  • This paper presents a system-on-a-chip (SOC) design for digital TV. The single LSI incorporates almost all essential parts such as CPU, ISO/IEC 11172/13818 system/audio/video decoders, a video post-processor, a graphics/OSD processor and a display processor. It has analog IP's inside such as video DACs, an audio PLL, and a system PLL to reduce the system-level implementation cost. Descramblers and Smart Card interface are included to support widely used conditional access systems. The video decoder can decode two video streams simultaneously. The DSP-based audio decoder can process various audio coding specifications. The functional blocks for video quality enhancement also form outstanding features of this SoC. The SoC supports world-wide major DTV services including ATSC, ARIB, DVB, and DIRECTV.

  • Achieving white balance is one of the key issues for LCD image quality enhancement. A well-known color correction algorithm is Accurate Color Capture (ACC). Determination of ACC correction values has been time consuming as past methods have required trial-and-error analysis of differences between predicted and measured values. We propose a new ACC value determination method that uses spatially emulated patterns and measured values on patterns.

  • Images with lower illumination from the light source or with dark regions due to shadows, etc., can improve subjective image quality by using retinex-based image enhancement schemes. The retinex theory is a method that recognizes the relative lightness of a scene, rather than recognizing the brightness of the scene. The way the human visual system recognizes a scene in a specific position can be in one of several methods: single-scale retinex, multi-scale retinex, and multi-scale retinex with color restoration (MSRCR). The proposed method is based on the MSRCR method, which includes a color restoration step, which consists of three phases. In the first phase, the existing MSRCR method is applied. In the second phase, the dynamic range of the MSRCR output is adjusted according to its histogram. In the last phase, the proposed method transforms the retinex output value into the display dynamic range using a logarithm transformation function considering human visual system characteristics. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm effectively increases the subjective image quality, not only in dark images but also in images including both bright and dark areas. Especially in a low lightness image, the proposed algorithm showed higher performance improvement than the conventional approaches.

  • DIBR (Depth Image Based Rendering) is a multimedia technology that generates the virtual multi-view images using a color image and a depth image, and it is used for creating glasses-less 3-dimensional display contents. This research describes the effect of depth accuracy about the objective quality of DIBR-based multi-view images. It first evaluated the minimum depth quantization bit that enables the minimum distortion so that people cannot recognize the quality degradation. It then presented the comparative analysis of non-uniform domain-division quantization versus regular linear quantization to find out how effectively express the accuracy of the depth information in same quantization levels according to scene properties.

  • In this paper, we found the many effective ways and apply for improve the 3D quality of Autostereoscopic 3D display products. Autostereoscopic products compared to traditional 3D glasses, the disadvantage is the poor depth of 3D picture quality and it only can see the fixed distance and position. So, for the compensate this disadvantage, we use the Head tracking technology and video placement algorithms and several techniques. In this paper, the will report on how to improve the Parallax Barrier Autostereoscopic 3D quality through the Head tracking of the user identification, video replacement algorithms and crosstalk improving method.

  • In this paper, we implement viewport dependent tile partitioning for high quality 360 video transmission and rendering method to present a HMD (Head Mounted Display) screen for 360 video quality evaluation. As a method for high-quality video transmission based on a user's viewport, this paper introduces MCTS (Motion Constrained Tile Sets) technique for solving the motion reference problem and EIS (Extraction Information Sets) SEI including pre-configured tile information, and extractor that extracts tiles. In addition, it explains tile extraction method based on user's viewport and implementation contents of the method of expressing on an HMD. Therefore, if 360 video is transferred by the proposed implementation which only transfers video from the user viewport area, it is possible to express higher quality video with lower bandwidth while avoiding unnecessary image transmission.

  • In photolithography process, resolution enhancement techniques such as optical proximity correction (OPC) and phase shift mask (PSM) have been applied to improve resolution. Especially, sub-resolution assist feature (SRAF) is one of the most important OPC to enhance image quality including depth of focus (DOF). However, imaging performance of the mask could be varied with the diffraction order amplitude changed by inserting SRAF. Therefore, in this study, we investigated the imaging properties and process margin of attenuated PSM with SRAF. Reflectivities of attenuated PSMs at 13.5 nm were 3, 6, 9% and simulation was performed by $PROLITH^{TM}$. As a result, aerial image properties and DOF as well as diffraction efficiency were improved by increasing the reflectivity of attenuated PSM. Additionally, printed critical dimension variations depending on SRAF width and space error were also reduced for attenuated PSM with high reflectivity. However, SRAF could be printed when reflectivity of attenuated PSM is high enough. In conclusion, optimization of reflectivity of attenuated PSM and SRAF to prevent side-lobe from being printed is needed to be considered.

  • PDP is the flat panel display, suitable for high definition television because of large-sire and high-brightness. It has many advantages such as fast response, wide viewing angle, low weight, and simple manufacturing process for fabrication. However, there are some disadvantages and one of them is the image quality degradation, which is dependent on the digital signal processing. Although image quality of PDP is improving by many researches and experimentations, it still isn't as good as that of CRT because of various factors. One of them is worm-like pattern generated by an error diffusion process. And the worm-like pattern is severely increased after an APL process. An increased worm-like pattern occur a drop of resolution in image and a change of CCT according to each grayscale. In this paper, a method for improvement of image quality using the error diffusion which considers the APL process is proposed. In the proposed method, the APL process is performed before the error diffusion process. Simulation results showed that the proposed method has better performances for resolution in images and CCT uniformity according to each grayscale than the conventional method.

  • This paper proposes a novel contrast enhancement (CE) algorithm for color images using the modified error diffusion (ED). After conventional color histogram equalization (HE), artifacts such as false contours are produced in the contrast enhanced image. The proposed CE algorithm using the modified ED consists of two parts: CE and ED. In the first part, a low-contrast input image is enhanced by the conventional HE method. In the second part, we use the modified ED algorithm. The inputs of the second part are the average and scaled difference images of the original color input image and the HE image, in which the scaled color difference image is diffused by the ED algorithm. In the proposed algorithm, the modified ED algorithm reduces the artifacts produced in the HE image, and increases the number of color levels. Computer simulations with a number of low-contrast color images show the effectiveness of the proposed CE method in terms of the visual quality as well as the probability mass function. It can be used as a post-processing for CE with simultaneous artifact reduction in various display devices.

  • In this paper. we Propose an UXGA class LCD controller for controlling the LCD panel. The proposed controller supports the full screen display using GCD between input and output resolutions. The proposed LCD controller includes the motion detector based on median filter which can detect the motion of input image for the enhancement of a image quality. Also, it divides the motion into 3 stages such as still, semi-moving and moving, and uses the different interpolation algorithms according to the degree of motion. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed interpolation algorithm, we use PSNR method and compare the conventional algorithm by using computer simulation. For the proposed motion detection algorithm, we use a visual verification and the estimation of pixel changes. The proposed LCD controller has been designed and verified by VHDL. It has been synthesized using Xilinx VirtexE FPGA.
