age (p < 0.05). Furthermore, this distance was significantly shorter when the first molar was missing compared to nonmissing cases (p < 0.05). For the mandibular first molars, the distance to the distal root apex of one distal-rooted tooth was significantly greater than the distance to the disto-buccal root apex (p < 0.01). In mandibular second molar, the distance to the apex of C-shaped roots was significantly greater than the distance to the mesial root apex of non-C-shaped roots (p < 0.01). Conclusions: For apical surgery in mandibular molars, the distance from the buccal bone surface to the apex and apical 3 mm is significantly affected by the location, patient age, an adjacent missing anterior tooth, and root configuration.

  • Alzheimer's disease has the significant factors for the both specific and characteristic features according to the disease progressing that are the volumetry and surface area by the brain hippocampus shrinking and thinning. However, we have suggested a shape analysis to calculate the variance by the roughness, coarseness or uneven surface on 3D MR images. For the reasons we have presented two methods: the first method is the distance calculation from major axis to edge points and the second method is the distance calculation from centroidal point to edge points on a coronal plane. Then we selected the shortest distance and the longest distance in each slice and analyzed the ANOVA and average distances. Consequently we obtained the available and great results by the longest distance of the axial and centroidal point. The results of average distances were 44.85(AD), 45.04(MCI) and 49.31(NC) from the axial points and 39.30(AD), 39.58(MCI) and 44.78(NC) from centroidal points respectively. Finally the distance variations for the easily recognized visualization were shown by the color mapping. This research could be provided an indicator of biomarkers that make diagnosis and prognosis the Alzheimer's diseases in the future.

  • Nowadays, cameras embedded in smartphones can take high resolution photographs that can be used to analyze skin conditions without using specialized equipments. In shooting photographs with a smartphone, it is difficult to maintain a uniform shooting distance. Therefore, it is essential to adapt a skin analysis method to the shooting distance. In this paper, we focus on a pore detection algorithm that is adaptive to the camera distance. We develop a relationship model between the shooting distance and the appropriate size of the pore detection mask. In addition, we propose a method to estimate the normalized pore size (i. e. pore size at a standard shooting distance). We conducted experiments on skin images taken from different shooting distances. It was verified that the proposed method can achieve more accurate pore detection result, close to those from skin images taken at a standard shooting distance.

  • The anatomic structure around interproximal area plays an important role not only in the natural teeth, but also in the implant. The loss of papilla can lead to cosmetic deformity, phonetic problem, food impaction on the anterior dentition, and masticatory problem, food impaction and proximal caries on the posterior dentition. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between interdental papilla existence and distance from contact point to alveolar crest in Korean posteior dentition. 45 Korean adult patients(31males, 14 females) participated in this study. Measurements were carreid out total 126 interproximal areas, 18 first premolar, 31 second premolar, 40 first molar, and 37 second molar areas. Papilla index was recorded as suggested by Jemt. Distance between contact point and alveolar crest measrued by Florida $probe^{R}$, after flap elevation. Each distance was measured 10 times by every 0.1mm unit. The results showed that the mean Papilla index 1.37 and mean distance between contact point and alveolar crest was 7.44mm. The correlation between the Papilla index and distance was high negative correlation(Pearson correlation=-0.47), and it was statistically significant(P=0.000) When the distance between contact point and alveolar crest was 5mm, the loss of papilla was appeared almost in half cases. When the distance was 6mm, the papilla loss was present 95%, when 7mm, the papilla loss was 100%.
