AMOLED 디스플레이 주요 기술 및 최근 동향 - 플렉서블 디스플레이 기술 위주로 - (AMOLED Display Technologies and Recent Trends - Focusing on Flexible Display Technology -)

  • 디스플레이는 브라운관을 시작으로 PDP(Plasma Display Panel), LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) 이후 AMOLED(Active Marix Organic Light Emitting Diode) 순으로 시장을 형성하고 있다. 유기발광다이오드 OLED는 4차 산업혁명을 준비하는 각 국가들의 발전을 위한 핵심 분야로 인정받고 있는 기술이며, 특히 국내 최고업계 삼성 디스플레이, LG디스플레이는 OLED의 90%이상의 점유율로 시장을 주도하고 있다. 현재 AMOLED는 접거나 휠 수 있는 영역으로 옮겨왔으며, 이와 같은 기술이 가능한 이유는 플렉서블 기판상에 TFT(Thin Film Transistor)와 OLED가 형성가능하기 때문이다. 향후 스트레처블 디스플레이로 그 기술은 이동할 것이며, 이를 위해서는 늘어나는 기판 소재 개발이 우선 진행되고, 다음으로 TFT, OLED 소자 역시 늘어날 수 있는 재료로 구현되어야 할 것이다.

  • We have developed a paper-like display using polymer particles charged triboelectrically. By using a toner-type display with a simple structure, we continued that polymer particle movement is controlled by only a voltage difference between scan and data electrode. We fabricated a diagonal 2.4 inch panel on the glass substrate and successfully produced an image by the passive driving method with operating voltages of about ${\pm}$ 120 V. The contrast ratio was 4:1.

  • We have studied transparent top gate Al-Zn-Sn-O (AZTO) TFTs with an $Al_2O_3$ protective layer (PL) on an active layer. We also fabricated a transparent 2.5 inch QCIF+AMOLED display panel using the AZTO TFT back-plane. The AZTO active layers were deposited by RF magnetron sputtering at room temperature and the PL was deposited by ALD with two different processes. The mobility and subthreshold slope were superior in the cases of the vacuum annealing and the oxygen plasma PL compared to the $O_2$ annealing and the water vapor PL, however, the bias stability was excellent for the TFTs of the $O_2$ annealing and the water vapor PL.

  • A high rate deposition sputtering process of magnesium oxide thin film in oxide mode has been developed using a 20 kW unipolar pulsed power supply. The powersupply was operated at a maximum constant voltage of 500 V and a constant current of 40 A. The pulse repetition rate and the duty were changed in the ranges of 10 ${\sim}$ 50 kHz and 10 ${\sim}$ 60 %, respectively. The deposition rate increased with increasing incident power to the target. Maximum incident power to the magnesium target was obtained by the control of frequency, duty and current. The deposition rate of a moving state was 9 nm m/min at the average power of 1.5 kW. This technique is proposed to apply high through-put sputtering system for plasma display panel.

  • A shielding effectiveness of mesh screen filter of plasma display panel (PDP) has been calculated in this paper. Since the screen filter is located near the radiation source, the near field wave impedance of the radiation source, i.e., the PDP electrodes, has been considered to calculate the shielding effectiveness. The near field shielding effectiveness of screen filter at 30${\sim}$300 MHz has been estimated to be more than 65${\sim}$80 dB. The measured shielding effectiveness of screen filter is 10${\sim}$50 dB at 30${\sim}$300 MHz[1]. The resulting discrepancy indicates that there are other EMI emission sources such as emission from PCB and cable besides the PDP electrodes.

대형 FPD TV 시장에서의 기술 경쟁: LCD와 PDP간 경쟁에 대한 시스템 다이나믹스 방법론의 응용

  • FPD(Flat Panel Display) 시장은 디지털 기술의 발전으로 급속하게 성장하고 있으며, 이는 TV 시장에서도 마찬가지이다. 많은 전문가들은 LCD(Liquid Crystal Display)와 PDP(Plasma Display Panel)의 기술적 차이로 인해 LCD는 소형 크기의 TV에 적합하고, PDP는 대형 TV에 적합할 것이라 예상하고, 이에 따라 FPD TV 시장에 적용되는 기술이 목표시장(target market)에 따라 양분할 것으로 전망하였다. 그러나 LCD 생산기술상의 예상치 못한 급속한 진전은 PDP가 목표로 하는 대화면 TV 시장에서 LCD가 독자적인 틈새시장을 형성하고 이를 점차 확대할 수 있도록 하였다. 이러한 시장 전개 양상은 LCD와 PDP의 경쟁을 심화시키고, 현재 앞에서 전망한 바와 같은 현상은 발견되지 않고 있으며, 오히려 대화면 TV 시장에서조차 LCD가 우위에 있음을 보여주는 사례가 많다. 본 연구에서는 LCD가 PDP와의 기술적 격차를 줄이고, 결과적으로 LCD와 PDP간 경계를 무너뜨린 보다 근원적인 원인을 분석한다. 특히 이러한 잠재적 메커니즘을 시스템 다이나믹스 방법론을 도입하여 분석한다. 특히 PDP에 대하여 점진적으로 LCD가 우위를 확보하게 되는 피드백 루프들을 밝혀 내고자 한다. 그리고 이러한 피드백 루프 중에서 가장 효과가 큰 메커니즘을 찾아낸다.

  • In this study has developed analysis system for automatic inspection of FPD(Flat Panel Display) characteristic, such as brightness, view angle, color ratio in the manufacturing process. Developed system consists of inspection-sensor part, acquiring a data by 3-CCD Color CCD camera and Inspection-stage part, driving a FPD holder to rotation and tilt direction. In experiment results, we could have ensured easily brightness distribution, available view angle, color reproduce and could expect to improve the quality, productivity, and yield.

Pseudo 480-Hz Driving Method for Digital Mode Grayscale Displays

  • A pseudo 480-Hz drive method has been proposed to reduce the dynamic false contour noise that occurs on flat panel displays with displaying grayscale image in the digital mode, such as plasma display panels. The proposed method makes the image movements nearly continuous by rearranging the 8-bit image data displayed for 1 TV field into 8 subfields. The position of the image data rearranged in subfields has been optimized on the basis of the speed of the moving image by computer simulations for the dynamic false contour noise. It is verified that a significant reduction in the dynamic false contour noise is achieved with the proposed method as compared to the conventional noise reduction technologies. Moreover, to reduce the noise in digital mode displays, the proposed technology requires only 8 subfields. Therefore, there is no reduction in the brightness of the image.

  • It is strongly expected that inkjet printing method will be play and important role on printable electronics such as 3D integration of embedded ceramic devices(capacitor, resistor, inductor and electrode or circuit), Si-TFT and organic TFT including display C/F, RFID, FPCB, and etc. A inkjet printing method had been center of attention to strengthen the competitiveness of flat panel display on market and to open the new world of manufacturing process of printable electronics. We will survey the industrial tendency of printable electronics and flat panel display including some examples of inkjet printing and present the considerable points of inkjet printing method and some role of materials for successful inkjet printing.

Characterization of PDP Performance Prepared by Vacuum In-line Sealing Technology

  • By using vacuum in-line driving and photoluminescence measuring system, we have examined the electrical and optical characteristics of plasma display panel produced by vacuum in-line sealing technology. In addition, the relationship between luminous efficiency and base vacuum level before filling discharge gas was analyzed. In the case of base vacuum level of $1.33{\times}10^{-1}$ Pa, the firing voltage of a 2-inch diagonal PDP panel was ranged from 312 to 343 V depending on the discharge gas pressure of $2.667{\times}10^4$ to $4{\times}10^4$ Pa at room temperature, Whereas in the case of $1.33{\times}10^{-4}$ Pa, the firing voltage was reduced by 40 V and luminescence was improved slightly.
